Today’s store brands/private label brands are not the ‘cheaper knock offs’ from years ago, they are innovative, on trend and hitting shelves faster than many national/multinational-branded products.

There’s a trendy new product on the shelf attracting a lot of consumer attention and it’s not from a national or multinational brand — it’s a store-owned/private label brand.

In a recent webinar entitled, “The Private Label Revolution: Is CPG having a Netflix Moment?”, Nik Modi, global co-head of consumer/retail equity research and HBC, beverage and packaged food analyst, RBC Capital Markets, LLC, and Hunter Thurman, founder/president, of consumer psychology and behaviour consultancy, Alpha Diver, discussed the growth of private label products within consumer packaged goods (CPG) and the impact they are having on branded CPG products.

Historically PL products have been used by lower income consumers and by higher income consumers when times were tough so they would ‘trade down’, but the latter would ‘trade up’ again when the situation improved. But, Nik Modi, said this time it’s different. “The percentage household penetration for private label products has increased over the past few quarters and has surpassed pre-Covid levels,” he said, noting that PL has experienced broad market share gains.

Modi said that a 2023 study showed that about USD $1.5 billion worth of sales shifted away from national brands and sales have also shifted from the grocery channel to the rest of food channels (discount, mass, club) where PL brands sales growth notably outpaced national brand sales growth. “The percentage price gap between PL and branded players has been volatile but is recently on a downward trend approaching the lowest levels seen since 2019,” he said, adding that while this should be good for brands, the problem is that the branded price is still really high. For consumers today, Modi explained, it’s not about trending down, about trending out.

Furthermore, the percentage of household penetration of PL CPG is correlated with age cohort, with higher penetration in households of older individuals, but currently, noted Modi, Gen X consumers have the highest buy rate. He also shared that baby boomers are also heavily involved in PL product. “Companies do not market to them anymore but baby boomers have the most disposable income because they have no one they need to spend money on but themselves. Brands tend to forget about them but baby boomers will big chunk of spending over next few years,” said Modi. (Sidenote, Modi said it is because of Japan’s large baby boomer population that the country is the biggest luxury market in the world.)

Over the long term, PL is projected to gain 5 pts of dollar share by 2030. And although beverages have historically had low PL participation, it is gaining market share as branded beverages continue to see comps loss.

Retailer initiatives are ramping up and becoming more sophisticated and AI is being overlaid to help them make better decisions. “There is a major shift happening in PL — perception changing, the market, category and industry is changing. Backward looking isn’t going to help,” said Hunter Thurman, president and founder of Alpha Diver.

Thurman said what happened with Netflix 20 years ago is happening with PL brands today. “Netflix used to offer knock DVD rentals, cheap, & convenient. Pl in the past offered knock-off products, cheaper. Then Netflix began to offer a new kind of entertainment: on-demand which elevated the frame of reference to cable TV. PL products introduced a new kind of brand: cross category and attractive prices that engaged a new kind of shopper. And while Netflix started offering original, exclusive content, PL brands are offering innovative exclusive products,” he said, adding that “no one saw the ‘Netflix disruptor’ coming when it first emerged.”

“Private label/store brands are the new disruptors—they can innovate faster than the national [multinational] brands, said Thurman. “We need to banish the ‘trade down to store brand’ mentality. Modern store brands are far from knockoffs, and it’s changing shopper psychology and decision-making. A new type of shopper is being engaged and it’s changing the marketplace. Realty is that a new type of shopper is being engaged via these store brands.”

Gone are the days of ‘national vs store brand’, today, Thurman says there are three types of brands: national, owned brands and value brands. To consumers, there is little difference between ‘national’ and ‘owned brands’.

