Leon is partnering with UK kombucha brand, Remedy, to offer its customers a healthier drink alternative. Remedy will launch into Leon chains nationwide this month, with Wild Berry and Ginger Lemon flavours in 250ml cans (RRP. £2.79) – the first and only no-sugar kombucha brand to be made available within the healthy fast-food chain.

Remedy recently announced that it has become the first – and only – kombucha to be available in all the UK’s ‘Big 5’ supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons). Meanwhile, other recent launches also include into fast food and coffee chains, Starbucks and Wasabi, signifying the growing demand for kombucha in the UK, with the category growing at 37% RSV (retail sales value) year on year.

The addition of Remedy into Leon provides a healthier soft drink option for Leon customers, with the kombucha being free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, and bursting with live cultures (good bacteria), organic acids and antioxidants that are widely reported to support gut health. This move supports findings highlighted in a recent Mintel report, which shows that almost half (42%) of food and drink buyers would step up their buying of healthy food and drink products as the cost-of-living crisis eases.

Ian Hadley, commercial director at Remedy Drinks UK, said: “We’re delighted to be launching into Leon as the chain reflects everything Remedy stands for – nutritious, healthy food, which is not only delicious, but which is also good for your gut! Being included in the Meal Deal highlights the growing support for kombucha in the UK and signifies how consumers are not only looking for healthier alternatives when it comes to grocery shopping, but when it comes to their fast-food choices, too.”

Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the negative connotations of ultra-processed foods, which frequently made the headlines in 2023. According to the Mintel report, 46% have noticed recent stories about UPFs in the press or on social media recently; with 64% thinking that highly processed foods are unhealthy – suggesting that the healthier, more natural offerings available through stores such as LEON, may see a rise in popularity as a result.

Remedy Kombucha is now available in a wide range of fruit flavours, including Raspberry Lemonade, Wild Berry, Cherry Plum, Mango Passion, Ginger Lemon, Peach and Orange Squeeze; most recently, Remedy also announced the launch of Remedy Energy – a healthier twist on energy drinks with the same caffeine hit as other big players in the market, but powered by all-natural ingredients including green coffee bean and ginseng, initially available in Berry Blast and Tropical Twist flavours from retailers including Sainsbury’s, Holland & Barrett, and WHSmith.

Remedy Kombucha’s Wild Berry, Ginger Lemon and Raspberry Lemonade flavours are now available in selected Waitrose stores nationwide in the UK and online at Waitrose.com (4 x 330ml; RRP. £5.50) – the first no-sugar multipack kombucha to be made available within the premium supermarket.

Following recent successful launches into major outlets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Starbucks, WHSmith, BP Garages, Wasabi and Fullers Pubs, this new listing signifies the growing demand for kombucha in the UK, with the category growing at 33.3% RSV (retail sales value) year on year and Remedy taking the lead above any other kombucha brand with 77% growth

The addition of Remedy provides a healthier soft drink option for Waitrose supermarket shoppers, with the kombucha being free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, and also containing live cultures (good bacteria), organic acids and antioxidants that are widely reported to support gut health.

Remedy is the kombucha market leader in the UK, selling £3.6m+ comparatively to last year, with a can or bottle sold every three seconds in UK grocery and multipacks now growing at more than 77% year-on-year due

Recent research from Remedy showed that 37% of Brits are addicted to sugar, with a further 8% ‘completely’ addicted. Retailers are responding to the growing desire for customers to improve their overall health and sugar consumption and are opting for healthier food and drink alternatives to offer customers. Remedy’s kombucha is low in calories, with just nine calories in a 330ml can.

Ian Hadley, commercial director at Remedy Drinks UK, said, “In January, we saw the biggest ever lift in sales across the kombucha category, with this continued growth bringing about even greater demand for Remedy.

“We’re delighted that Remedy has become the first no-sugar kombucha to launch into Waitrose in multipack format and are grateful for the ongoing support from all our retail partners. This support is helping us to realise Remedy’s ambition of shaking up fizzy drinks for good, putting something good out into the world!”

Tesco recently released stats on how sales of kombucha have increased by 65% in the past two years. Kombucha has enjoyed such a boost in popularity that Tesco recently added Remedy to its Meal Deal. Tesco shared that, since lockdown, there has been a general uplift in shoppers looking for functional food and drink, which supported the decision to make kombucha more widely available to its customers. This has, in turn, helped boost their sales.

As a result of Remedy’s success, growth and the strength of the brand and product within the UK market, Remedy is also embarking on a programme of marketing initiatives for 2024 and beyond, with activity including a forthcoming sponsorship of The Doctor’s Kitchen podcast and sampling at events including Food & Drink Expo and the Taste of London Food Festival. Further launches and retail expansion will also be announced over the coming weeks.

South London, UK -based, MOMO Kombucha, has launched its collaborative Hops Kombucha (RRP £4.50 per 330ml glass bottle; 6 pack: £26.50; 12 pack: £45.00) with South London neighbours, Orbit Beers, soon to be available from MOMO, Orbit and Selfridges from Friday 8 December.

A limited edition that will launch in time for festive celebrations and Dry January, the collaboration is back for the third year. MOMO X Orbit Beers Hops Kombucha is made with Hallertau Blanc and Nelson Sauvin hops that provide tropical fruit and gooseberry flavours, rounded out with a tart kombucha. Hops have a complex flavour base, mapping citrus tones and herbal, earthy notes, which make them a match for fully fermented tart kombucha like MOMO’s. A non-alcoholic option that beer drinkers can get truly excited about, says the company.

