In my 14 November blog, I discussed this year’s PACK EXPO International (3-6 November, Chicago, Illinois), and indicated that once again, sustainability was front and center. Sustainability, in all forms, has been prevalent at all PACK EXPO shows for several years — new packaging materials, new initiatives, new regulations, etc., were major themes of this year’s exhibition.

For example, McCormick Place and show organizer, PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, worked with Dow, the official sustainability partner and the official sponsor of show floor recycling at PACK EXPO International (PEI), to minimize the environmental impact of the event and divert as much waste as possible from landfills.

One of the strongest components of all PACK EXPO exhibitions is roster of educational sessions, and this year was no exception. There were myriad sustainability-related educational presentations at the show, which tackled topics such as sustainable technology and materials innovations, the use of recycled content and renewable materials, transformation of waste, circularity, refill/reuse options, life cycle assessment, sustainable package design, reduction in emissions, extended producer responsibility, and data collection.

In the Plastics Sustainability Through Collaboration session, Patrick Krieger, vice president, sustainability at the Plastics Industry Association (PIA), discussed how the packaging industry is evolving to develop solutions that are more circular and sustainable and how the plastic packaging value chain is coming together to promote innovative products and programs that address industry needs. Krieger said that with regard to sustainability, the plastics industry is focusing on three main areas:

 • Promoting a circular plastics economy
 • Eliminating plastic in the environment
 • Using resources responsibly.

One of the PIA’s newest programs is Operation Clean Sweep, which promotes zero plastic loss, that is, making sure no resin is lost during manufacturing.

In the Sustainability Central pavilion, Amazon – which stated it has reduced packaging per shipment by 41% since 2015 – presented the Elevating Packaging for E-Commerce to Boost Customer Experience session. Amazon executives discussed how to enhance the customer experience while protecting products and minimizing packaging waste. “Shoppers want less packaging, they want it to be recyclable, and they are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging,” said Kirsten Freiheit, head of North America partner engagement, sustainable packaging at Amazon. She shared that although shoppers want reduced packaging, e-commerce packaging needs more protection.

Heather Smith, senior business development manager, sustainable packaging at Amazon informed attendees how companies can improve customer satisfaction with packaging design, so “you can build excitement with the ‘unboxing experience’.” She added that branded packaging enhances customer experience.

The Paper & Packaging Board, which was exhibiting in the Sustainability Central pavilion, highlighted its new campaign to help promote carton recycling. P&PB executives, noting that 89% of consumers prefer paper-based shipping materials, explained that food and beverage cartons are made primarily out of responsibly-sourced paperboard, a renewable, plant-based material, and contain some of the highest quality fiber available in the recycling industry. P&PB’s new program wants companies to add the recycling logo to their carton packages to remind consumers to recycle their cartons. Carton recycling is available to more than 62% of US households and that number is growing every day. Recycled cartons become paper towels, tissues, office and writing paper, and sustainable building materials to name just few of the many products.

There were also a number of sessions dealing with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) or Packaging Producer Responsibility. EPR is a public policy mechanism that requires packaging producers (generally product brand owners) to help fund the recovery of their packaging. How funding is set, what the program goals are and who manages the system differs across the various states that have passed legislation. In 2025, many packaging policies relating to EPR will take effect. For example, California’s EPR law includes specific source reduction requirements for plastic packaging. Several other states are also now considering source reduction requirements though legislation: Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Washington.

The largest packaging and processing show of the year, PACK EXPO International, took place 3-6 November with significant crowds throughout its four-day stint at McCormick Place in Chicago. A record number of 2,700 exhibitors occupied 1.32 million net square feet of space, making PACK EXPO International the largest show in its history and the biggest event at McCormick Place this year.

A trend that began post-Covid with trade shows that have a Sunday start date occurred at PACK EXPO International as well — lower attendance on the first day. However, attendance quickly picked up beginning Monday as show organiser, PMMI (The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies), reported that the show brought together 48,000 attendees and 29,500 exhibitor personnel, reaching 77,500 in total attendance. International attendance increased 19% over 2022 (PEI is a biennial exhibition).

“PACK EXPO International 2024 has truly raised the bar for what an industry event can achieve,” said Jim Pittas, president and CEO, PMMI. “This show has not only grown in scale but also in substance, attracting attendees and exhibitors from every corner of the industry. The connections made here are invaluable, reinforcing PACK EXPO’s role as an unmatched platform for innovation, collaboration, and progress across the packaging and processing landscape.”

