illycaffè, a global leader in sustainable, high-quality coffee, celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of its most revolutionary innovations: the paper coffee pod, the original single-serve coffee portion system.

In 1974, the Trieste-based company introduced the first pre-dosed and compressed single-serving coffee pod- a pioneering invention that, in the 1990s, became the industry standard (E.S.E. – Easy Serving Espresso). This marked a true revolution: with the perfect amount of coffee packed between two layers of filter paper and precisely pressurized, anyone could make an espresso as good as one served in a bar, right at home.

Half a century later, illycaffè continues its legacy of innovation with the ILLY X2.2 E.S.E., a new professional coffee machine designed by renowned architect and industrial designer Luca Trazzi. With its sleek, vintage inspired design, the new illy machine is crafted for bars, restaurants, and hotels that cater to clients seeking top-quality coffee and a responsible, sustainable experience. The launch responds to recent market trends, with 70% of consumers now preferring sustainable products, and coffee pods becoming an increasingly popular purchased by more than 3.2 million Italian households in 2023, a 10% increase from the previous year.

“We are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the E.S.E. pod system, a technology that, for half a
century, has embodied our dedication to innovation, quality, and sustainability – values that have always
been integral to illy,” said Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè. “This commitment is also reflected in our new professional coffee machine, which combines sophisticated design with sustainable technology to ensure excellent coffee while respecting our planet.”

The new ILLY X2.2 E.S.E. professional machine ensures exceptional in-cup quality with just a few simple steps. The illy E.S.E. pods, certified compostable, can be disposed of with organic waste, and are available in Classico (double espresso and lungo), Intenso, and Decaffeinato variants.

Costa Coffee partners with pod recycling service for UK trial scheme https://www.teaandcoffee.net/news/34949/costa-coffee-partners-with-pod-recycling-service-for-uk-trial-scheme/ https://www.teaandcoffee.net/news/34949/costa-coffee-partners-with-pod-recycling-service-for-uk-trial-scheme/#respond Wed, 04 Sep 2024 11:35:14 +0000 https://www.teaandcoffee.net/?post_type=news&p=34949 During the trial, customers can pick up free Podback recycling bags in-store and return them once full for Podback to collect and recycle.

UK coffee chain, Costa Coffee, has announced a new trial collaboration with Podback, a UK-wide coffee pod recycling service, to offer coffee pod recycling in 142 Costa Coffee stores across the UK. During the trial, customers can pick up free Podback recycling bags in-store and return them once full for Podback to collect and recycle.

Customers will be able to pick up free Podback bags from baristas in all 133 Costa Coffee stores located within Tesco stores across the UK, and nine Costa Coffee stores in the Swindon area, then take back their full bags for recycling. In addition, Podback-branded recycling points have been installed in the participating Tesco stores to make it even easier to spot opportunities to recycle pods. The scheme accepts both plastic and aluminium pods from any Podback member brands, including Costa Coffee pods for Nespresso, Tassimo and NESCAFE Dolce Gusto machines. The list of locations that the drop-off points will be installed are also now on Podback’s website here.

The rollout of the new recycling points began in August, building on Costa Coffee’s existing in-house pod recycling scheme. Together, Podback and Costa Coffee will aim to collect more pods for recycling through specialist facilities, where the different materials they are made from can be separated to enable them to be recycled.

This trial marks the latest step in Costa Coffee’s efforts to provide recycling options for packaging items that can’t easily be recycled at home or kerbside. Back in 2018, the brand worked with Valpak, an environmental solutions and resource management company, to establish the UK’s National Cup Recycling Scheme, which helped fund cup recycling infrastructure across the country. The scheme, now supported by many of the UK’s other major coffee brands, highlights the importance of collaboration in advancing new recycling solutions. Now, Costa Coffee will become the first UK coffee chain to collaborate with Podback to introduce customer-facing pod recycling points.