Co-founder of MOMO Kombucha, Josh Puddle, commented, “We could think of no better partner than Orbit Beers, we’ve admired their traditional method of making European beer with a modern twist down the road in South East London for many years. This traditional approach with a flavour focused modern spin felt like a natural fit for the way we brew. This is our third limited edition special, and we are so grateful to have partnered with Orbit. Their beers can regularly be found in our brewery fridge (for when a kombucha can’t quite cut it) and Orbit supply some of our favourite pubs and restaurants in London. Thanks also to our head brewer, Matt Canham, for the creation of this delicious kombucha – it could be our best yet.”

Robert Middleton, founder of Orbit Beers added, “We’ve admired MOMO’s traditional method of brewing kombucha down the road in South London for many years and love working with and sharing recipes and ideas with their team. Our first collaborative batch was brewed in January 2021. It was so well received, winning a Great Taste Award, that we decided to brew it for the third time, in time for Dry January 2024. One of the main reasons we fell in love with kombucha (apart from the delicious taste) is the benefits for our gut microbiome.”

For every bottle sold, MOMO will contribute 10p to Save the Children’s Gaza appeal, supporting children affected by the crisis in the region.

Kombucha brand, Remedy, has announced the launch of its new drink, Remedy Energy. Touted as providing the drinker energy without the crash or jitters that come from traditional sugar-laden artificial energy drinks.

Initially available in two flavours, Berry Blast and Tropical Twist, Remedy Energy offers fruity flavours and energy, without any of the sugar or artificial additions. Featuring all-natural ingredients, including green coffee bean and ginseng, each gluten-free and vegan-friendly drink contains 80mg of caffeine, which is the same caffeine hit as a typical cup of coffee.

The launch comes at a time when research illustrates that the UK sports and energy drinks market size increased by over 22% in 2022[1]. However, around a third of UK consumers who don’t drink energy drinks say that there should be a wider range of natural variants available – suggesting an opportunity for energy drinks made with all-natural ingredients[2].

Launched in Australia in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Sarah and Emmet Condon, Remedy Kombucha has grown rapidly to be sold in a multitude of major UK grocery and high street retailers, as well as within boutique independent retailers and bars. Remedy is leading the growth of the kombucha category, expanding at nearly 70% year-on-year; it is also the clear market leader with >33% category share. A Remedy drink is sold every 2.5 seconds in the UK, with its delicious range of bold fruit flavours driving high repeat and loyalty levels.

Sold in the UK every 2.5 seconds in the UK, Remedy kombucha is crafted using Remedy’s 30-day brewing process. Meanwhile, Remedy Energy has the same caffeine levels of the big energy players in the market, but with natural ingredients. Plus, all the benefits of Remedy’s kombucha brew: live cultures, antioxidants and organic acids, with no sugar.

Ian Hadley, UK commercial director of Remedy Drinks, said, “Remedy’s incredible growth within the UK demonstrates a clear consumer appetite for healthier soft drinks. This, coupled with the rapid and sustained growth of the UK’s energy drinks market, has created an exciting opportunity for a natural, healthier energy drink alternative which our customers can feel good about drinking.

“The energy drink category is currently dominated by a range of drinks featuring excessive sugar and artificial ingredients. With three quarters of the population looking to reduce or avoid sugar in their diet[3], the demand for a variant like Remedy Energy has never been stronger.”

Both Energy flavours offer a smooth and enjoyable drinking experience with a sparkling, refreshing taste, packed with feel-good energy. Tropical Twist is made with fragrant notes of ripe mango and pineapple, while Berry Blast contains notes of juicy berries, ripe from the sun, providing a bold, fruity taste paired with clean caffeine from plant-powered ingredients for an all-round energy boost.

MOMO Kombucha, the New Covent Garden Market -based brewery, is launching its Watermelon Kombucha, in collaboration with Natoora, available from MOMO, Natoora, Planet Organic and Whole Foods (RRP £4.50 per 330ml glass bottle) from 25 July.

MOMO’s unfiltered kombucha is blended with Sentinel Watermelon, resulting in a fruity flavour balanced by the tones of Kombucha. The Sentinel Watermelon is grown by Oscar Zerbinati, in Mantua, Northern Italy, an area renowned for its melon growing; the Zerbinati family is one of the most celebrated growers in the region. The watermelons are grown slowly, reaching up to 18kg, Oscar grows one melon per plant to ensure the plant puts all its energy into the one fruit; he carefully restricts their water intake, forcing them to cling to the nutrients in the mineral rich clay soils, resulting in dense, rich flesh.

The new addition to MOMO’s portfolio is the lightest, most refreshing kombucha the company says it has ever made, and really highlights both the quality of the produce and kombucha as a medium. Zerbinati’s Watermelon makes the kombucha ideal for summer occasions, such as picnics, BBQ’s or hot London tube journeys.

Founder of MOMO Kombucha, Josh Puddle said of the collaboration, “We are so grateful to have partnered with Natoora and to have been able to combine Zerbinati’s expertly grown watermelons with our kombucha. I wasn’t sure the flavour would cut through the kombucha, but it really does and has totally surpassed our expectations – all credit to our head brewer Matt Canham. We’re also happy to be supporting Natoora’s Farm Fund through this partnership, a fantastic organisation supporting young farmers committed to agroecological methods.”

MOMO Kombucha is on a mission to produce the best tasting and highest quality kombucha, which they achieve by using finest ingredients, including a blend of the finest teas and slow pressed juice; brewing in glass jars, in super small batches, and leaving the liquid completely unfiltered to offer the maximum health impact.