The show has significantly grown year over year with a 10% increase in exhibit space and 24% increase in number of exhibitors from PACK EXPO International 2022. “All across the board, our numbers have increased. Exhibitors continue to showcase top innovations, and attendees are flocking to see the latest solutions to their manufacturing challenges,” said Laura Thompson, vice president of trade shows at PMMI. “It’s not just the size of our show which draws people in – it’s the quality.”

With seven pavilions tailored to meet industry demands, new show features like Sustainability Central and Emerging Brands Central, and show resources to help attendees plan their days, attendees found value throughout the show.

Exhibitors found the show rewarding with plenty of opportunities for sales leads.

“PACK EXPO International is a very important packaging show for our business in the U.S. market and the automation industry,” said Jonathan Titterton, CEO, Coesia North America. “We appreciate the opportunity to discuss with our customers’ face-to-face how customised solutions are helping them with greater flexibility, efficiency, and productivity.”

There were ample suppliers to the coffee and tea industries exhibiting at PEI this year, in addition to Coesia, including IMA SpA, Syntegon, GEA Processing, Fres-co, Buhler, CAMA Packaging, Tetra Pak, Graphic Packaging, Amcor, and Pacteon, among many others.

Attendees were able to make valuable connections off the show floor as well with popular networking events like PACK gives BACK™, sponsored by Rockwell Automation, seeing nearly 3,000 attendees enjoy comedy from Nate Bargatze to benefit the PMMI Foundation. The popular Packaging & Processing Women’s Leadership Network (PPWLN) breakfast was held on 5 November with guest speaker Lisa Sun, founder & CEO of retail brand and lifestyle company GRAVITAS giving an inspiring presentation. The Young Professionals Networking Reception, sponsored by Beckhoff Automation LLC at Flight Chicago gave emerging leaders in packaging and processing a chance to build new relationships with their peers.

Looking to the workforce of the future, PACK EXPO International featured several activities for local students to encourage their interest in the industry. Events like the PACK Challenge, sponsored by PepsiCo, and the Amazing Packaging Race, sponsored by Emerson Discrete Automation Group, had students use their creativity and ingenuity to conquer real-life manufacturing challenges.

The next PACK EXPO event will be the new PACK EXPO Southeast, scheduled for 10-12 March 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information and to register, visit packexposoutheast.com. PACK EXPO Las Vegas will take place 29 September through 1 October 2025. For more information, visit packexpolasvegas.com. The next PACK EXPO International is scheduled for 18-21 October 2026. Uganda’s coffee industry achieved global success at the 10th International Competition for ‘Originally Roasted Coffees’ in Paris, winning three gold, one silver, three bronze, and eight gourmet medals.

Supported by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), a delegation of 12 Ugandan coffee roasters showcased standout brands such as Rubanga Coffee, Gorilla Highlands Coffee, and Volcafe Uganda.

Industry leaders celebrated the awards as a milestone for Uganda’s coffee quality improvements, though concerns were raised over proposed plans to merge UCDA with the agriculture ministry.

The Uganda Coffee Federation and other stakeholders praised UCDA’s role in positioning Ugandan coffee on the global stage and stressed the importance of maintaining quality and international participation.

Uganda’s coffee industry has achieved global recognition with an outstanding performance at the 10th International Competition for “Originally Roasted Coffees,” hosted by the Agency for the Valorisation of Agricultural Products (AVPA) in Paris. Backed by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), Team Uganda returned home with an impressive array of awards: three gold, one silver, three bronze, and eight gourmet medals, underscoring the nation’s commitment to premium-quality coffee production.

Represented by 12 skilled coffee roasters, Uganda’s delegation showcased the country’s exceptional quality and growing reputation in the international coffee market. Among the standout brands were Rubanga Coffee, Gorilla Highlands Coffee, Volcafe Uganda, Sasa Coffee, and Great Lakes Coffee House Blend, each distinguishing themselves among competitors from around the globe.

Celebrations erupted on social media as the news spread, with industry supporters and coffee enthusiasts praising the accomplishments. “UCDA’s performance is extremely nice, congratulations!” tweeted one admirer, a sentiment echoed widely online.

Sam Mugabi, chairperson of the Ankole Coffee Farmers Union, hailed the recent awards as a “big milestone for Ugandan coffee.” He noted that, historically, Uganda struggled with quality perception but has made strides, largely due to UCDA’s regulatory efforts to uphold quality and integrity standards across the supply chain. “If this position can be attained globally, it means we are moving forward,” said Mugabi, attributing the improvement to UCDA’s efforts.

Martin Maraka, chief executive officer of the Uganda Coffee Federation, praised the achievement and underscored the importance of Uganda’s ongoing participation in international coffee competitions. “Well done on continuing to improve coffee quality and participating in these contests,” said Maraka. He emphasized that competing on the global stage raises Uganda’s profile and strengthens its coffee industry.