Rick Hindley, executive director of Podback, said: “This trial gives Podback customers the opportunity to drop off their used pods at local Costa Coffee stores, a response to customer feedback telling us people want a choice of ways to recycle that fit with their daily lives. We are excited to be working with Costa Coffee and Tesco to make this a reality in more than 140 locations across the country. We are sure Podback customers will welcome the new service, and hope that it is the first step to rolling out more drop-off locations throughout the UK.”

Liz Higgins, head of sustainability at Costa Coffee, said: “We are always looking for new ways to make it easier for our customers to recycle our packaging. Through this trial with Podback, in-store drop-off points will offer coffee pod users the chance to conveniently recycle their pods with us – whether they are Costa branded or not. The new front-of-house recycling units will be supported by increased messaging in store, which we hope will act as a reminder to customers when visiting our participating stores. The trial will allow us to gather valuable customer feedback and insights, which we will use to enhance our future recycling solutions for pods, cups, and other packaging materials.”

Catherine David, director behaviour change and business programmes WRAP, said: “The trial with Costa Coffee is a fantastic way to normalise and simplify recycling coffee pods. Due to their multiple component materials, these pods must be sent to a specialist recycling facility. Now, customers can easily drop them off in any participating Costa Coffee store. Making recycling simple is key to success, and capturing trickier items like pods at scale is an important step forward.”

Through the Podback scheme, used aluminium and plastic pods are recycled in the UK. Aluminium pods are recycled in Cheshire and used in the manufacture of beverage cans and car components. Plastic pods are recycled in Yorkshire and used in the manufacture of a range of items, including packaging crates and building products. The used coffee grounds are processed by anaerobic digestion facilities, producing renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver.

The locations of all drop off points will also be added to the Recycle Now Recycling Locator (managed by WRAP) – the UK’s only postcode-based search tool for people to find out what they can recycle at home, or at nearby locations.

The Los Angeles, US-based single-serve coffee brand, Bruvi, has partnered with Southern California roaster, Klatch Coffee, for its latest premium pods.

Klatch Coffee is a family-owned micro-roaster that has been producing coffee for over thirty years, roasting to its “Peak of Flavour” standards. Its Crazy Goat Blend is now part of Bruvi’s coffee offering.

Klatch is the latest partner in Bruvi’s Brand Partner’s Program, which aims to bring America’s best specialty coffee brands to a single-serve brewing platform for the very first time. Previous partners include LAMILL Coffee, Joyride, and Equator Coffee.

Specialty coffee brands are partnering with Bruvi because it offers technology and extraction not previously available on a single-serve platform, plus innovative degradable pods – making it suitable for craft brands and roasters like Klatch.

Klatch has partnered with Steeped Coffee and Cometeer in the past, but this is the first time it is offering its coffee in a single-serve brewer capsule format.

About Klatch Crazy Goat Blend

A robust medium-dark roasted blend with flavour notes of dark chocolate, toffee, and hints of spice in aroma and cup, from origins Central America, South America and Indonesia. It is the blend of choice for cold brew in Klatch Coffee cafes, and the Crazy Goat Blend B-Pods are available at US$24 for a box of 20 pods exclusively on Bruvi.com.

Nespresso UK has announced a partnership with Royal Mail to improve coffee capsule recycling for households across the country.

Nespresso customers now have two new options for recycling their coffee capsules with Royal Mail. They can arrange a free doorstep collection from their local postie using Royal Mail’s returns service. Alternatively, they can drop them off at any of the 14,000+ Royal Mail drop-off locations, including Royal Mail Customer Service Points and Post Offices.

Research commissioned by Nespresso to mark Recycle Week demonstrates just how important it is for recycling to be simple and convenient: despite 91% of Brits claiming they often recycle, many said they find recycling confusing (42%), and difficult (32%)*.

This partnership will increase nationwide access to easy and effective recycling methods for Nespresso capsules. Just over half of Royal Mails’ routes are wholly or partly on foot which helps to keep emissions low when compared to other carriers**.

Anna Lundstrom, CEO, Nespresso UK & ROI said, “Nespresso’s official partnership with Royal Mail brings recycling to the heart of the community, no matter where you live in the UK. Royal Mail is not only an iconic British institution, it also is recognised as having the lowest emissions per parcel** as their ‘feet on the street’ posties walk up to a billion steps a day. Recycling needs to be convenient, simple, and sustainable – and our partnership with Royal Mail is central to achieving that vision.”

Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail said, “We’re really pleased to be working with Nespresso to support their coffee capsule recycling. Everyone knows when their postie delivers so it’s really convenient to arrange for them to collect at the same time. If customers aren’t going to be in, Royal Mail can also collect from a safe place. To make it even more convenient, if customers don’t have a printer our posties can print and bring the label to the doorstep.

“And if Nespresso customers don’t want to arrange a collection, they can drop their capsules off at one of our 14,000+ Royal Mail locations. This is part of our commitment to continuously make our services more convenient as we re-invent the way we deliver to and collect from our customers.”

A pioneer of coffee capsule recycling, Nespresso also co-founded not-for-profit coffee pod recycling service, Podback. Nespresso UK customers can still use this service and can still drop their used capsules at any Nespresso Boutique.

Nespresso’s capsules are made with 80% recycled aluminium which is infinitely recyclable. Recycled aluminium is turned into new products such as beverage cans and car components. Used coffee grounds are also used to create soil improver, used on cereal farms in East Yorkshire, and renewable energy to power UK homes.

* Research was carried out by One Poll between 4th and 6th October 2023 with 2,000 adult respondents.
** When measured in terms of the CO2e emissions per parcel reported by the UK parcel delivery companies who currently publicly report these.

British artisan coffee roaster, Dualit, is introducing a new range of flavoured aluminium coffee pods into its beverage range. These environmentally friendly pods feature a mix of flavours, including Vanilla Cream and Rich Hazelnut, and are compatible with Nespresso machines. Launched at the end of July 2023, the pods are now available to customers.

With a major shift in the UK market towards premium and speciality coffees in recent years, and the forecast for 2023 set to be even bigger, Dualit has catered for the growing trend within this category by introducing the first of its flavoured coffee pods. With Vanilla and Hazelnut sitting in the Top 5 most popular coffee flavours in the UK, they will lead the way for the British coffee roaster as they enter the flavoured coffee market.

Made with high quality beans and flavourings, the blends are selected by Dualit’s Master Roaster at its West Sussex roastery. These premium coffee pods are designed to retain their fresh coffee taste, and each box contains ten capsules with a seal lid to lock in freshness. The challenge following customer feedback was to ensure that the syrup to coffee ratio retained the coffee flavour, and didn’t overpower with sweetness. The pods deliver this, according to the company, with the optimum balance of coffee and flavouring.

“Our flavoured coffee pods combine a smooth, medium strength Americano with the perfect dose of flavoured syrup, and when paired with milk, they create an elevated frothy cappuccino or milky latte experience to awaken the senses,” said Debbie McIvor-Main, marketing manager at Dualit.

About the two blends

Vanilla Cream – Strength 7: A medium strength Vanilla Cream with base notes of cereal, treacle, and dried fruit, topped with a hint of vanilla.

Rich Hazelnut – Strength 7: A medium strength Rich Hazelnut with base notes of cereal, treacle, and dried fruit, enhanced by a nutty flavour.

Dualit has sustainability and integrity at the forefront of all its coffee development and works closely with Fairtrade coffee producers. In addition, the use of aluminium to create the pods means a much lower environmental impact compared to other materials often used in coffee capsules, as it requires much less energy and resources to recycle. Aluminium pods are a great option for consumers who enjoy a pod coffee but want to make a conscious effort to protect the environment, and still maintain long shelf life.

To recycle, coffee grounds can be disposed of in food waste or compost bins, while the pod and lid can be recycled. Dualit’s handheld EcoPress Pod Recycler separates coffee from used aluminium pods, to support the recycling experience. Dualit’s EcoPress range is compatible with the new Flavoured Aluminium coffee pods, as well as the rest of the Aluminium range and other Nespresso® compatible pods.

The pods are available from dualit.com and Amazon, with an RRP of GBP £3.99 for 10x pods of £14.99 for 50x pods.

