UK Coffee Week, a spectacular celebration of coffee, runs from 10-16 of October, and will see the UK coffee industry and its customers come together to celebrate all things coffee while raising funds for coffee-growing communities.

Hospitality businesses of all shapes and sizes fundraise by donating from every cup or bag of coffee sold, or by running events and activities in store.

A host of activities will be taking place across the country, including Latte Art Throwdowns, raffle competitions with great prizes, espresso martini parties, and more. Coffee enthusiasts can find out where the closest coffee shop is that will be taking part by visiting the UK Coffee Week map and What’s On page.

The UK Coffee Week bus will also be back for an interactive pop-up at Boxpark Shoreditch on the 13th and 14th of October. The bus will be serving up free plant powered coffee from Alpro and Caravan Coffee Roasters.

Since 2011, the UK Coffee Week community has raised over £800,000 for Project Waterfall, reaching over 45,000 people with clean drinking water, sanitation and education.

The funds raised during UK Coffee Week 2022 will go to Project Waterfall’s new initiative in the Berbere district of Ethiopia. 40,000 people will have access to clean water and sanitation when this three-year project is completed.

“UK Coffee Week is about celebrating the coffee industry as well as supporting coffee-growing communities. The campaign is an opportunity for us to all come together and make a real impact on the communities that grow our coffee by providing them with a sustainable source of clean drinking water and sanitation,” said Rebecca Hodgson, director of Project Waterfall and UK Coffee Week. “As Project Waterfall’s flagship fundraising campaign, UK Coffee Week gives every coffee shop the power to make a difference no matter their size, while engaging their team and having fun!”

More than 770 million people around the world do not have access to clean water. The majority live in isolated, rural areas – the same areas growing our coffee. Project Waterfall was established by Jeffrey Young in 2011 to unite the coffee industry and coffee consumers to give back to the communities growing our coffee, by investing in sustainable clean water, sanitation and hygiene projects.

Headline sponsor Alpro, and category sponsors Fulfil and Green Rock Manufacturing, are excited to support the campaign. Graham Kelly, head of coffee at Alpro, said, “As a long-standing supporter of UK Coffee Week, we are excited to be taking this a step further by becoming headline sponsor in 2022. Project Waterfall is an excellent initiative, and we are proud that we are playing a bigger role this year in driving even more donations.”

Stone Street Coffee, direct-to-consumer coffee company, announced a new partnership with charity: water today.

The team at Stone Street Coffee is thrilled to be able to partner up with a cause that is so close to their hearts. Water is such a key ingredient in coffee, from the farmers who drink it, to its use in agriculture, washing the beans in some coffee processes and of course it being the main ingredient in most coffee-drinkers’ morning ritual.

Cara Brobst, brand partnerships manager at charity: water, said, “At charity: water, we believe that when a community gains access to clean, safe drinking water, it changes everything. That’s why we’re really excited to partner with Stone Street Coffee to help bring clean water to people around the world!”

Stone Street is committing to give out 5% of all its online store sales over $50 to charity: water in an effort to fund water projects in developing countries, where most coffee is grown. They are working with Givz, which helps merchants create charity-focused donations via their websites. Andrew Forman, founder and CEO of Givz said: “We are proud to be partnering with an innovative brand in Stone Street Coffee that is simultaneously letting consumers know what they stand for while ultimately supporting what their customers care about most.”

100% of public donations collected by charity: water fund clean water initiatives and they prove every built project. They work alongside strong local partners to build and maintain projects. Every time a water project is complete, GPS coordinates, photos, and a brief description of the project on Google Maps is posted. It’s just one of the ways they’re changing charity—holding themselves accountable to the highest level of transparency.

Benjamin Elmalek, chief digital officer at Stone Street Coffee, said: “This is a big step for us as a company as it’s the first time we venture into this kind of partnership, and I’m personally super excited about this journey. It’s also a cause I care deeply about as it is rooted in my beliefs of water being accessible to all with no limitations. It’s a basic human right. We will be giving 5% of our website sales over $50 back to charity: water to fund multiple wells across the globe in developing countries starting today. Water and coffee make so much sense in terms of how they correlate with one another from the ground level of the farmers to the end users who brew it, which is why we decided to work with charity: water. We want to bring this sense of consciousness to our end consumer and raise awareness.”