The AVPA, a non-governmental, non-profit organization, celebrates agricultural excellence by recognizing quality and distinctiveness in coffee and other agricultural products. This year’s honors for Uganda underscore the country’s ascent as a competitive force in the global coffee landscape.

Foodservice is an ‘under tapped’ market for tea https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/35255/foodservice-is-an-under-tapped-market-for-tea/ https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/35255/foodservice-is-an-under-tapped-market-for-tea/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2024 14:59:34 +0000 https://www.teaandcoffee.net/?post_type=blog&p=35255 The future of away-from-home tea consumption is bright, particularly in the foodservice channel.

At the recent North American Tea Conference (NATC), which was held in Canada last month, many conversations centered around the challenges tea is battling on the production side (see the 27 September Editor’s Blog, NATC 2024 provided optimism amid challenging times for tea), but the manufacturing/consuming side is not without its issues.

In his presentation, Carman Allison, NielsenIQ, said that optimism around the consumers’ personal financial situation is lagging, especially in North America and EU markets, despite the rate of inflation slowing across the globe. He explained that this has created financial polarization, noting, “it’s about the haves and the haves less.”

Allison said that in a recent consumer survey (conducted over the summer), Nielsen observed a shift from cautious to conscious consumption. “Heading into 2025, the state of consumers is determined, with three types of consumers [emerging]: resilient, vigilante and intentional. Consumers are spending in a more strategic way — they prioritize at-home, planning and waste-avoidant spending.”

This behaviour, Allison said, has ‘redefined discount’. “Consumers have embraced (and expect) a broader value from the concept of ‘discount’,” which is impacting buying behaviour across the board, not just in food, beverage (coffee and tea included) and other CPG products.

In their presentations, both Shabnam Weber, president of the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada (THAC), which organized and hosted this year’s NATC, and Peter Goggi, president of the Tea Association of the USA, discussed how health and wellness are driving components for consumers’ purchases.

“Consumers are searching for authenticity and community. People are disillusioned, particularly those ages 16-25,” said Weber, “but what’s hot is wellness and it spans all demographics.”

And while this should greatly benefit tea, it has competition from other ‘healthy beverages’. “Humans don’t ‘drink more’ during day, that is, they do not increase the number of beverages they drink in a day,” said Goggi, “they are swapping out one beverage for another, not adding.”

One strong opportunity for tea is in foodservice. “Globally, tea as an away-from-home beverage has a significant share,” said Margot Swindall of Technomic, but tea has an opportunity to further expand its share. She said cold/iced/frozen teas are growing in both Canada and US. “Hot tea is more often used as a pick-me-up while iced tea tends to serve as a meal companion and thirst-quencher (especially in the US).”

Swindall highlighted the top global foodservice consumer markets for tea for both hot and cold/iced tea in her presentation:

Hot Tea

 1. Russia (47%)
 2. India (43%)
 3. Chile (37%)
 4. Indonesia (37%)
 5. Malaysia (36%)

Cold Tea

 1. Philippines (52%)
 2. Indonesia (45%)
 3. Malaysia (44%)
 4. S. (41%)
 5. Thailand (39%)

Swindall said that tea meets other beverages head on in creativity and format extension on the global foodservice stage (in terms of functionality, healthy indulgence, etc.), and consumers are willing to experiment with tea (flavours and formats) — all of which enhances tea’s ability to grow its share in the foodservice channel.

“Foodservice is the playground for tea trial, experimentation and innovation,” Swindall stressed. So not taking advantage of this ‘under tapped’ market would be quite a missed opportunity.

The post 2nd NOLA Coffee Festival expands while maintaining smaller-player focus appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
The 2nd NOLA Coffee Festival took place 27-28 September at the Morial Convention Center in downtown New Orleans.

The NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) Coffee Festival launched in 2023 to offer small, independent coffee shop owners in the Gulf States (of which there are approximately 3500) an opportunity – and one they might not otherwise have – to advance their coffee and business operator knowledge and skillsets through educational lectures and to network with other coffee professionals. The first show enjoyed participation from 50 industry exhibitors and 2,000 attending coffee professionals and the 2024 show expanded upon that number, despite the impact of Hurricane Helene, which hit the Gulf Coast the day before the NCF began.

Although the NOLA Coffee Festival (NCF) targets smaller independent coffee shop owners/operators, many of the large Louisiana-based nationals and multinationals such as Community Coffee, Folgers (1850, Café Bustelo), PJ’s Coffee and Reilly Foods (French Market Coffee, New England Coffee, Luzianne Tea) all supported the show with booths. New England Coffee even exhibited and sampled its recently released compostable K-Cup coffee line. Locally-based green coffee importer Westfeldt Coffee, storage and warehousing company, Dupuy, the Port of New Orleans, and Community Coffee sponsored a series of educational posters in the hall.