Beanies Flavour Coffee, known for over 40 flavours of instant coffee, is moving into the world of single-use pods.

The County Durham-based manufacturer is launching a range of Nespresso-compatible pods with in vanilla, caramel and hazelnut variants. Made with 100% arabica coffee, the pods are also fully home compostable.

Mark Stangroom, Beanies’ sales and marketing director, said: “After already having considerable success with our flavoured instant coffees, which culminated in receiving a Queen’s Award For International Trade last year, we saw an opportunity for coffee pods with ‘full-on-flavour’ both in the UK market and abroad. “We’ve started with three classics, but, with over 40 flavours in instant, there’s plenty of room to expand the range further.”

Beanies was launched in 2013 to offer coffee lovers a choice of easy-to-make flavoured instant coffees, which are stocked by major retailers and independent retailers in the UK. The brand also sells in more than 35 countries and last year won the prestigious Queen’s Award for International Trade.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the new pods are fully compostable at home.

Mark said: “We are working towards reducing our carbon and environmental impact with every new product launch, so it was important to us that the new coffee pods offered a sustainable option for those who prefer the convenience of single-use.

“Standard plastic and aluminium pods take hundreds of years to break down. Our pods are TUV-Austria OK Compost Home certified and will decompose within 26 weeks in the right conditions, which is even quicker than garden grass cuttings.”

The pods will be available in the UK and for export, along with Beanies’ existing range of instant coffees.

UK-based Artisan Coffee Co has announced that it is now partnering with Podback, the nationwide coffee pod recycling service.

Podback is a first of its kind recycling programme, bringing together all brands of coffee pods to create one easy recycling service. Artisan Coffee Co customers can now add free Podback bags to their orders of coffee pods. Once received they can put their used coffee pods in the bags and have them recycled either by dropping them off at Collect+ delivered by Yodel sites or through kerbside collection, where, in certain local authorities, pods will be collected with their usual household recycling.*

Podback ensures that both the used coffee and pod are reused as much as possible. Whether it’s recycled pods that can be used to create drinks cans, car parts, or furniture. Or the coffee inside them, which is repurposed and used to create renewable energy and compost.

Artisan Coffee Co is proud to source coffee beans ethically and sustainably, prioritising fair trade, organic coffee wherever possible, and believes we each have a role to play in looking after our environment. This new partnership is the next step in its pro-planet mission, and means consumers can enjoy coffee ethically and sustainably.

Announced back last April 2021, NatureWorks and IMA Coffee’s joint strategic partnership accelerates on the first significant trial phase on K-Cup compatible compostable coffee pods.

Compatibility testing on capsules, filter, and top lid films are being performed at IMA Coffee Lab with the precise aim to identify and achieve optimum material sealing parameters and limits as well as a suitable set up of IMA packaging machineries to handle the pods successfully.

Tests are carried out under the supervision of IMA Coffee R&D team and in close and constant co-operation with NatureWorks specialists: dedicated tools are used to simulate filter and top lid films sealing phases and adjust parameters according to testing results.

The sophisticated microleakage detection testing performed at IMA Coffee Lab has given more than encouraging and optimistic results allowing a significant step forward in the process that will proceed thoroughly towards the following coffee extraction testing phase, say the companies.

At NatureWorks, development of new single-stage thermoforming processes and capsule designs continues to produce precise capsules that meet IMA’s specifications for filling and sealing on their packaging machines.

NatureWorks has also constructed a custom Data Acquisition System for K-Cup compatible pods that is being used to understand and benchmark how differing capsule designs perform under various brewing conditions.

“With the promising results we’ve seen so far, we have already begun the next phase of development by partnering with converters in North America to bring these new compostable pod designs to commercial scale making them available to brands and roasters seeking to meet consumer demands for more sustainable packaging and to circular economy directives that specify compostable packaging as a key enabler of recovering food waste for compost,” said Flavio Di Marcotullio, global industry manager, Single Serve Beverages for NatureWorks.