Find MOMO X Natoora Watermelon Kombucha at Planet Organic, Whole Foods, Natoora and via the MOMO website.

Remedy Kombucha is making its debut in Sainsbury’s supermarkets across the UK this June, launching with a new flavour, Orange Squeeze, as well as its popular Wild Berry.

The new flavour has been created to deliver bold citrus notes and, like the rest of their range, it is light, fizzy and refreshing. Remedy Kombucha Orange Squeeze is a healthier alternative to traditional sugary or artificially sweetened orange soft drinks. Remedy’s kombucha contains live cultures and organic acids to support gut health, and it is also free from sugar and contains only natural ingredients.

Remedy Orange Squeeze is made using Remedy’s 30-day, small-batch brewing process, which creates strong live cultures and complex flavour notes, says the company. This long-age ferment also removes all sugar, creating a shelf-stable, 100% plant-powered kombucha.

Launched in Australia in 2012 by husband-and-wife, Sarah and Emmet Condon, Remedy Kombucha has grown rapidly to become the UK’s most popular kombucha brand, sold in UK retailers such as Tesco, Ocado, Morrisons, Holland & Barrett, Starbucks, M&S, WHSmith, Amazon – and now Sainsbury’s.

Anna Dominey, UK general manager of Remedy Drinks, commented, “We’re delighted to be launching in Sainsbury’s with Orange Squeeze, our exciting new flavour. In partnering with Sainsbury’s, we’re looking forward to continuing to expand Remedy’s audience and surprising customers with just how delicious our sugar-free, all-natural kombucha is!”

Launching into Sainsbury’s with multipacks of 4 x 330ml cans (RRP: £5.50), Remedy Kombucha Orange Squeeze will also roll out within Holland & Barrett from July, in individual 250ml cans (from £1.99). The new flavour is also available now online at Remedydrinks.co.uk. Sainsbury’s will also stock multipacks of 4 x 330ml cans of Remedy Wild Berry Kombucha.

Touted as the ultimate functional beverage, kombucha is a well known, strong performer in the US market with a rabid fan base, while in the UK and Europe, kombucha is still working to establish itself, but its popularity is growing. By Kathryn Brand

Depending who and where you ask, kombucha ranges from a niche beverage that people have heard of but do not know what it is, to a beverage and lifestyle staple. However, there is no argument that, globally, it is a growing category, situated in the ready-to-drink (RTD) tea market, which is also growing. This growth is driven by four macro trends, according to London-based Momo Kombucha’s co-founder, Josh Puddle, which are “gut health, low sugar, alcohol alternatives and vegetarianism/veganism.”

Consisting of fermented tea, using a live culture of bacteria, known as a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast), fruit flavours are often then added to create a naturally low-sugar, lightly sparkling probiotic drink, sometimes with a naturally occurring ABV of around 0.5 per cent, however many manufacturers remove this alcohol content to bypass possible restrictions.

Thought to originate in China, one of the largest markets for kombucha is currently the United States. A 2015 Mintel report found that nearly one quarter of US consumers were drinking kombucha, half of which were aged 25-34. However, the market has grown significantly since then so the figures are now likely higher — and it is still growing. Future Market Insights Kombucha Market Outlook report forecasts kombucha to globally experience a CAGR of 17.4 percent from 2022 to 2033, or a rise from USD $3.4 billion to $17.1 billion.

The US is one of the most developed kombucha markets, and therefore is experiencing innovation in the category, such as Caffe Luxxe’s coffee kombucha, brewed from the company’s own coffee as a base rather than tea, to “provide the energising effects of coffee in combination with the probiotic benefit of kombucha,” said Gary Chau, co-founder of south California-based Caffe Luxxe. Kombucha is highly popular among Californians, which Chau credits to the regional trend of lifestyle wellness and holistic health.

California was also the host state of Kombucha Kon, which saw its third annual installment in April. This conference and expo is targeted specifically at the kombucha industry, offering networking across the kombucha supply chain. “Medium-large and better-distributed US brands were represented, including Brew Dr., Bambucha, Flying Embers and Local Roots,” commented Jason Walker, marketing director of Firsd Tea North America, who attended the conference.

Where the US market is reaching maturity, in Europe, in particular the UK, whilst showing strength, the category is still establishing itself and growing its popularity base, with companies mostly trying to make themselves known and educate consumers on what kombucha is and the health benefits it offers, since this is what draws most consumers to the products, and then draws them back. One company already has an advantage in this respect; Yorkshire Tea, a household name in the UK for everyday black tea, is launching a line of kombucha in collaboration with kombucha brand, HOLOS Kombucha, brewed from its own tea. It is still in its trial phase and not yet available to consumers, however, attendees  at the London Coffee Festival, which took place in April, were able to sample the new line. Several other kombucha companies also exhibited at the annual event.

Millennials drive category growth

Kombucha is heralded as the ultimate functional beverage, serving as a probiotic, which contains live microorganisms intended to contribute to healthy levels of good bacteria in the gut, supporting digestion and boosting immunity. Kombucha companies are tapping into the wellness trend that strengthened during the Covid-19 pandemic, and offering a healthy, alcohol-free beverage that also tastes good.

Momo’s Puddle said that the main consumer demographic of its kombucha are millennials, primarily 25 to 45 year olds, which concurs with Fact.MR’s report detailing millennial’s rising adoption of bottled tea. However Caffe Luxxe’s Chau shared that its kombucha is sold generally to those “interested in an overall health and wellness lifestyle.”