Target Stores (favorite day) and Amazon (Aplenty) launched PL brands in spring that are on-point with current trends. Walmart launched bettergoods in April — a new PL brand focused on quality, unique, chef-inspired food items at an affordable price. “This brand does more than just compete on price. This is very different than what we’ve seen at Walmart because it is not entirely a price-based proposition,” said Modi. “bettergoods is offering trendier, unique products, not just about higher prices, different foods and flavours that even national brands are not offering.”

bettergoods is competing in categories such as coffee, dairy, non-dairy (almond milk), beverages, snacks, chocolate, etc. Interestingly, Modi noted that from an income point of view, those in the USD $125K+ income bracket are showing the highest household penetration by a wide margin thus far in the launch of bettergoods. “Walmart has recruited a lot of higher income households into their stores over the last couple of years. This is a way for them to keep these types of consumers.”

Both Modi and Thurman noted that with their unique, on-trend offerings, PL/store brands are engaging the growing, ever-important, ethnically diverse Gen Z consumer.

“Consumers today are not buying PL/’owned brands’ because they are cheaper, they are interested in them,” said Thurman. “Owned brands are creating more excitement so attracting the coveted shoppers, not about trading down on price. We must stop thinking about national vs PL/owned brand in such a binary way.”

New US brand LaDiDa is debuting the world’s first ready-to-drink oat milk lattes infused with hemp extract, from former CEO and co-founder of Kombrewcha, Ariel Glazer.

LaDiDa is made with natural ingredients and each can contains 15mg of full-spectrum hemp extract, organically grown in Colorado and Oregon. With 10 lab-tested botanical terpenes and CBD, LaDiDa’s water-soluble hemp oil is extracted using an environmentally-friendly cold-pressed method and tested in a third party lab for potency (LaDiDa contains less than 0.3% THC). Each variety features a base of pure oat milk, with only oats and water as the two ingredients.

“I created LaDiDa to reimagine the lattes I love, with convenient delivery and powerhouse ingredients that support overall wellness. I used to drink a turmeric or matcha lattes from my local coffee shop almost every day; with LaDiDa, I’ve turned my favorite daily beverage into an effortless home ritual, with the added goodness of full-spectrum hemp extract. With each flavour designed to complement morning, noon and night, I’m so excited to help our community reset and re-energise throughout the day,” said Glazer.

LaDiDa is currently available in two flavours, Matcha and Golden Turmeric, with the additional Honey Lavender flavour set to launch in May 2020.

Matcha – made with Japanese matcha containing a gentle dose of caffeine, along with antioxidants and amino acids including L-Theanine.

Golden Turmeric – a caffeine-free blend of organic turmeric (which naturally contains the antioxidant curcumin), cardamom, an organic chai blend, wildflower honey and organic black pepper extract.

Honey Lavender – made with soothing, floral lavender and designed as a modern nightcap.

LaDiDa ships directly to consumers in 41 states, with on-demand delivery (45-90 minutes) on offer in selected regions. Additionally, consumers can sign up once on LaDiDa’s website (DrinkLaDiDa.com) and order via free text message any time after that, between 9:00am-6:00pm.

Australian beer brand Victoria Bitter recently launched a beer-inspired limited-edition ‘VB Tea’ for Australian cricket fans to consume while watching The Ashes cricket series, currently taking place in the UK.

The product was created as many Australian sports lovers are often required to stay up late or wake up early in the morning to watch the cricket series when televised from the UK, and VB Tea gives them a viable alternative to beer.

VB Tea is non-alcoholic and made with a blend of black ceylon tea with Victoria Bitter’s signature Super Pride hops.

Katrina Diamonon, consumer analyst at GlobalData, said: “The campaign presents some promising routes to innovation for the tea category in general. The hot drinks category is not renowned for exceptionally exciting or dynamic innovation. However, there is evidence that consumers still seek novelty when shopping for these products.

According to GlobalData’s 2018 Q4 survey, almost one-fifth (19%) of global consumers ‘often’ experiments with new or different varieties of hot drinks while an additional 25% of consumers ‘sometimes’ try new varieties when they want to try something new. Tea products that are inspired by alcoholic drinks have the ability to inject excitement and indulgence into hot drink consumption.

Notably, the reverse also applies with regards to opportunities in alcoholic drink innovation. As alcohol-free alternatives to beer, wine and spirits increasingly appeal to health-conscious consumers, there is a growing demand for options beyond the standard fizzy drinks and juice.

