For centuries, women have been the keepers of herbal wisdom, carefully utilizing the power of plants for healing. Smith Teamaker pays homage to this legacy with the launch of its newest tea in the Organic Wellness Collection: Empower Mint ($14.99). Over a year in the making and released on International Women’s Day, Empower Mint was created by three female teamakers who call it “The mother of all women’s wellness teas.”

“Many women’s teas are focused on just one aspect of our system, says Sara Kaufman, Smith Teamaker’s product & innovation manager, “but this blend gently combines multiple herbs that should suit most bodies at most stages of life.”*

Empower Mint was created by Kaufman and Claire Boyer from Smith Teamaker’s Tea Lab team, alongside Smith Teamaker’s co-founder Kim DeMent. The three teamakers drew inspiration from the heritage of female herbalists and medicine women, anchoring the blend with long established traditional herbs that together support the whole of a woman’s body. With the tea’s intention of female empowerment, Smith Teamaker partnered Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest to donate funds to the impactful organization with every box sold.

“We had been wanting to develop a tea especially for women for a long time,” says Smith Teamaker’s Co-founder Kim DeMent. “This blend feels like an herbal blanket of goodness that can be enjoyed anytime of the day, any time of the month. It’s a beautiful balance to get the medicinal benefits as well as a pleasing flavor, mouthfeel and a quality of beauty that is experienced the moment you open the sachet.”

Smith’s Tea Lab team went through many rounds of blending trials to choose accompanying ingredients that would temper the medicinal flavors of these herbs and create a complex blend with a delicious mouthfeel. The functional herbs that comprise Empower Mint include Raspberry Leaf, known as one of the most beneficial herbs to support female reproductive organs; Red Clover, known to balance sex hormones and bone density; Damiana, known to stimulate digestion, increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, and enhance mood; and Nettle widely known to be high in protein, anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. The final tea includes cacao nibs (contributing a creaminess), ginger (a bit of spice), and Oregon grown peppermint (both soothing and invigorating).

As part of the partnership with Girls Inc., a portion of each Empower Mint product, as well as pots of tea sold in Smith Teamaker’s two Portland tasting rooms, will be donated to the organization that works with youth in schools in Portland, Seattle and Southwest Washington, to empower girls “to grow up healthy, educated, and independent.” Art from the program’s participants adorns complimentary postcards available in the tasting rooms all month long. Customers are encouraged to write a note to a woman who’s empowered them in their life, and Smith Teamaker will stamp and mail the postcards free of charge.