That statement is supported by Anna Dominey, UK general manager at Remedy Drinks, an Australia-based kombucha company that dominates in its origin country as well as in the UK market, who says that it appeals to “those who are rejecting processed foods and drinks in favour of more natural alternatives and by those who are looking to cut down on alcohol or drink more mindfully.”

It is evident that the main driver of the kombucha category is its health benefits as well as the offering of an alcohol alternative. “Around 20 per cent of Remedy is consumed in the evening, suggesting consumers are enjoying it as a tasty and satisfying alternative to alcohol,” commented Dominey, further indicating the growing partnership between the low and no alcohol trend, and the functional/wellness beverage trend.

Beverage companies are tapping into this demand, according to Puddle, “more brands are creating products specifically for this segment, eg, kombucha in champagne-style and beer-style bottles.” An example of this is Mighty Brew, which, alongside its core range which retails at a price point of approximately £5.66 (USD $7.08) for 750ml, it offers a more premium ‘Heritage’ format at approximately £11.00 ($13.76) for 750ml which is housed in a champagne-style bottle, complete with cork and cage. Mighty Brew’s Heritage range is marketing itself as an alternative to alcoholic bubbly beverages at celebratory occasions.

Tapping into current trends

This functional/wellness and low and no category overlaps significantly with those incentivised by sustainability claims, therefore, most kombucha brands cite accolades accordingly, such as Momo achieving certified organic and B Corp status. Further, Remedy endeavours to source high quality, all natural ingredients; “This was the way Sarah and Emmet [Remedy’s founders] did it when they started on the kitchen counter, and they still take an active role in sourcing the best ingredients from trusted suppliers,” revealed Dominey. “We know where every single ingredient in our drinks comes from, right down to even our live culture,” she continued. Similarly, Caffe Luxxe builds sustainable relationships with its coffee farmer partners to provide consistent and fair prices.

Looking ahead, Future Market Insights (FMI) Kombucha Market Outlook report finds that it is “unlikely that consumer demand for fermented goods may decline anytime soon,” with the millennial generation’s focus on healthy eating fuelling the demand. However, to increase its consumer base, the kombucha market needs to actively promote its health benefits to attract the older consumer, as well as work on becoming more cost-effective, as it currently sits in the more premium category in most markets. FMI’s report also details that the category can take advantage of novel flavours to attract consumers and tap into the increasingly adventurous flavour palates of the consumer.

Remedy Kombucha, the UK’s leading kombucha brand, has launched its Wild Berry and Mango Passion flavours (250ml cans) into Fuller’s pubs across London and the UK. Crafted from all-natural ingredients, and free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, Remedy Kombucha offers a healthier alcohol alternative to Fuller’s customers.

Launched in Australia in 2012 by Sarah and Emmet Condon and aimed at consumers seeking a healthy beverage without compromising on taste, Remedy is the UK kombucha category leader, accounting for 72% total category growth and with a 30% market share. And Remedy’s presence within the UK continues to grow rapidly, with recent launches into Starbucks and bp. Remedy’s kombucha is also growing beyond grocery and retail into the on-trade, with partners such as Wetherspoons.

This growth is driven, in part, by an increased awareness of personal health and wellness, with consumers turning to their diet to provide more functional health benefits and considering health properties when purchasing food and drink. With shoppers attaching such high importance to maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle, the challenge is on suppliers and retailers to make it easy for them to do so, and this launch offers Fullers customers a healthier soft drink or alcohol-alternative.

Anna Dominey, general manager at Remedy Drinks UK added: “It’s fantastic that Remedy Kombucha is now available in Fuller’s pubs, providing a delicious alternative for customers seeking a healthier, alcohol-free option. Our strong presence in grocery, and ongoing expansion in the on-trade, demonstrates further that Remedy delivers on flavour and can be enjoyed on any occasion, whether in your own home or at your local pub.”

All Remedy drinks are made using an innovative technique involving a 30-day brewing process to accentuate the flavour and strength of living cultures, organic acids and antioxidants that are widely reported to support gut health. Remedy Kombucha is also vegan, gluten-free, fructose-free, paleo friendly and HALAL certified.

Remedy Kombucha has become the first kombucha to launch into bp, with its Wild Berry and Raspberry Lemonade flavours (250ml; RRP. £1.99) available in bp-owned convenience stores across the country now.

Vegan and gluten-free, the inclusion of Remedy delivers a healthier soft drink alternative for people on-the-move, with Remedy’s light and refreshing fizzy drinks free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, and also bursting with live cultures (good bacteria), organic acids and antioxidants that are widely reported to support gut health.

Remedy is the kombucha market leader in the UK, with >30% category share, and the third largest kombucha brand globally. Growing at more than 70% year-on-year, Remedy has driven more growth in the category than all other competitors put together over the past 12 months.

Research demonstrates that this is mostly thanks to Remedy’s delicious fizzy drinks, which offer the enticing sweet and sour notes of a traditional fermented kombucha, balanced by bold fruit flavours. In recent years, kombucha has become increasingly popular worldwide. Despite it being initially brewed nearly two thousand years ago in China, it spread throughout Europe and the United States only in the 20th century. Nowadays, kombucha can be found in most health shops, supermarkets, and local cafés, and its availability continues to grow.

This low-calorie drink consists of tea, sugar, yeast, and bacteria; kombucha is in itself, a colony of yeast and bacteria, which when mixed with the other ingredients and left to ferment, results in a fizzy beverage. The process is not a complex one and consists of:

  • Purchasing a brewing vessel (glass or ceramic), organic tea, sugar and water.
  • Adding SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) after the tea is brewed and cooled and covering it with a thin towel.
  • Setting aside the mixture for up to two weeks in a warm, ventilated location.