Indeed, GlobalData’s 2018 Q3 survey found that 45% of global consumers are interested in ‘sophisticated’ or ‘adult-style’ soft drinks as alternatives to alcoholic drinks.

Diamonon concluded: “Products that leverage the authenticity and often complexity of tea can elevate a non-alcoholic drink to something more refined.”

Wildcrafter Botanicals has launched its first range of coffees, blended with botanicals.

Founded by physician, Tieraona Low Dog, M.D, she is considered one of the world’s leading experts in botanicals.

“Science is our foundation, and nature is our inspiration. Formulation is as much an art as it is a science. Whenever you’re going to blend botanicals together, you’re always thinking about the overall effect that you’re trying to impart. I spent four years working to create four efficacious, botanically infused blends that would allow you to still have a great cup of coffee,” said Dr. Low Dog.

The four blends are made with 100% organic fair-trade Arabica coffee beans and organic botanicals. The coffee comes from women and community-owned farming cooperatives in Columbia and is delivered in fully recyclable K-Cups.

This delivery system was selected as not only is it convenient, when high heat and pressure of water is forced through coffee infused with botanicals, it delivers the ideal extraction for consistent amounts of botanicals in every cup.

Wildcrafter tests every single batch of coffee and botanicals for over 300 herbicides and pesticides. The coffee is Certified Fair Trade and all four blends are USDA certified organic.

The four blends include:

  • Inner Warrior blend – this coffee includes 400 milligrams of rhodiola root, 200 milligrams of lion’s mane mushroom, and 200 milligrams of Peruvian maca root.
  • Creative Genius blend, which contains 200 milligrams of bacopa and 200 milligrams of ashwagandha root.
  • Immune Shield blend includes 200 milligrams of astragalus root, 200 milligrams of reishi mushroom and 200 milligrams of elderberry.
  • Spiritual Chill is a blend of decaffeinated coffee with 250 milligrams of chamomile, 200 milligrams of holy basil and 200 milligrams of passionflower.

“At Wildcrafter Botanicals, we are committed to doing good for people and the planet. We were very intentional in the development of our products, ensuring our botanically infused coffees were as convenient, accessible, flavorful, effective, and good for the planet as possible. We cannot wait for you to try them and truly feel the difference,” said Dr. Low Dog.

Wildcrafter Botanicals can be purchased online at wildcrafter.com.

Nestlé has launched a new range of coffee products under the Starbucks brand to be available globally. The range consists of 24 products, including whole bean and ground, as well as the first-ever Starbucks capsules developed using Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto systems.

This is the first product launch since the two companies formally joined forces in August last year and created a global coffee alliance.

“Our two teams have done an outstanding job in just six months developing a range of new and exciting premium coffees, crafted with care and passion, combining Nestlé’s coffee and system know-how with the Starbucks coffee, roasting and blending expertise,” said Patrice Bula, executive vice president, head of strategic business units, marketing, sales and president of Nespresso.

In the coming days, Nestlé will start rolling out these products in several markets across Asia, Europe, South America, the Middle East and the US. Customers around the world will be able to enjoy their favorite Starbucks coffee at home when the products become widely available in grocery stores and major online platforms.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide our premium high-quality Starbucks coffees to customers at home across the world’s most popular single-serve platforms, the Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto systems,” said John Culver, group president, Starbucks International, Channel Development and Global Coffee and Tea. “This announcement further extends the global reach of Starbucks brand as we expand into new channels as part of a global coffee alliance with Nestlé.”

The new range of coffee products includes a variety of signature Starbucks blends and single-origin coffees, as well as a selection of classic beverages such as Caramel Macchiato and Cappuccino.

All the products are made from 100% high-quality arabica coffee, ethically sourced from farmers in the world’s premier coffee growing regions.

Through the global coffee alliance, Nestlé has the perpetual rights to market Starbucks consumer packaged goods and foodservice coffee and tea products around the world, outside of Starbucks coffee houses, and excluding ready-to-drink products.

The agreement will consolidate Nestlé’s leading position in the global coffee business while significantly strengthening Nestlé’s coffee portfolio in North America.