Coffee capsules are complex structures where the capsule body, lidding, and filter must be precisely designed to deliver a consistently high-quality brewing experience. Before the capsules reach consumers, it’s critical that these components perform well during assembly and filling as well as on the shelf and during brewing. By bringing together NatureWorks’ materials and applications knowledge with IMA’s machinery expertise, the partnership aims to deliver a turn-key compostable coffee pod solution to the entire coffee industry making it simple to have a great cup of coffee and dispose of the used pod in the most sustainable way possible.

With this in mind, to give greater impetus to the topic and direct the production chain towards increasing environmental sustainability, in 2019 IMA launched IMA Zero and one of its pillars, IMA NoP – No Plastic Program. “NOP (No-Plastic Program) means we promote eco-friendly plastic substitutes for the packages manufactured on IMA machines. Through the research and testing of alternative processes and materials, together with customers, material suppliers and partners, we foster plastic-free and sustainable, compostable packaging solutions. IMA has also established the Open Lab where Material Technologists study, develop, and test compostable and recyclable materials to be used on our packaging equipment,” says Nicola Panzani, IMA Coffee sales manager and IMA Coffee Petroncini CEO.

NatureWorks and IMA will share more about the latest innovations in single-serve compostable coffee capsules as well as developments from the partnership at AMI’s Single-Serve Capsules Global Virtual Summit from 29-31 March 2022.

The post IMA and Caffè Borbone combine quality, sustainability and efficiency in latest project appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
A now historic collaboration between two companies: Caffè Borbone, a pioneering Neapolitan espresso brand, and IMA, leader in the design and production of packaging machinery, started in 2009, when Massimo Renda, executive president of Caffè Borbone chose IMA as the supplier of a dedicated integrated machine for the production of coffee pods complete with outer envelope and packed in cartons.

The two companies share the same corporate strategy and values, as they’ve always championed product diversification, and focused on environmental friendliness and social and economic sustainability. Both are also extremely innovation-oriented, drawing on their solid experience in the field of research and development.

Since 2021 IMA has followed and supported the Borbone project based on the conversion of CA3 machines, to ensure the best sealing of the pod wrapping material, perfecting the sealing technology with the aim of putting on the market a product that is completely recyclable after its separate collection as paper.

On this subject, Massimo Renda says: “The 100% Amici della Natura compostable pod is the tangible expression of our commitment to searching for increasingly “green” and environmentally friendly solutions.- which we feel is our duty towards present and future generations. We started going down that road a long time ago. Not surprisingly, we were the first to put compostable pods on the market, and today we are industry pioneers thanks to our fully disposable wrapping suitable for waste paper collection. Thanks to our approach, which has always been innovative and forward-looking, we will continue to work to improve the consumer experience, focusing on ever higher quality standards and even more sustainable solutions.”

“Synergy is key for me,” continues Renda. “I have always looked for reliable partners who shared my own values. Quality and sustainability are among the founding principles of Caffè Borbone, supplemented by an advantageous use of technology, capable of enhancing and above all preserving the sensory characteristics of our product. For this reason, IMA immediately stood out as the ideal partner.”

The partnership between the companies was indeed successful from the word go – based as it is on close collaboration, guided by a shared spirit of growth, which paid off by resulting in a long-term project based on sustainable principles and efficiency, and above all, aimed at preserving the quality of products. In the coffee industry, a good packaging system allows the product to be preserved from contact with oxygen, which causes the oxidation of the molecules that give coffee its taste and aroma. CA3 by IMA is a compact, fast and integrated machine capable of packaging both soft and compact pods, in a modified and conditioned atmosphere, which can be maintained thanks to the constantly controlled feeding of nitrogen in a protected environment, inside of which humidity and temperature are unchanged to ensure the highest product quality.

IMA Coffee offers a wide range of solutions, in terms of both production capacity and type of capsule and material to be used, thus contributing to the complete renewal of the range of machines for compatible products. The goal with Caffè Borbone was to increase production volumes, confirming Caffè Borbone’s expectations from capsule technology, i.e. better preservation of the taste of its Neapolitan espresso. This can be achieved by sealing the aroma of freshly ground coffee in the packs. An important goal, which has since become one of the core values of the Neapolitan brand, it says.