For the holiday season, The Tea Spot has partnered with charity: water to create a limited-edition charity: water Tea Tumbler set that provides clean water – with every set sold – to someone in need.

The set includes a 32oz travel tumbler with infuser and double-walled insulation to keep tea fresh for hours (hot or cold). The special set also includes a 25+ serving package of “Peach on Earth” oolong tea for use with the bottle. 100% of the net proceeds from each sale will be donated to charity: water with a goal of raising a total of $100,000 to bring clean water to an estimated 2,500 people.

As a non-profit organisation, charity: water funds sustainable water projects in areas of greatest need and works with local partners to implement them. The Tea Spot is a leading producer of handcrafted whole leaf teas and Steepware, and the company donates 10% of all profits to community wellness programmes around the world through its 10% For Wellness programme.

Maria Uspenski, founder and CEO of The Tea Spot, said: “I’m honoured to have our company partner with charity: water, and so very excited to offer this Limited-edition The Tea Spot x charity: water Tea Tumbler Set as a force for wellness. It’s the perfect gift that gives back this holiday season, providing clean and safe water to one person in need in a developing country, while also infusing the goodness of whole leaf tea for the giftee.”

Scott Harrison, founder of charity: water, said, “The Tea Spot’s mission as a socially responsible business, as well as its 10% For Wellness programme, are very much in line with charity: water’s goal of helping communities. When a community gets access to clean water, it can change just about everything. It can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school. We’re excited about this partnership with The Tea Spot, and we look forward to further helping as many people as possible around the world.”

Since 2006, charity: water has funded 79,136 water projects around the world to help more than 13.2 million people get access to clean water, hygiene and improved sanitation. To date, all of The Tea Spot’s 10% For Wellness donations have gone directly to cancer and community wellness programmes, and The Tea Spot has contributed more than 10 million cups of tea to various organisations.

According to charity: water, 785 million people in the world live without clean water. That’s nearly one in ten people worldwide or twice the population of the United States. In parallel, The Tea Spot’s mission is to develop solutions for healthy hydration, so access to the gift of water is at their core.

To order The Tea Spot’s Limited-edition charity: water Tea Tumbler set, visit theteaspot.com/products/charity-water-tea-tumbler-set. Shipping is free to the lower 48 states in the US but note that the set is excluded from further discounts, as 100% of net proceeds are donated to charity: water’s clean water projects.

The set’s tumbler is lead-free, cadmium-free and BPA-free. The Tea Spot’s “Peach on Earth” tea is a traditional jade oolong that’s grown along winding mountain streams in Fujian Province, China. Its lightly oxidized, rolled leaves open to offer a soft fragrance with hints of lilac. This tea’s naturally sweet and aromatic character is perfectly accented by peach essence, and it’s delicious cold brewed or hot steeped.

Oceana Coffee has announced that $500 from this round of its Cup of Kindness is going to Meals on Wheels Palm Beach.

For the last three months, customers and loyal fans of Meals on Wheels Palm Beach have been voting at Oceana Coffee locations for their favourite local charity and buying bags of special charity blends online at Oceana Coffee retail stores. On Wednesday 6 October, the beans were tallied up and the winner was announced to a local crowd of supporters, as well as live on Oceana Coffee’s Facebook and Instagram channels. The weight of the coffee beans in the jars was very close, with Networking to Help Children, and Rise up Kids receiving votes in the form of coffee beans dropped in the jar and bags of coffee sold.

“Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches is a community funded non-profit so programmes like Oceana’s Cup of Kindness are critical to continue to meet our mission of serving hot nutritious meals and delivering wellness checks daily to the homebound senior population in Palm Beach County,” commented Maura Nelson.

