Klatch Coffee Debuts World’s Most Expensive Brew
Southern California specialty coffee roaster Klatch Coffee will begin selling the world’s most expensive cup of coffee in November, offering consumers a taste of Esmerelda Geisha 601 for USD $55 per eight-ounce pour. Klatch acquired 11 pounds of the rare coffee, becoming the only coffee roaster in the US to procure a quantity of the beans, which sold for a record-breaking price of USD $601 per pound in an international auction. The coffee will be available exclusively at a series of ticketed events at Klatch Coffee’s Rancho Cucamonga location and for purchase online starting 18 November. The second ticketed event date has not yet been announced.
Klatch Coffee estimates it will be able to brew approximately 250 eight-ounce cups (15-grams of beans) of the award-winning Esmeralda Geisha 601, giving coffee connoisseurs an opportunity to experience what industry experts consider to be one of the finest, most distinctive cups of coffee ever brewed. Klatch’s experts will oversee the roasting process of the coffee for each ticketed event at its tasting room.
For those who are unable to attend the tasting events but would still like to experience this unique coffee, special 15-gram packages of pre-roasted beans, including brewing instructions, will be available to order online at www.klatchroasting.com. Each purchase of Esmeralda Geisha 601 will come with instructions on how to properly brew it and a souvenir mug. Tickets for the events will go on sale on Klatch’s website within the next week.

Grown in the rich soil of the hills of Volcan Baru, Panama, the Esmeralda Geisha 601 varietal, also known as Esmerelda Geisha Cañas Verdes Natural, originated as 1385 pounds of red ripe coffee cherries handpicked from a coffee lot known as Montaña from Panama’s Hacienda La Esmerelda farm. After drying out for eight days on a concrete patio, the cherries reached an ideal humidity level of 10.5 percent before undergoing rigorous processing that culled the batch down to 150 pounds. Earning high scores at the Best of Panama Competition in May 2017, the varietal went on to place first in the Exotic Naturals Category, after which the remaining 100 pounds went up for auction and broke the previous sale record of USD $350 per pound, set by the same farm.
Roaster and retailer Klatch Coffee was founded in Rancho Cucamonga, California, in 1993 by Mike Perry, a former chemical engineer who blends science and artistry with a passion for coffee. In September, Klatch Coffee became the first and only specialty roaster to win the Golden Bean Award for its espresso three years in a row.