US-based Cambio Roasters has launched its new gourmet 100% Arabica coffee in fully recyclable coffee pods/K-cups. 33.5 million US homes have a Keurig brewer, and many consumers would reportedly love their brewer more if their K-cup were Earth-friendly. Cambio Roasters’ coffee pods meet that need as the pods are easy to recycle and are fully compatible with the Keurig brewer.

Cambio starts by small-batch roasting its coffee beans in California by its 5th generation Roast Master. “Our coffee is packed in patented pods, with 34% better extraction, a superior filter design, and fluted to create a better taste in each cup,” explained Ann Hutson, co-founder of Cambio Roasters. “The pods are completely recyclable and have unique, easy-peel lids with a tab that makes recycling even easier.”

Cambio Roasters is founded by business and life partners Kevin Hartley and Ann Hutson. Hartley brings coffee-related experience to Cambio from his prior role as chief innovation officer at Keurig Green Mountain. He oversaw the design and development of the new best-selling Keurig brewers, invented Keurig Cold and Keurig Connect and led hundreds of other strategic initiatives. Hutson built her career in communications across several different industries. At Cambio, she manages relationships —including the direct-to-consumer business and relationships with retailers and wholesalers.

“Creating a company that aligned with our values was important to us as we thought about producing a coffee pod. Just about anyone can roast coffee. But to roast great coffee that consumers can make at home with brewers they already have, AND it does good for the Earth and people? I am all in for that,” exclaimed Kevin Hartley, co-founder of Cambio Roasters. “Twenty-one per cent of households that use K-Cups, or 6.7 million households, wish there was a purpose-driven K-Cup brand. Consumers can feel good about using Cambio Roasters pods in their Keurig. Not only will consumers get a great cup of coffee, but they will also be able to easily recycle the Cambio Roasters pod, compost the container it all came in, and know that their purchase is helping coffee farming families.”

Cambio Roasters K-Cups are available in eight flavours, including Special Dark, French Roast, Sumatran, Colombian, House Blend, Donut Blend, Hazelnut, and Decaf, as well as a Variety Pack of all eight flavours. Cambio Roasters gives back 20% of profits to coffee-farming families through its relationship with Food 4 Farmers. For more information, visit: cambioroasters.com.

NatureWorks, the world’s leading manufacturer of low-carbon Ingeo PLA biopolymers, and IMA Coffee, global market leader in coffee handling, processing, and packaging, have announced that they have entered into a joint strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the market for high performing K-Cup compatible compostable single-serve coffee pods in North America. The multi-year partnership brings together NatureWorks’ decades of expertise with compostable materials, formulations, and processing technology with IMA’s industry-leading competencies and application-specific know-how encompassing all stages of coffee handling, processing, and packaging.

The pressure on the single serve coffee market to make more meaningful progress towards a more sustainable packaging solution has grown significantly in recent years. Consumers appreciate single-serve capsules for the convenient and quality brewing experience but see the packaging waste associated with a capsule as a detriment. Compostable capsules create the opportunity to not only address consumer concerns and divert the packaging away from landfills, but, perhaps more importantly, to recover the used coffee grounds, enabling their processing at a compost facility where they deliver valuable nutrients to the final compost.

Coffee capsules are complex structures where the capsule body, lidding, and filter must be precisely designed to deliver a consistently high-quality brewing experience. Before the capsules even reach consumers, it’s critical that these components perform well during assembly and filling as well as on the shelf and during brewing.

“At NatureWorks, we’ve seen tremendous interest in compostable single-serve pods,” says Flavio Di Marcotullio, global industry manager for NatureWorks. “Brand owners and roasters are responding to both consumer demands for more sustainable packaging and to circular economy directives that specify compostable packaging as a key enabler of recovering food waste for compost. To continue supporting this growth, we saw the opportunity to partner with IMA as they have long helped the single-serve coffee market implement innovative new packaging technologies and have a long-term commitment towards sustainable solutions.”