Cup of Kindness started in 2018 and has become a favourite to locals. Through this local charity initiative, Oceana Coffee chooses three charities per quarter to highlight at their local retail stores and to their online customers. Oceana Coffee welcomes Swiift Inc., Speak up for Kids Palm Beach County, and Wheels for Kids for this next round of Cup of Kindness.

On Friday 14 May 2021, Dutch Bros Coffee will mark its 15th annual Drink One for Dane day. Dutch Bros will donate a portion of proceeds from all of its more than 400 shops to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the leading non-profit organisation in ALS research, care, advocacy, educational and professional programming.

Drink One for Dane began after Dutch Bros co-founder, Dane Boersma, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). While Dane passed away in 2009, his fight to end ALS continues through his family and the Dutch Bros’ annual giveback, Drink One for Dane. The Boersma family and Dutch Bros started Drink One for Dane as a way to increase awareness of the disease, raise support for those affected, and to support research to find treatments and cures for ALS.

“For the last 15 years, our customers have astounded us with their support for Drink One for Dane,” said Travis Boersma, co-founder of Dutch Bros. “This day is a testament to Dane’s spirit and positive attitude that lives on through Dutch Bros every day. We’re honored to partner with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and support its vital mission of finding a cause and cure for ALS.”

This year, Dutch Bros is hoping to raise $1.6 million, which would bring the grand total donated to MDA over the last 15 years to $10 million. In addition to raising money at the stand, customers can donate directly to the campaign at www.dutchbros.com. As a thank you, customers who swing by on 14 May can snag a limited edition Drink One for Dane sticker (while supplies last).

MDA is the world’s leader in funding research, care and advocacy in the search to cure muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases. Research continues into understanding the root cause of the disease and finding a cure.

“We consider our partners at Dutch Bros more like family, because they have felt the pain of losing a loved one to ALS and know the mission we are on as deeply as we do. Drink One for Dane has been one of the most successful ALS fundraisers year-on-year. We are excited to again join Dutch Bros for another successful event this year. The millions of dollars Dutch Bros has raised and continues to raise provides essential support for the patient care, education and continuing critical research around finding a cure and cause for ALS. We won’t stop until we cure this devastating disease. Together, with Dutch Bros, we are on the path to doing that,” said Donald S Wood, PhD, president and CEO of MDA.

Much of the money raised since 2007 has gone to support MDA’s ALS-designated multidisciplinary care centers for patients, as well as to fund research for a cure.

The Gentlemen Baristas has partnered with mental health charity The Burnt Chef Project for the release of its latest caffeinated product, Toque Hat Coffee. The coffee stalwarts, who have 10 outlets across the capital as well as their own roastery in Shadwell, are aiming to raise awareness of The Burnt Chef Project – a non-profit campaign committed to burning away the stigma and shame associated with mental health for hospitality professionals worldwide.

The limited-edition Toque Hat Coffee – available to buy now until 26 March 2021, is a Kenyan coffee best enjoyed as espresso or filter using a cafetiere to bring out its flavours which boast tasting notes of berry compote and dark chocolate, coupled with vibrant acidity. Like all Gentlemen Baristas coffee, the Toque beans are hand roasted at the Shadwell roastery guaranteeing maximum quality and taste. For every bag sold, 20% of all proceeds go to the charity raising awareness of mental health in the hospitality industry.

Henry Ayers, co-founder of Gentlemen Baristas comments: “’We pride ourselves on being family first and there for one another and that is why this project and the money we hope to raise is so important to us, not just as employers but as part of an amazing industry we love.

“Gentlemen Baristas was created not only to source, roast and sell the best coffee but also to always act responsibly. Collaborating with The Burnt Chef Project directly underlines our ethos and ambitions as a business; to serve great coffee as well as look after people who are most in need.”

Kris Hall, founder of The Burnt Chef Project comments: “Mental health is as important to hospitality as great coffee. It is the life blood that keeps us pushing on in the toughest of services. This coffee has been long awaited, and I am pleased to have partnered with such an iconic and much-loved brand within the coffee scene. A business that not only values every last member of their team but also their customers. The funds raised through sales of this coffee will allow us to aid the industry even more as we implement our new training app and Burnt Chef Support number during one of the most testing times in hospitality history.”