NCF, however, is for the smaller players, of which there were many including Onyx Coffee, Evolve Coffee & Matcha, French Truck Coffee, Congregation Coffee, Orleans Coffee, Cherry Street Coffee, Cultiva Coffee Importers, Current Crop Roasting Shop, ICC Coffee Merchants, and Café de Mi Pueblo, a Honduras-based, female-owned and operated farm and exporter. There were also allied service companies exhibiting such as AW Vanguard, an accounting firm.

Following last year’s show, attendees were surveyed about how the NCF could improve, co-founder Jim Currie said two suggestions topped the feedback list:

 • add more education around green coffee buying;
 • add more education and access to artesian tea products.

Currie said that the 2024 NOLA event featured more than 60 hours of professional classroom presentations, as well as tea exhibitors and educational sessions. One tea exhibitor was female-owned and operated Tea Please, from Houston, Texas, which offered a selection of unique loose-leaf tea blends with fun names such as Peach Cobbler, Strawberry Shortcake, Vanilla Horchata, and Breathe EZ.

I moderated the new tea panel session, which was designed for coffee shop owners who wanted to improve their tea sales as well as tea shop owners. However, after taking a quick survey to see who exactly was in audience, surprisingly, an overwhelming number of attendees were not professionals, rather, they were tea enthusiasts who came to the show (NCF opens attendance to non-professionals on the second day) to simply learn more about tea. Given that, the panellists and I had to pivot our planned talking points and focus, and what resulted was a lively and engaging Q&A and conversation.

Currie that said the trade show plans to expand its tea focus next year, and although consumers will always be welcome, NOLA Coffee Festival will not become a ‘consumer festival’ — it is primarily a B2B show. The 2025 NCF will take place 3-4 October at the Pontchartrain Convention Center in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, located a short distance from downtown.

Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico have all each successfully completed their 2024 Cup of Excellence (CoE) coffee competition and auction season.

Over the course of the six auctions, 21,661 bids were placed from buyers for the 192 winning lots. When the three minute clock struck zero at the end of the final auction, over 2.6 million dollars had been raised. Out of the 706 registered bidders 128 were successful placing the highest bid to own a winning lot.

Costa Rica garnered the highest gross auction amount of USD $655,786, almost $271,000 more than in 2023, although every country improved their totals from 2023. Honduras took home the top price of $136.50lb for its first place coffee. Together the 192 total lots averaged $21.54lb. 2024 was the first year that coffees were divided by processing technique. Natural, washed and experimentally processed coffees were all represented in the winning lots having been separated during the competition.

The full programme began in early Spring in Nicaragua with the call for farmer entries and it ended on Tuesday 13th July with Mexico holding its final very busy auction. Each country held a full 3-week competition to determine which coffees would score high enough to be awarded a CoE and sold online to the highest bidder. Coffees receiving a CoE award undergo intense scrutiny from both a national jury and an international jury during the competition process. The lots being auctioned scored between the minimum required score of 87 to a high of 93.62. A total of 172 professional cuppers from 24 countries scored the winners through the multiple phases of the competition process. A total of 39 lots scored over 90 points, 31 of the winning farms are owned by women and 37 are owned by farmers experiencing their first Cup of Excellence competition.

Sample sets of the winners were sent out to roasters wanting to score the coffees again at their place of business. Almost 500 complete sets of winning lots were sent to companies in North America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Each lot was also processed to meticulous standards and vacuum packed before the auctions occurred.

Honduras celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. Guatemala held its first CoE in 2001, Nicaragua in 2002, El Salvador in 2003, Costa Rica in 2007 and Mexico in 2012. Identification of farmers, infrastructure development, technical training and quality improvement are often the result of the Cup of Excellence programme.

London specialty coffee roaster, Pact Coffee, has been named among the top food and drink producers globally, after winning three Great Taste Awards.

It marks five winning years in a row for Pact Coffee, and the company’s Buenos Aires Decaf was one of only seven decaf coffees to win a two-star award this year.

Other winners were its seasonal single-origin, Rich & Chocolatey Christmas Filter, and its Single Estate Microlot Filter, which is available in Waitrose and Whole Foods stores.

The Great Taste Awards is recognised as the Oscars of the specialty food and drink world. The unmistakable black and gold Great Taste logo is a sign many consumers look for when buying food and drink, and it’s a stamp of excellence that is recognised by retailers and consumers alike.