With this in mind, to give greater impetus to the topic and direct the production chain towards increasing environmental sustainability, in 2019 IMA launched IMA NoP – No Plastic Program. NOP (No-Plastic Program) means we promote eco-friendly plastic substitutes for the packages manufactured on IMA machines. Through the research and testing of alternative processes and materials, together with our partners, we foster plastic-free and sustainable, compostable packaging solutions. IMA has also established the Open Lab where Material Technologists study, develop, and test compostable and recyclable materials to be used on our packaging equipment,” says Nicola Panzani, IMA Coffee sales manager and IMA Coffee Petroncini CEO.

IMA’s Open Lab is a network of technological laboratories and testing areas dedicated to the research on sustainable materials, technologies, and production optimization processes. “Thanks to the implementation of the most modern digital infrastructures,” continues Panzani, “together with think tank spaces, environments dedicated to new generation of ideas and the prototyping of materials, we aim to build a connection between knowledge and skills coming from machines, packaging manufacturers and customers.”

Canada’s minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan Jr, has announced a $1-million investment to NEXE Innovations, formerly GCUP Technology Corporation, as part of the second phase of a Bioplastics Challenge aimed at helping small businesses reduce pollution by turning forest-based residue into sustainable domestic plastic material.

With this funding, NEXE Innovations will be able to focus on Phase 2 of its project, which supports:

 • Scaling up the manufacturing process of its Nespressocompatible pods, and
 • Improving the compatibility of bioplastics derived from wood-based biomass for early-stage commercialisation.

As part of Phase 1, NEXE developed a completely plant-based and compostable single-use coffee pod from bioplastic wood fibre.

Natural Resources Canada collaborated with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to develop this challenge as part of the Domestic Plastics Challenge under the federal government’s Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC). ISC is a $100 million programme dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing innovative and sustainable solutions to complex environmental challenges. The Government of Canada may then act as a first customer, helping these small businesses to commercialise their innovations, scale up their businesses and create good jobs for Canadians.

“Our government is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses. It is becoming increasingly important to invest in sustainable solutions that will support not only our economy but also our environment. When our government invests in innovative and sustainable work from small businesses like NEXE, we are growing the economy, building Canadian technological leadership and contributing to Canada’s fight against global warming,” said the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne,
minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

Dr Zachary Hudson, chief scientific officer at NEXE Innovations, commented: “We are grateful to the Government of Canada for this award, which reflects its commitment to nurturing innovative, Canadian-made solutions to some of the world’s most challenging problems. At NEXE, we have developed and validated sustainable plant-based materials that are better for the environment without compromising on the needs of the consumer. We look forward to bringing them to market with the support of Innovative Solutions Canada.”

NEXE Innovations Inc, a Canadian leader in plant-based materials science and advanced manufacturing technologies, has announced results from pilot-scale composting and sieving tests for measurement of disintegration performed on its NEXE Nespresso-Compatible Pods by OWS Labs that conforms to international standards.

“We are extremely pleased that our NEXE Nespresso-Compatible Pods achieved 100% disintegration within 10 weeks, which is a significant improvement over the testing standard of 90% disintegration in less than 12 weeks. Our Nespresso-Compatible Pods have set a high standard for our competitors,” said Darren Footz, chief executive officer of NEXE.

These results meet critical international standards required for certification as compostable materials, including American standards ASTM D6400 and D6868, European standard EN 13432, and International standard ISO 17088. The trials also found that NEXE Nespresso Compatible Pods had no negative effects on the quality of the resulting compost.

Zachary Hudson, chief scientific officer at NEXE, commented: “These outstanding results demonstrate that our Nespresso-Compatible Pods are ready for certification in both North America and Europe. Years of R&D have led to a sustainable product that does not compromise the taste profile the consumer demands, and that can be composted completely after use.”

NEXE’s pods are among the only patented compostable single-serve beverage pods designed to store more volume of product per capsule than other leading brands. Over 40 billion non-compostable single-serve beverage pods made from traditional plastic are currently discarded annually to landfills around the world.
