Extract Coffee launches Kickflip espresso to help Ethiopian skateboarders

Bristol-based Extract Coffee Roasters has launched a limited edition espresso called Kickflip, as part of a campaign to encourage skaters to donate their spare boards to charity Ethiopia Skate.

Kickflip Espresso and the skate board  are aiming to collect at least 100 boards to send to Ethiopia Skate; a charity which aims to empower young people through skateboarding.

David Faulkner, director and head roaster at Extract, discovered the charity whilst travelling through Ethiopia sourcing coffee beans: “Ethiopia’s reputation for producing some of the world’s finest and most interesting coffees is well known, but to uncover a grassroots skateboarding movement was a real surprise.

“When I came across Ethiopia Skate and saw groups of kids all sharing a single board, I immediately thought of my three spare boards at home doing nothing.

“I’m sure many skaters are the same and that’s why we’re asking the skate community to donate a board to help share our passion for skating and the positive impact it can have on young people”, he said.

The Kickflip coffee is a limited edition espresso produced by smallholders in the high altitudes of the Gedeb region of Ethiopia. The ripe coffee cherries are pulped, washed and dried to highlight the characteristics that are associated with coffees from this region – fragrant, floral, citric and sweet.

“It’s great to combine my personal passion for both skating and coffee,” said David. “This espresso has a clean bright finish, aniseed quality and the comforting sweetness of caramelized brown sugar atop a steaming green apple crumble, and is almost as enjoyable as dropping down a half-pipe!”

Kickflip Espresso is available now and skaters can donate boards at Extract’s roastery in Bristol and Boston Tea Party coffee shops. Extract will also be co-hosting a skateboard amnesty event at Campus skate park in Bristol on 27 April. For more information please see: https://extractcoffee.co.uk/