Tens of thousands of products are put past the judges every year in a blind tasting, and the judge’s said Pact’s Decaf Buenos Aires “wears its decaf nature very lightly”.

Will Corby, Pact’s Director of Coffee, said: “We’re thrilled to mark five years in a row of winning Great Taste Awards, and this year is particularly special to us”.

“We’ve stuck to our guns on decaf coffee since we began, always roasting the same standard of coffee that’s on our non-decaf menu no more than seven days before delivery. This is a marked difference from a lot of other decaf on the market, and it’s fantastic to see it awarded with the famous black and gold logo”.

The award rounds off an eventful 12 months for Pact Coffee, who have launched in Waitrose and Whole Foods and roasted their highest annual total of coffee yet over the period.

Blue Bottle Coffee is honouring its New Orleans-Style Iced Coffee with the launch of NOLA Craft Instant Coffee Blend and roll-out of refreshed packaging with a bold new look for all NOLA products over the coming months.

Now available, NOLA Craft Instant Coffee Blend marries the flavour of Blue Bottle’s New Orleans-Style Iced Coffee with the convenience of soluble coffee, allowing coffee lovers to enjoy this indulgent drink anywhere. Affectionately known as NOLA, Blue Bottle’s New Orleans-Style Iced Coffee has become one of the brand’s most popular drinks, with around three million sold annually in cafés across the US and Asia. First introduced in 2005 when Blue Bottle founder James Freeman started selling it at farmers markets in the San Francisco Bay Area as an iced-latte alternative, NOLA is inspired by the traditional New Orleans tradition of serving sweet, milky coffee cut with chicory. Over the years, the recipe has been perfected to achieve a delightful balance of coffee, chicory, and sweetness offering a harmonious experience in every sip. Crafted from Blue Bottle’s specialty coffee and chicory blend, the new soluble coffee blend is transformed into aromatic granules that dissolve instantly, delivering the classic NOLA taste with ease.

“In celebration of longtime guest favourite, NOLA, we’re proud to introduce NOLA Craft Instant Coffee Blend as a way for more people to enjoy this coveted drink,” said Benjamin Brewer, senior director, global innovation and coffee quality at Blue Bottle Coffee, Oakland, California. “After countless tastings, we perfected NOLA Instant, ensuring it encapsulates the signature flavour that fans of the drink have come to cherish. With this new addition, alongside our diverse range of NOLA creations and ‘Summer of NOLA’ festivities, we invite everyone to indulge in the distinct taste of NOLA wherever they may be.”

Blue Bottle has continuously expanded NOLA offerings, evolving from a singular beverage into an entire experience with a diverse product portfolio. In its café, Blue Bottle has introduced variations such as Hot NOLA, seasonal flavours, and formats like NOLA Cola, NOLA Shakeratos, and NOLA Floats. The introduction of Iced NOLA cartons in 2010 further broadened its availability to grocery stores, where it has remained a top seller in natural grocery stores. Meanwhile, the introduction of offerings such as Blue Bottle’s New Orleans-Style Coffee and Roasted Chicory Kit and NOLA Concentrate make it easy to enjoy the drink at home. Most recently, Blue Bottle introduced NOLA Almonds, chocolate-dipped almonds infused
with New Orleans-Style Coffee in Blue Bottle cafés.

NOLA Craft Instant Coffee Blend is available in a package of five pre-portioned single-serve sachets (USD $10), a three-pack set of 15 sachets ($26), and in a one-box set with Blue Bottle’s Subminimal NanoFoamer ($47). The items can be purchased online, in Blue Bottle cafés, or on Blue Bottle’s TikTok Shop.

The packaging and processing show, Pack Expo International 2024 (3-6 November McCormick Place, Chicago), will spotlight sustainability with new and expanded show resources to help brands lessen energy consumption, minimise waste, and reduce overall carbon footprint.

Making its Pack Expo International debut, Sustainability Central will explore packaging sustainability and what it means to brands. This show floor destination will include expert speakers and a look at actionable, sustainable solutions in manufacturing, materials, recovery, logistics, analytics, and design. • For advanced online planning, attendees can use the Sustainability Solutions Finder, a professionally vetted and searchable tool, to locate exhibitors with environmentally friendly products and machinery. The tool goes live in late July, and a kiosk will also be located in Sustainability Central.
 • On-site, attendees can look for the Pack Expo Green icon to identify sustainable materials and machinery suppliers and educational sessions focused on sustainability. A complete list of current Pack Expo Green exhibitors can be found in the online exhibitor directory.

“We’ve intentionally partnered with companies, exhibitors, and vendors to integrate sustainability into every component of Pack Expo International, including educational programming, show features, and how we do business as the largest packaging and processing event this year,” said Laura Thompson, PMMI’s vice president of Trade Shows.