Once the fermentation process is completed, the resulting beverage can be consumed as is, or it can be put through a second fermentation phase, where it is transferred into sealed containers with flavourings (like fruit or juice) and left to sit for up to one more week.

Some people drink it for pleasure, while others rely on its probiotic properties, including:

  • promoting a healthy immune system
  • stabilising the digestive tract
  • improving gut health
  • decreasing inflammation
  • potentially aiding in weight loss efforts.

As a result of the presence of lactobacilli in kombucha, further research finds that it could assist with bloating and even irritable bowel syndrome. Other kombucha studies evaluated its effects on increasing HDL cholesterol, which helps diabetics control blood sugar levels and serotonin, which in consequence helps with mental health.

Kombucha – The Perfect Alternative to Sugary Drinks

Kombucha contains a considerable concentration of antioxidants and probiotics, as well as reduced sugar levels, making it a healthier option in comparison with popular drinks like soda. And given its rising popularity, the great news is that you can find it in your local specialty store or even get kombucha on tap to drink at home.

Sugar-sweetened soft drinks consumption, especially in large amounts and over an extended period, can significantly influence a person’s metabolism and cause blood sugar to spike. The carbonation in any drink makes it more addictive and increasingly difficult to kick the habit, but not impossible. Removing sugary soda and other unhealthy beverages from your system can be done by replacing with kombucha.

Classic soda is packed with synthetic acids and chemicals that have harmful ramifications on overall physical and mental health. The sugar content – about 27 grams per cup – is linked to obesity and other adverse effects. Kombucha is an excellent alternative for when you want to keep your added sugar intake low, as the sugar in this healthy beverage – only 6 grams per cup – is only used to fuel the fermentation process and does not negatively impact your long-term well-being. Soda has no nutritional value, and if consumed in excess, it can store calories within the body and lead to weight gain and other related conditions. Different adverse results include digestive and sleep troubles, anxiety, and dehydration.

Kombucha is the go-to solution when trying to eliminate unhealthy habits like drinking soda on a regular basis and replace them with a delicious, nutrient-packed beverage that can significantly improve your life when incorporated into your daily routine.

  • Deanne and Jared Gustafson are the owners of Kombucha On Tap, a Southern California full-service distributor of top-quality and delicious products, including kegged kombucha, tea, sparkling water, and more. Coming from different professional backgrounds, both founders had limited experience in the industry, but they realized this market’s immense potential and focused on spreading wellness. The healthy beverage distribution company was established in 2014 and has become the go-to supplier of kombucha on tap to restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and even homes and events throughout San Diego, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties.

UK supermarket brand Tesco continues to focus on kombucha as a high-growth category by listing kombucha cans from Remedy in its ‘Meal Deal’ in more than 220 stores nationwide.

Remedy’s  Raspberry Lemonade and Wild Berry Kombucha flavours will be added to Tesco’s Meal Deal offer from late May, in response to increased customer demand for healthier food and drink options. This move comes in advance of HFSS regulations targeting products high in fat, sugar or salt, with Remedy’s formulation being both sugar-free and light and refreshing, making kombucha accessible to a mainstream shopper.

The UK kombucha grocery market, worth £14.3 million and growing at 28% year-on-year, is one of the most exciting categories in soft drinks. Remedy is the fastest growing major brand in this category, growing at over 60% year on year and accounting for 64% of total category growth over the past six months1. Remedy’s range of sparkling, live-cultured drinks are all naturally free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, and use a traditional, long-aged brewing process.

Recent research carried out by Remedy demonstrates that 76% of grocery shoppers are looking to reduce or avoid sugar in their diet, making Remedy Kombucha compelling as a simple swap. The latest flavour from Remedy, Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry, which launched exclusively into Tesco earlier this year, will be included within the Meal Deal together with Remedy Kombucha Raspberry Lemonade (both in 250ml can format). Other flavours sold within Tesco include Remedy Kombucha Ginger Lemon and Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion, both available in a multipack (4 x 330ml cans).

Anna Dominey, UK general manager at Remedy Drinks UK, said: “Consumers are actively seeking out great-tasting drinks and easy swaps to reduce their sugar intake, and our research demonstrates that they expect retailers to do their part to support them in making healthier choices. We’re thrilled to see Tesco responding to this by providing Remedy – a drink which is clearly appealing to their customers – with increased prominence and visibility in store.

“By including Remedy in their meal deal, Tesco is offering shoppers a natural alternative to high sugar or artificially sweetened drinks – with no compromise thanks to Remedy’s light and refreshing taste.”

As well as this move into front-of-store, Tesco recently increased its distribution of Remedy multipacks in the soft drinks aisle by >190%. This is not the only recent success story for Remedy, a brand created on a kitchen counter by founders Emmet and Sarah Condon as they sought to create a healthier drink option for their family: Remedy has also seen its distribution and range increased within Morrisons, Ocado and Holland & Barrett. Morrisons is adding Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion (700ml bottle) to its existing Remedy range; while Holland & Barrett will also extend its 700ml bottle range to include SEVEN flavour variants (both retailers also stock Remedy variants in wider can format). Additionally, Ocado is adding two further Remedy multipack variants in Wild Berry and Mango Passion flavours.