Toque Hat Coffee can be purchased from The Gentlemen Baristas’ online shop, and in London Bridge, Borough, Vinegar Yard, and East India branches, priced at 250g for £12 and 1kg for £38.

The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF) taps into the passion and creativity of the coffee industry for Brewing Funds the Cure – a lighthearted initiative designed to raise serious awareness and critical funds for pediatric cancer research. Kicking off this month (October), craft brewers from states around the nation will once again handcraft a signature philanthropic beer, Rising Hope, with 100% of proceeds benefiting NPCF.

New for the 2020 campaign, a signature Hope Roast coffee blend by Kahwa Coffee Roasters will also be available for caffeine-lovers, with 43% of net proceeds donated to NPCF – serving as a reminder that 43 children in the US are still diagnosed with cancer each day.

In 2019, the Rising Hope brew initiative had partners in 23 states and raised over $125,000. In 2020, the NPCF has partnered with breweries in more than 30 states nationwide and hopes to increase funds raised for life-saving research and treatments with the coffee community now on board. NPCF’s new collaboration with Kahwa Coffee Roasters – one of the largest independent coffee roasters in Florida – just released Hope Roast in September, expanding the Brewing Funds the Cure partnership programme to include coffeehouses, shops and online ordering.

Another opportunity for the coffee industry to get involved includes the Tap Handle Program, which allows coffeehouses to donate a percentage of sales per pour from the blend of their choice to NPCF for a week, month, etc. Additional ways to partner include adopting the NPCF’s sticker programme or by creating custom collateral to support the cause. Businesses in the coffee industry are invited to help support the NPCF find less toxic and more targeted treatments for kids – and ultimately one step closer to finding a cure. To learn more about collaborative partnerships with NPCF, visit: NationalPCF.org.

As additional partners join the philanthropic programme, all Brewing Funds the Cure partners will continually be updated on the virtual map at: brewingfundsthecure.org.

Rio 2016 Olympic Champions Owain Doull, Callum Skinner and Philip Hindes have added a single origin coffee to their two-product 5 Rings stable in aid of men’s mental health.

The British cyclists, who all secured gold medals at the Olympic Games in Brazil four years ago, have named the new product ‘Break the Chain’ in memory of Doull’s late friend who committed suicide in tragic circumstances in June. In a sign of 5 Rings’ purpose-driven ethos, 50% of the sales proceeds of Break the Chain – which joins fellow single origin coffee roasts Blind Faith and Cali Crash in coming to market – will be donated to mental health charity, Andy’s Man Club.

The new roast is so-named as a result of the founders’ efforts to break the chain of men’s battles with mental health, and to do so through a positive initiative that raises awareness of challenges such as depression and anxiety and encourages others in society to “do their bit” in helping others manage their wellbeing. Men’s mental health is a cause close to the founders’ hearts, too, as Skinner himself suffered from depression and anxiety following his Rio 2016 triumph, with Hindes and Doull playing an integral part on his road to recovery.

5 Rings founders Owain Doull, Callum Skinner and Philip Hindes said:“As a sport, competitive cycling attracts those that like to suffer, but it’s a suffering that’s consensual, encouraged and applauded. Break The Chain is about a different kind of suffering altogether, however, and one that has impacted the three of us, and large numbers of people across society, directly.

“Callum was directly impacted, as he suffered from depression and anxiety following the Rio Games, and we (Phil and Owain) played an active part in his recovery, watching him grow, recover and thrive. Unfortunately, with one of Owain’s closest friends this summer, there was no such recovery; and so, this has motivated us to play our part in breaking the chain of men’s mental ill health. We want everyone to know that by purchasing our new coffee roast, and sharing it with others, you can play your part, too. Coffee is a social activity and one small act of kindness can make a world of difference.

“Callum first became aware of Andy’s Man Club during a BBC Radio Five Live radio show. He immediately admired the simple concept that the charity embodies, getting men to chat wither they are struggling from mental ill health or not. For too long there has been a stigma about men talking about how they feel, Andy’s Man Club provides a safe and non-judgmental place for men to talk.”