In addition to the new and expanded education and show navigation resources, attendees can expect the return of familiar features and initiatives to support their eco-conscious efforts:

 • Sustainability focused educational sessions also will take place at the Innovation Stage, Processing Innovation Stage, and Industry Speaks.

World of Coffee Copenhagen welcomed a record-breaking 12,600+ attendees from 140 countries, marking it the largest and most diverse attendance in the event’s history. The specialty coffee trade show in Europe experienced a remarkable 26% increase in attendance compared to the previous year, with 492 exhibiting companies — the highest participation ever. The event was supported by Host Sponsor BWT water+more, Platinum Sponsor Barista Attitude, Gold Sponsor Alpro and Portrait Country, Peru.

The vibrant three-day event was packed with significant activities, including the launch of the Green Coffee Connect programme and the Retail Buyers Lounge in Europe. These new features provided platforms for learning, networking, and fostering business partnerships. The Sustainable World of Coffee initiative, in collaboration with Caravela Coffee and supported by Barista Attitude, inspired positive changes within the coffee industry, says the organisation, such as planting over 6,000 trees, supporting 150+ farms, and offsetting 1,600-2,000 tons of CO₂.

Attendees also enjoyed the Best New Product Competition, Coffee Design Awards, Cupping Exchange, and two Roaster Villages and the event was highlighted by several awards programmes.

A partnership was announced between Cup of Excellence, Alliance for Coffee Excellence, and Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). This collaboration aims to set new industry standards and enhance the entire coffee ecosystem. Key initiatives include supporting the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) form, increasing visibility at CoE competitions, offering collaborative training programmes, and launching educational initiatives to advance industry skills.

World of Coffee Copenhagen also marked the next phase of the SCA Coffee Value Assessment (CVA), introducing three new cupping standards, a beta version of the extrinsic assessment, and updated supporting documents. These resources aim to integrate the CVA into daily practice, fostering a growing community of professionals dedicated to discovering value in coffee. Start using the SCA Coffee Value Assessment and its tools at sca.coffee/value-assessment.

The 2024 Best New Product Awards winners are:

 • People’s Choice: SQUEAKY – The King Eddy (Electric)
 • Commercial Coffee Preparation & Serving Equipment: Bellwether Coffee – “Bellweather Shop Roaster”
 • Consumer Coffee Preparation & Serving Equipment: Fellow – “Aiden Precision Coffee Maer”

 • Open Class: Kavekalmar – “ROASTINO Manual Roaster”
 • Specialty Non-Coffee Beverage Stand alone: DRYK Brew – “DRYK Pea Barista”

Four World Coffee Championships were held, including World Latte Art, World Coffee in Good Spirits, World Coffee Roasting, and Cezve/Ibrik Championships.

World of Coffee Copenhagen was made possible through the generous support of the 2024 Portrait Country, Peru. “We are very proud to be the Portrait Country at World of Coffee 2024, showcasing the quality of Peruvian specialty coffees to international buyers. Coffee has become one of Peru’s traditional agricultural export products, with exports totaling USD 829 million in 2023. This participation represents a great opportunity for our producers,” said Claricia Tirado, executive president of PROMPERÚ. The event was also supported by Host Sponsor BWT water+more, Platinum Sponsor Barista Attitude, and Gold Sponsor Alpro.

I always enjoy attending the annual Fancy Food Show in New York City because it is the one trade show where I do not feel like a ‘stalker’…Before calling the authorities, let me explain. Whether I attend a conference, convention or trade show, I am constantly staring (squinting these days) at attendees to try to read their badges, and often following them – or chasing them – down aisles if it is an executive from a coffee or tea company with whom I would really like to speak. At the Fancy Food Show, food and beverage companies are the exhibitors so rather than utilising my chase skills, I am able to speak with them at their booths, which is refreshing, more civilised, and frankly a lot less exhausting!

Companies are often introducing new products or brands or displaying their recent launches at the Fancy Food Show (which took place between 23-25 June this year), so it is also the perfect opportunity to sample new coffee and tea SKUs. Most companies exhibiting at the show look to gain or expand their retail distribution in the United States. Whittard, for example, is a well-known and highly regarded English tea brand –established in 1886 – but it began to expand its presence in the US only recently so the show is an ideal place to meet retailers. Some companies exhibit hoping to find distributors to launch their products in US stores. For example, Shun Tea, from Japan, which was promoting its Camellia sinensis stem-based matcha called ‘bowcha’ and Brewix from India, which offers black, green and herbal and botanical teas in plastic-free, sugarcane-based packaging, were both hoping to find distributors to help bring their products in the US market.