Anna added: “Remedy is driving growth in the kombucha category by increasing the healthy drinks options available for consumers without compromising on taste. We are grateful to our retail partners for their support in making kombucha more accessible to all.”

Kombucha brand Health-Ade has announced a classic new flavour to its offerings in the US in the form of Berry Lemonade Health-Ade Kombucha.

Continuing its push for tasty and fun beverage reverie, Health-Ade has created a new summer-inspired brew that is flavoured with organic, cold-pressed blueberries and raspberries and infused with ice cold lemonade to offer a thirst-quenching kombucha. Health-Ade hopes its Berry Lemonade inspires nostalgia that harkens back to long summer days and ‘all the things that make the season so special’: rocket pops, roadside stands, and fresh-picked berries.

“Nothing says summer quite like lemonade which is why we are excited to add Berry Lemonade to our delicious offerings,” says Daina Trout, co-founder and chief mission officer of Health-Ade.

“Lemonade is consistently a flavour that our consumers ask us to create. When we make the decision to add something new to our product assortment, we want to make sure we will not only create a delicious new kombucha that Health-Ade fans have come to expect but that we can also look to reach new audiences that might not know what kombucha is or think it is not for them. With a tasty and familiar flavour such as Berry Lemonade, we know that both current and new fans will be delighted.”

Health-Ade’s Berry Lemonade Kombucha enjoyed a sneak peek at Expo West, the world’s largest natural foods show, where it was sampled to thousands and instantly became a fan favourite, according to the brand. Consumer sampling of the new flavour will be kicking off with the return of the US Coachella music festival and continuing through the summer months at cultural events and festivals across the country.

The return to consumer sampling events is part of Health-Ade’s dedication to raise awareness about the importance of gut health to a broad audience. The gut does a whole lot more than digest; it also plays a huge role in managing stress, immunity, skin, energy, mood and feelings. Consumers are certainly interested in gut health as the search term has seen a 600% increase in search volume in recent years (Google Trends, 2016-2021). By adding new and approachable flavours to the Health-Ade offering and showing up at cultural happenings, the brand says it hopes to make probiotic foods and gut health education accessible to more people.

Health-Ade recently introduced Pineapple Creamsicle as part of its seasonal SKUs and now Berry Lemonade will be part of its permanent flavour offerings. The new flavour will be available in March nationwide in retailers such as Whole Foods Market, Target and Kroger and available on its ecommerce platform.

Remedy, a UK kombucha brand, has announced the UK launch of a brand new flavour to add to its collection. Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry has arrived just in time to celebrate the fizzy stuff on World Kombucha Day today (21 February 2022).

Trying Remedy’s latest flavour, will remind you of a warm summer’s day, says the company, with flavours of strawberry, blackberry and blueberry.

Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry will initially be stocked exclusively at Tesco in a multipack (4 x 330ml) can format (RRP. £5). The retail giant will also be launching Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion at the same time, and more than doubling distribution of its existing Remedy flavours (Raspberry Lemonade and Ginger Lemon). This move underpins Tesco’s commitment to increase its sale of healthier products, with Remedy’s craft-brewed, no sugar proposition proving a hit with Tesco shoppers.

The kombucha market has expanded rapidly, with the drink enjoyed by customers who are seeking a healthier soft drink alternative. Like all of the drinks across the brand, Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry contains no sugar, naturally, earning it an official tick of recommendation from I Quit Sugar. It’s made in small batches following a long-aged 30-day brewing process to create tasty and healthy kombucha, says the company, with live cultures, organic acids and antioxidants.

Remedy Drinks co-founder Emmet Condon said, “Our newest Remedy Kombucha flavour is bursting with the mixed berry bliss we all know and love. While we’re all about encouraging healthier choices, that shouldn’t mean that we have to compromise on flavour or fun.

“Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry is the gateway drink for non-kombucha drinkers. It’s one everyone can enjoy guilt-free, with its deliciously jammy berry taste.”

Emmet added, “Berry drinks are well-known to be laden with sugar and artificial colourings. We wanted to make it right and create something full of flavour, not sugar, reclaiming some of the most celebrated fruit.”

Along with this exciting new listing, Remedy has also recently expanded into Ocado, as well as through outlets such as delivery service Gorillas; while it also remains the leading kombucha brand in markets including Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry is available exclusively at Tesco and online at Tesco.com. To find your nearest stockist and to view the full Remedy range, visit Remedydrinks.com.

KÖE Kombucha – the fruit-forward, organic kombucha in a convenient can – has announced significant expansion to its national distribution footprint. As mainstream consumers call for function like gut health and immunity, low sugar, exceptional taste, and competitive price points in their beverages, KÖE’s availability is extending beyond the natural channel and into more sets with mass appeal. Under new partnership deals, KÖE is available through best-in-class natural, broadline, and DSD distributors, infiltrating convenience, drug, and grocery retailers across the US.

Notable new retail placements include: select 7-Eleven locations (3,000), United Markets, Safeway Mid-Atlantic, Bristol Farms, Natural Grocers, Foodland, Super 1 Foods, RI Jordan Oil Company, Pioneer Petroleum, Royal Farms Convenience Stores, Henderson Oil Company, Clipper Petroleum, B-Kwik, and Re-Fuel. New DSD partners include: Honickman Beverage Group, Admiral Beverage, expanded UNFI coverage, Breakthru Beverage Group (FL), Northeast Sales, Canteen, Lipman Brothers, A.B. Beverage Company, Southwest Distributing, and Grey Eagle.