The volunteer medical teams of non-profit Portland Street Medicine is reportedly solving this problem by regularly visiting and helping the community with food, emergency medical care, and essential supplies like toiletries, tampons, and even TriMet tickets. If clients need it, the charity will also connect them with emergency care and same-day services.

Local coffee businesses Catalyst Trade and Extracto Coffee Roasters have teamed up to raise money to benefit Portland Street Medicine. “We wanted to really contribute to a team that’s providing help on the ground level,” said Catalyst Trade CEO, Emily McIntyre.

Extracto and Catalyst Trade have been partners for years, and Extracto owner Chris Brady has traveled with the Catalyst team to Ethiopia several times. A majority Ethiopian-owned business, Catalyst Trade is an importing company intensely involved with the communities where its coffee is grown, as well as where it is consumed.

Extracto Coffee is an anchor of NE Portland, with owners Chris and Celeste Brady providing a cafe and wholesale experience that, even during Covid-19, is its own ‘unique community pocket’.

The two companies have started donating (as of 17 July) 100% of the proceeds from sales of their Ethiopian Washed Dimtu Guji coffee, which will be available through Extracto’s website (for free delivery throughout most of Portland’s Metro area). The companies estimate they may be able to raise around $11,000 for Portland Street Medicine.

“It was important to us that we donate a coffee that’s high quality and community-based,” said McIntyre. “We want to give our best to help Portland Street Medicine with its mission, and we hope that our fellow Portlanders and coffee professionals will support us to make it count.”

The coffee will cost $20 for a 12oz bag and can be ordered via: extractocoffee.com/shop/ethiopiagujidimtu.

The theme of this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week (15 – 19 June) is about ‘understanding loneliness one conversation at a time’, and UK charity Send a Cow is encouraging people to use this week as an excuse to catch up (virtually) over coffee (or tea) with friends, family, or someone who may be alone during lockdown.

Send a Cow says, in the spirit of Ubuntu, an African word that means ‘I am, because you are’: we are all connected, and loneliness can be overcome.

Send a Cow is encouraging people to hold their own African Coffee Break, and the charity even has a free playlist, coffee quiz and tasting notes available to add to the occasion.

Claire, a coffee grower in Rwanda, joined a Send a Cow project. She said: I chose to grow coffee because it is one of the good cash crops in this region. I get money from coffee and no longer struggle to pay for my health insurance… working with Send a Cow has made us popular and it’s very good when people pass by and see our produce, then they [want] to know how we do this, and ask for help and advice.”

The sustainable development charity are making sure that, despite the coronavirus outbreak, small-scale farmers get the support they need to end hunger and poverty – people participating in the African Coffee Break are encouraged to make a contribution towards the charity, to help Rwandan coffee farmers like Claire. £100 of donations can go towards helping 10 families with seeds, tools and training.

Rebecca Parford, head of Public Fundraising at Send a Cow, said: “When we launched the African Coffee Break we saw some brilliant events, and there’s nothing to stop people recreating the same vibrant events online, from the comfort of their own home. We’ve put together some tips to give people a great way to connect, wherever they’re based.”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of face-to-face events, the charity behind Loneliness Awareness Week (Marmalade Trust) is also hosting a virtual campaign called ‘One Less Lonely Voice’ with the aim of empowering everyone to understand loneliness one conversation at a time, so people can help themselves and others to manage feelings of loneliness.

Melitta USA has announced that it will be donating 100% of profits from the sale of its pour-over products from April through June on www.melitta.com to Go Fund Bean, a virtual tipping platform to help baristas facing lost wages and unemployment as a result of Covid-19. The organisation has officially been granted non-profit status as it rushes to support coffee shop workers facing store closures or reduction in income as result of locations shifting to to-go only models.

Melitta is the company founded by the inventor of pour-over coffee, Melitta Bentz. The company’s donation is a fitting gesture as baristas around the world serve coffee based on her invention every day, but due to shelter-in-place orders and other measures meant to counter the spread of Covid-19, many have been unable to do so.