On the coffee side, licensed brands were strong with many of the established companies (those already available at retail but looking to expand their distribution). White Coffee has long offered an array of licensed brands in its coffee assortment such as Harry & David, Entenmann’s, Jim Bean, Bailey’s and Peanuts. Two of its newest licensed ground coffee products are M&M’s and Snickers branded coffee, which join Twix and Dove.

Two Rivers Coffee from New Jersey also offers several licensed coffee products including ice cream brands Friendly’s and Cold Stone Creamery. Its newest item is Kellogg’s Eggo-branded coffee. According to Sam Blaney, vice president of sales and marketing, this is the first time Kellogg’s has licensed the Eggo name to another F&B product. Flavours for the single-serve coffee line include vanilla, maple syrup, cinnamon toast, chocolate chip and blueberry. When I asked who they are targeting with the Eggo coffee line, Blaney said it’s a nostalgia brand so he believes the line will appeal to anyone who grew up eating Eggo waffles, and of course, Gen Z, because that demo tends to enjoy sweet flavours.

New English Teas Ltd has also specialised in licensed products such as Beatrix Potter and tea sporting the Royals such as Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles, and Prince William and Princess Kate (technically, it may be Kate, the Princess of Wales). At the Fancy Food Show, New English Teas was highlighting its new Harry Potter line, which ranged from small decorative tins to beautiful large canisters and included a variety of flavours in both loose leaf tea and tea bags.

Unsurprisingly, the most innovation was in the ready-to-drink segment. Boba/bubble tea was ubiquitous, offering a variety of flavours (mango, passionfruit green tea; peach oolong tea; mixed berry hibiscus, etc.) including new tapioca and juice-based boba flavours, and instant bubble tea and instant popping boba kits. There were myriad companies offering new coffee and RTD drinks from cold brewed, to lightly sweetened and unsweetened, those with plant-based additives, and of course, new flavours, such as a lavender and maple oat milk latte from Dripdash, but the real innovation was in functional RTD coffee and tea.

Frujava won the Sofi Gold Award from the Specialty Food Association in the Energy Drink Waters & Functional Beverages category for its coffee bean and green coffee extract-based Cherry Vanilla Energy Drink. Frujava is targeting those consumers who would like the ‘energy’ benefits that energy drinks provide – each can contains 80mg of caffeine – but naturally, as the caffeine is derived from coffee. The drink tasted more like a semi-sparkling juice so it will appeal to those who may not want a soda but do want caffeine yet not necessarily a cup of coffee or a typical energy drink, both of which have much higher levels of caffeine.

Monatea, from South Africa – which was also looking for a distributor – was promoting its cold-brew sparkling rooibos drink (a subtle sparkling tea) that is caffeine-free, organic, has no sugar and only one calorie in distinct flavours such as ginger/peach/African olive leaf, sage/lime/Cape Mint, and hibiscus/berry/buchu. For those who prefer a sweetened beverage, Monatea also offers lightly sweetened versions. Many of the ingredients are native to only the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa, which adds to the uniqueness and originality of the drinks.

At this year’s World of Coffee event in Copenhagen, AluSense is introducing its newest innovation, BioSense: Nespresso-compatible home compostable capsules.

100% Bio-Based Capsules

With the largest production capacity in empty compatible aluminium capsules, AluSense products are sold in over 80 countries worldwide. AluSense offers the first capsule consisting of 80% recycled aluminium and CO2-neutral accreditation, ensuring zero impact on the environment.

With over ten years of experience in optimising aluminium mono-material capsules and being the first to launch Nespresso-compatible capsules, AluSense has now taken on the challenge of introducing the best 100% bio-based and home compostable coffee capsule to the market.

Why Choose BioSense Home Compostable Coffee Capsules?

The unique mono-body design and custom dome shape enable packing over 20% more coffee into each capsule, the highest volume in the home compostable market. Additionally, the capsules provide superior protection against oxygen and moisture, ensuring optimal preservation of customers’ coffee’s flavour. Simplicity, Quality, and Efficiency are the three key pillars of AluSense’s design philosophy. Through this approach, it achieves excellence, not only in the cup but also for the environment. Customers can choose from six unique colours, or customise their capsules with an embossed logo and/or a PMS color of their choice.

Certified

BioSense home compostable coffee capsules are 100% made from second-generation end-use bio-based materials. No PLA, plastic, oil, bisphenol A, or fossil fuels are used.

Thanks to their composition, AluSense’s capsules are fully compostable, as demonstrated by its OK compost HOME certification. BioSense holds certifications from Hansecontrol, SGS, TUV, ISSC, and CO2 Neutral.