“KÖE’s positioning and offering is unique – surprisingly delicious, accessible flavors with all of the health benefits of traditional kombucha, but none of the unpleasant vinegar aftertaste. Now a strong base of consumers is catching on. And the best part is they’re not the typical kombucha drinkers – and they’re shopping across a variety of store formats,” said Louisa Lawless, chief strategy officer at Stratus Group’s KÖE Kombucha. “We’re bringing a totally new audience to this category. KÖE is gaining the attention of major beverage distributors as we consistently grow our sales momentum and velocities across channels.”

KÖE has taken an omni-channel approach, experiencing considerable growth in both ecomm and brick-and-mortar sales. According to IRI in the period ending 7.11.21, the US Kombucha Category declined -2%, while KÖE grew an impressive +72%. By channel, KÖE grew +87% in Grocery and +69% in Convenience. In the past four weeks, KÖE also posted +350% gains in Drug. KÖE is also the 2nd largest contributor to overall Kombucha growth in the Drug channel.

In the DTC space, KÖE continues to experience strong sales of 12-packs on Amazon and increased purchases from Instacart, Shipt, and retailer-owned grocery pickup and delivery programs.

Consumer demand has also led to the launch of KÖE’s two new flavours – Watermelon and Tropical – hitting store shelves this month. All of KÖE’s authentically fermented, lightly sparkling flavors are packed with billions of premium, live, probiotics. KÖE is USDA Organic, non-GMO Project Verified, and contains just 35 calories and 8 grams sugar per serving. KÖE’s convenient cans are shelf-stable for 12 months.

UK brand teapigs has received 15 Great Taste Awards this year. This brings teapigs’ total to an impressive 152 prizes to date.

All of teapigs’ teas are certified plastic free and are carefully selected and slurped by Louise Cheadle, teapigs’ co-founder and chief tea taster who has over 20 years of professional tea tasting experience.

“We’re really excited about these awards,” says Louise, “and we’re looking forward to bringing even more quality teas to the range. We do our best to source the best quality and best tasting tea out there and it’s brilliant to get feedback like this. Since day one we’ve been on a mission to get people drinking real tea again so it’s fantastic to be recognized for the work we’ve done so far. So, if you’re looking for a core classic flavour for your tea menu or something unusual to attract your customers, we’ve got an award winning tea that fits the bill!”

The stars were awarded for teas and blends across the teapigs range. Core flavours like peppermint, mao feng green tea and rooibos all received awards as did some of teapigs trademark quirkier flavours such as fennel & liquorice and chocolate & mint.

With a rise in consumer demand for functional drinks, teapigs feel good range was well decorated with their calm, happy and snooze blends all receiving a sought-after star.

Perhaps the most stand out awards went to relatively new additions to the teapigs range with two cold brew flavours, lychee & rose and peach & mango, as well as the newly launched peach and mango kombucha all getting an award.

“We know people are trying to keep their water intake up but want to avoid flavoured sugary drinks, so we’re thrilled our cold brews have been recognised by the Guild of Fine Food. Our cold brews are an easy way to make water tastier and more interesting – you just drop a tea temple in your water bottle or glass of water and leave it for as long as you like!” said Louise.

“Likewise, it’s amazing to see the positive feedback on our kombucha range. Being in the tea world, kombucha is everywhere, and we couldn’t help but think there’s always been one thing missing from the hype – the tea! Rather than using syrups, juices of flavourings, we’ve got an award winning range of teas and fruit infusions so why not use those real brewed teas to make a delicious drink? We figured better tea, equals better booch.”

Using quality teas undoubtedly hit home with the judges who described the peach and mango kombucha as having “lots of stone fruit on the nose, yet still retains a tea-like quality. The flavour is good: not too sweet, well balanced, and above all tasty. A very impressive kombucha!”

Remedy, the UK kombucha brand, has announced the launch of its newest flavour: Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion.

Initially available in 330ml glass bottles (RRP. £2.99 each or £24.99 for 12), Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion is silky-smooth and sweet, with a hint of passionfruit to up the tang. Like all Remedy drinks, it has no sugar and delivers delicious tropical notes of coconut and pineapple that are perfect to sip and savour in the summer sunshine, according to the brand.

Remedy is an authentic kombucha, made the old-school way: handcrafted in small batches, following a long-aged brewing process and using only the best quality, all-natural ingredients. Even the culture (good bacteria) that is added to every single Remedy drink is a descendent from the very first batch of Remedy made on founders Sarah and Emmet Condon’s kitchen counter – so the Remedy team know exactly where every single ingredient in their drinks comes from. As a result of this traditional production process, Remedy believes its Kombucha is the tastiest kombucha around; bursting with live cultures, organic acids and antioxidants, while also being delicious.

Anna Dominey, Remedy’s UK general manager, said: “We have seen Remedy’s sales grow by more than 300%this last year, as consumers seek out healthier soft drink alternatives and then realise the incredible quality and depth of flavour available to them through our range of Remedy Kombucha, Switchel and Coconut Water Kefir. Premium kombucha drinks brand Health-Ade, has announced the launch of a multimillion-dollar marketing and education campaign, a brand refresh, and initiation of clinical research trials intended to offer consumers greater insights about what is arguably the single most important aspect of health according to science: the gut (Asnicar, 2021).