“We’re incredibly grateful for Go Fund Bean and other organisations that are stepping in to provide assistance to an integral part of the coffee community that is experiencing significant impact from Covid-19,” said Chris Hillman, vice president of marketing, Melitta USA.

“It’s great to see the industry banding together to help those in need, and Melitta is proud to be a part of that effort.”

With the slogan, “coffee people helping coffee people,” Go Fund Bean was started as a crowdfunding platform and evolved into a virtual tip jar which allows people to add their favourite coffee shop to the online list and donate money to that specific location or any others already on the site. Since its formation, Go Fund Bean has quickly grown to include over 250 coffee shops, primarily located in the US.

“With many coffee shop workers facing immediate and significant financial troubles as a result of the pandemic, something had to be done and done fast,” said Adam JacksonBey, founder of Go Fund Bean.

“Go Fund Bean is a great way for people, and businesses such as Melitta, to help those less fortunate during this unprecedented time when they need it most.”

Nestlé AG has been working since beginning of the Covid-19 crisis to provide local relief efforts in the communities around the globe where the multinational company operates. Nestlé has offered support to charities, medical institutions and other organisations, and has worked closely with physicians to develop new tailored Covid-19 medical nutrition and supplement treatment protocols.

Nestlé also donated to food banks and food delivery organisations to support people in need as well as its business partners throughout its supply chains.

Ronnoco Beverage Solutions has announced the launch of Concentric Coffee, a sustainable Third Wave brand. Concentric Coffee will support education, clean water, and agronomy initiatives in origin countries through Mercon Coffee Group’s LIFT program, while contributing locally through Mission: St. Louis.

Third Wave coffee focuses on high quality beans and stems from consumers becoming more interested in the character of the coffee itself.

“Ronnoco strives to support those who sustain it in surrounding communities at a local and global scale,” said Chuck Sarosi, executive vice president of business development, Ronnoco Beverage Solutions. “Concentric Coffee draws on the rich heritage of Ronnoco’s St. Louis roots. This Third Wave-inspired brand supports our company’s values by assisting farmers in origin countries and our local communities.”

The new brand supports Ronnoco’s local partnership with Mission: St. Louis, a nonprofit organization with a goal of combating poverty in St. Louis, improving families’ surroundings and focusing on long-term employment. A portion of the proceeds from Concentric Coffee will go toward supporting the charity’s operations.

“Ronnoco and Mission: St. Louis have identified opportunities for internships and trainings to help clients develop the skills needed to secure meaningful full-time employment,” said Josh Wilson, president and executive director, Mission: St. Louis. “Serving Concentric Coffee in local businesses will serve the greater good for the community.”

Concentric Coffee’s products include:

  • Kinsman: A dark roast, Fair-Trade Organic coffee with a sweet peony aroma, toasted almond flavor and vanilla body. Smooth, with a clean, citrus finish.
  • LIFT: A light roast blend originating entirely from LIFT farms, with hints of brown sugar, spice, and cocoa-toned cherry pie.
  • Tandem: A medium roast blend from Ethiopia and Costa Rica with a rich aroma, a smooth body and clean aftertaste.
  • Organic Guatemala: A single-origin, medium roast offering flavorus of plush blackberry, sweet cinnamon spice and dark cocoa.
  • Espresso Gold: A dark roast created from a select blend of Arabica beans, with a smooth and intense flavour.
  • Decaf Private Estate: A proprietary blend of high altitude and high quality Arabica beans with a nutty flavour and medium to light body. The mountain water decaf process is 100% chemical-free and is used to remove the 99.9% of caffeine in this product.

“We started with the idea of connection as all concentric circles have a common center,” said Sarosi. “At its core, Concentric Coffee is all about creating connections to community and origin through the commonality of coffee.”

Concentric Coffee will further position the company for continued growth in key foodservice channels, including colleges and universities, healthcare and lodging.

Concentric Coffee will be available through Ronnoco’s foodservice channels.