Colombini

Colombini logo

ANGEL, THE GREAT LITTLE ONE.

As per our industrial grinders, ANGEL is a high-tech product, equipped with discs in tungsten carbide (hardness: 1300 Vickers) and very high precision adjustment with resolution of 2 microns and digital display of discs position. Due to its solidity and high precision, it can produce batches of ground coffee in continuous cycle, with a capacity of 90-120 kg/h. The duration of the discs is in order of 40-80 tons, depending on fineness of ground coffee.

ANGEL can also grind Turkish coffee, with cardamom too; in this case, the capacity is around 50 Kg/h.

It is very useful for laboratories, in order to repeat very similar results of Colombini’s industrial grinders.

All the ANGELs are equipped with a cooling system by ventilation and inverter to adjust the RPM of the discs.

Five different versions can be provided and the prices are all similar.

The LAB and ST.V versions are equipped with a manual device that ensures, by means of a simple hand gesture, that the discharge duct remains cleaned inside every time a ground coffee package is filled.

The RTM.V and the RTM.V4 are equipped with an automatic cleaning system of the exhaust duct, very helpful when working in continuous cycle for several minutes/hours.

World of Coffee is set to take place from 27 – 29 June 2024, welcoming over 400 exhibitors and more than 10,000 attendees to the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. Alongside the return of choice show features such as Best New Product, recognising new products judged on their quality and value to the specialty coffee and tea industry, and Coffee Design Awards, celebrating great design as an important function in distinguishing specialty coffee; this year, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is introducing new features.

Retail Buyers Lounge:

For the first time, World of Coffee presents the Retail Buyers Lounge, a dedicated space tailored for coffee professionals with buying power in retail operations. This exclusive area, open to select attendees, offers an ideal environment for skill-sharing, learning, and networking among global coffee retail industry experts. The Retail Buyers Lounge provides a comfortable retreat off the show floor, where participants can catch up on emails, connect over a cup of coffee, and learn about the latest trends impacting the industry.

In addition to a relaxing space, the Retail Buyers Lounge will host a series of short talks and panel discussions featuring industry experts. These sessions are designed to offer invaluable access and insights, empowering retail buyers to make informed decisions and stay competitive in the fast-evolving coffee market.

Green Coffee Connect:

Green Coffee Connect is another exciting addition to World of Coffee Copenhagen 2024. This event is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for the green coffee industry, offering participants a dynamic platform for learning and networking.

At Green Coffee Connect, attendees can engage in Green Coffee Conversations, where leading industry experts share their insights and expertise. Whether you’re a seasoned green coffee trader or new to this vibrant sector, Green Coffee Connect offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and forge valuable connections. Participation in Green Coffee Connect is completely free, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to join us on this journey of growth and collaboration.

Sustainable World of Coffee:

In Copenhagen, SCA is combining forces to take decisive action in supporting producers facing environmental challenges – directing financial support to coffee farmers in Latin America, who will plant native trees that contribute to soil health, reduce erosion, and sequester carbon. These initiatives are in partnership with Caravela Coffee, a Latin America green coffee exporter and importer and recognised leader in green coffee sustainability, and Barista Attitude. These organisations support the SCA Sustainable Specialty Coffee Agenda and are working together to create an innovative offset strategy for SCA’s trade shows, with impact closer to coffee farms and landscapes, and as an avenue for promoting equitable value distribution across the coffee supply chain.

Other sustainability activities at the event include a ceremony and panel discussion recognising the 2024 Sustainability Award Winners in the For-Profit and Non-Profit category, happening Thursday 27 June.

In addition to the new features on the show floor, there will be four World Coffee Championships taking place at World of Coffee. The 2024 World Latte Art Championship (WLAC), World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (WCIGS), World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC) and the Cezve/Ibrik Championship, showcasing the world’s top coffee professionals as they compete for the title of World Champion.

World of Coffee Copenhagen is made possible through the support of its 2024 Portrait Country, Peru. “We are very proud to be the Portrait Country at the World of Coffee 2024, which will allow us to showcase the quality of Peruvian specialty coffees to international buyers. Coffee has become one of Peru’s traditional agricultural export products, with its main markets in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2023 alone, coffee exports totaled USD 829 million. Therefore, Peru’s participation in this fair represents a great opportunity for our producers to achieve greater commercial contacts and to finalise future coffee shipments,” said Claricia Tirado, executive president of PROMPERÚ.

Join us in Copenhagen from 27 – 29 June 2024, for three days of innovation, networking, and industry leadership within specialty coffee. With the addition of exciting new show features, World of Coffee Copenhagen 2024 promises to be an essential event for coffee professionals looking to network, learn, and lead in the industry.