Despite the gap in knowledge, consumers are beginning to realise there’s something critical happening in their digestive systems. The term ‘gut health’ has seen a 494% spike in search volume from consumers nationally (Trends, 2016-2021), indicating a dramatic increase in interest in the topic. In recent months, multiple studies have been released connecting gut health to immunity, mood, and whole-body wellness (Psychiatry, 2020), yet most people report feeling uncomfortable talking about it and connect the gut solely to digestion. Health-Ade hopes to change all of that with an approachable campaign that starts with the gut’s point of view, leveraging the “Gut Gaze” to draw viewers in and take them on a journey of how a healthy gut leads to whole body wellness and how probiotics and healthy acids, like those in kombucha, can help. The omni-channel campaign will include digital video for streaming devices, social media content, display ads, and a 360-influencer campaign all geared towards educating and disseminating gut health information in an easy to understand, entertaining format.

“Health-Ade has come a long way from our days selling kombucha in the Los Angeles farmer’s market,” said CEO and co-founder, Daina Trout, who also holds masters’ degrees in Nutritional Biochemistry and Public Health, “but we have so far to go to inspire learning about personal health, especially as it relates to the gut. Your gut does so much more than digest, it has an insanely important impact on all aspects of your daily life – like driving immunity, energy, metabolism, mood, and even skin health. Scientists know this, but most people and even healthcare practitioners don’t.”

Revamped brand identity

Health-Ade tapped New York based SISTER STUDIO, led by co-founder and creative director, Lana Shahmoradian, to revamp the brand identity and create a brand campaign informed by Health-Ade’s bubbly personality. The campaign goal: demystifying gut health for a universal audience that goes beyond kombucha die-hards. The campaign was brought to life through a diverse mix of talent, both on and off camera, mirroring the brand’s endeavor to make the benefits of gut health relevant to all. Both Health-Ade and SISTER STUDIO are female founded and run.

“We saw an opportunity to illuminate the meaning behind the brand’s tagline ‘Follow Your Gut!’ and talk about gut health in a way that resonates with a broader, more diverse audience. The brand refresh and campaign expand the conversation about gut health by unpacking the gut’s influential role in our everyday lives (your cognition, mood, energy, etc.) in a way that aligns to the brand’s bubbly ‘happy gut’ personality,” said Ms Shahmoradian.

Health-Ade’s campaign, which will launch with national digital ads hitting over 50 million households, opens on a note of curiosity: it asks what is “The Gut” and why should you care about your own? It then segues into research-backed education about gut health and its effect on mood, immunity, energy, and skin, and how probiotics, prebiotics and healthy acids play important roles. An updated website further brings this story to life, creating a Health-Ade universe in which consumers can dive, gut first, into a world of digestible gut health education. The overhauled website will feature an interactive Gut Health 101 portal where consumers can learn more about their microbiome, kombucha, the difference between probiotics and prebiotics, and the gut’s impact on whole body health.

On the shelf, consumers will experience a revamped brand design across the Health-Ade Kombucha and Health-Ade Plus product lines that evokes the brand’s bubbly and bold personality. From the subtle modification of the logo and updated cast of character illustrations, to the new product descriptors that illuminate kombucha’s gut health benefits, the revamp will bring exciting new life to the functional beverage category, says the brand. The refreshed brand visual DNA and voice builds on the Health-Ade’s consumer equity and goal to become a recognised wellness company and leader in gut health, beyond kombucha.

Clinical trials will research the link between kombucha and gut health

Investing further in the belief that consumers should have access to easy-to-understand research-backed information about the power of gut health, Health-Ade has launched clinical human research trials that will study Health-Ade Kombucha’s effect on immunity, energy, metabolism, blood sugar and satiety. The studies are managed by a nationally recognised, independent research organisation and began in May with exploratory results expected to be ready by late summer 2021. Health-Ade expects the study to confirm what kombucha drinkers and fans of fermented foods already know: that kombucha has a significant and beneficial impact on gut health and whole-body health.

Lastly, 2021 marks another new milestone for Health-Ade. The brand will launch an updated version of its prebiotic soda line, Health-Ade Pop (formally known as Health-Ade Booch Pop) in June at major national retailers, including Whole Foods, CVS, and Walgreens. The better-for-you soda will feature updated packaging and new flavors in addition to its original offerings, for a total of six mouth-watering options: Pomegranate Berry, Lemon Lime, Ginger Fizz, Strawberry Vanilla, Apple Snap, and Juicy Grape. Health-Ade Pop will be available nationwide in stores and available for order online through Health-Ade’s website, with same-day or next-day delivery in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.

The UK Kombucha market is set to grow by 33% this year according to Nielson, and teapigs is celebrating this fact with the announcement that it will be the first recognised tea brand to make kombucha, with its very own range launching for general order (from 17 May). There will be three kombucha flavours available: original, ginger + lemongrass and peach + mango.

Each flavour is brewed in small batches in the UK with a live SCOBY, along with top quality teapigs tea sourced by trained tea taster & co founder, Louise Cheadle. teapigs Kombucha is 100% natural, featuring no artificial flavours or sweeteners. Additionally, 5p per can sale is donated to the teapigs ethical scheme which supports vulnerable young people in Rwanda (where teapigs sources much of its tea).

We figured better tea, equals better booch,” says Louise Cheadle.

“It’s going to be a summer of picnics and BBQs so these handy cans are the perfect drink to take to the park or enjoy at home. Kombucha is also massively popular with those looking for healthier soft drinks or beverages that can be drunk as a grown up alcohol free alternative – there’s only so much squash you can drink, right? Kombucha really ticks all the boxes for those drinks occasions throughout the day making it a must stock item.”

Available at www.teapigs.co.uk and for general wholesale order, the teapigs kombucha has an RRP of £1.90 per can (250ml), with a 12 month shelf life. The product is available in 6 & 12 cans per case.
