Pumpkin spice and everything nice… https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/32721/pumpkin-spice-and-everything-nice/ https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/32721/pumpkin-spice-and-everything-nice/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2023 16:41:12 +0000 https://www.teaandcoffee.net/?post_type=blog&p=32721 With the pumpkin spice latte – aka PSL – turning 20 this year, we look back at the origin of the limited edition autumn offering that has become an iconic beverage.

The post Pumpkin spice and everything nice… appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
Pardon the nursery rhyme ‘sampling’ but for many, this season is not just ‘nice’, it is the most wonderful time of the year — pumpkin spice beverage season. Love it or hate it, the pumpkin spice latte has become a staple on coffee shop menus around the world and spurred many other pumpkin spice beverages. Fans clamor for the limited-edition autumnal flavour so much that rather than debut in the fall, pumpkin spice beverages hit coffee shops and stores in August, and the release date seems to be earlier and earlier each year. In the United States, 1 October has even been designated National Pumpkin Spice Day (1 October is also International Coffee Day).

Starbucks Coffee launched the pumpkin spice latte – aka ‘PSL’ – in 2003. According to Starbucks, following the peppermint mocha, which was introduced the winter before and was its first ‘blockbuster seasonal beverage’, the company was looking for its first autumn limited-edition beverage. Starbucks noted that when Peter Dukes, (who was heading Starbucks espresso beverages at the time) and his team asked potential customers what flavours they were likely to purchase in a written survey, chocolate and caramel beverages consistently performed the best but pumpkin scored high on ‘uniqueness’.

The beverage creation process started by first sampling pumpkin pies and sipping espresso, and then the experiments began. From there the pumpkin spice latte was born.

In the fall of 2003, Starbucks tested the PSL in about 100 stores in Washington, DC and Vancouver, Canada. The next fall, the PSL rolled out to Starbucks stores across the US and Canada. Starbucks was apparently not completely convinced the PSL would be successful and considered changing over the next few years for something new. However, Dukes and him team realised they had a hit when Facebook and Twitter arrived in 2006, and “customers began sharing their love for PSL” on social media with their family and friends; and the coffee culture was inevitably changed.

These days, PSLs are ubiquitous on coffee shop menus around the world – e.g., Dunkin’s pumpkin spice signature latte and its nutty pumpkin coffee, Peet’s Coffee’s pumpkin latte, PJ’s Coffee’s pumpkin sweet cold foam – and the offerings have been continually upgraded and expanded. Since 2015, Starbucks’ PSL pumpkin sauce has included real pumpkin puree, made from kabocha pumpkins. Pumpkin spice K-Cups and teas (loose leaf and tea bags) from leading brands are now available in grocery stores, mass retailers and online.

Of course, given the popularity of cold brew coffee, Starbucks introduced Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew a couple of years ago and many others followed suit (such as Dunkin’s pumpkin cream cold brew and Peet’s pumpkin oat foam cold brew to name just a couple). And in response to a TikTok craze last year, new to Starbucks’ fall menu this year is the Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte. Peet’s also offers a pumpkin chai, served hot or cold. (Check out our Main News section to see which brands have already launched their pumpkin spice beverage items.)

While I enjoy pumpkin spice-flavoured foods, I have never liked any pumpkin spice latte — too sweet and too filling. But I did try a cold brew version, and I admit that I quite enjoyed it because I found it to be less sweet and not as heavy as a latte.

Other autumn flavours have started appearing on coffee shop’s limited-edition menus such as apple and maple (like Costa Coffee’s maple hazel latte) but they have not yet hit the iconic status of the pumpkin spice latte. Maybe soon there will be a new beverage to challenge it, but for now fans can savour PSL season while it lasts.

The post The Sugarplum Macchiato dances into Dunkin’ this December appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
‘Twas the second day of December, when all through the land, Dunkin’ put a wonderful new drink in everyone’s hand. As visions of sugarplums start dancing in your head, Dunkin’ is bringing them now to your espresso cup instead.

Consumers may associate sugarplums with the holiday season, but have they ever actually tried one? This December, Dunkin’ is giving intrigued Americans the chance to experience the fabled holiday flavour with the launch of the new Sugarplum Macchiato.

Served hot or iced, the newest addition to the brand’s cheerful holiday espresso lineup features bright berry flavours of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and plum, accented by notes of vanilla and rounded out with a sweet sugary finish for the ultimate winter delight. The combination of Dunkin’s premium espresso, milk, and sugarplum flavour creates a whimsical, light-purple layered appearance for a beverage that is sure to start winter with a wow – and perhaps create a little festive “FOMO” as the highlight of holiday posts and photos.

According to Jill Nelson, vice president, marketing strategy at Canton, Massachusetts-based Dunkin’, “Our Sugarplum Macchiato is a colourful twist on a well-known, but perhaps mysterious-tasting, flavour of holiday lore. It’s the perfect complement to our fan-favourite holiday latte lineup and brings even more delicious cheer to the Dunkin’ menu.”

But what is your take on the Sugarplum Macchiato’s taste? As Dunkin’ provides people with perhaps their first-ever taste of sugarplum, the brand wants to hear everyone’s take on the unique drink. Dunkin’ invites America to offer an original description of the Sugarplum Macchiato’s distinct and delightful taste via a special seasonal AR lens on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook using #DunkinSugarplum. For inspiration, Dunkin’ is turning to influencers, celebrities, Dunkin’ restaurant employees, and its own culinary experts to offer their own take on the Sugarplum Macchiato, with fun videos to be spotlighted on the brand’s social channels throughout December.

Dunkin’s holiday treats also include the new Frosted Snowflake Donut. With purple icing and special snowflake sprinkles, the Frosted Snowflake Donut is the perfect purple pairing with the Sugarplum Macchiato. Some of Dunkin’s classic donuts will be wearing their holiday best as well, with seasonal snowflake sprinkles for a festive new look.

Dunkin’s seasonal treats are available beginning 2 December for a limited time only. They may be ordered in-store or via the Dunkin’ App.

The post Greenstreet Coffee selects Finca Santa Teresa as its holiday bean appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
Chris Molieri, head of small batch Greenstreet Coffee Roastery, (tucked away on Alter Street in South Philadelphia), has selected Nicaraguan Finca Santa Teresa as the roastery’s featured holiday bean this year.

Molieri said: ”With its subtle finish reminiscent of ripe raspberry, orange and candied raisin, Greenstreet’s Finca Santa Teresa, a single origin light roast bourbon bean coffee, is the perfect complement to Christmas morning pancakes and French toast, as well as after a big turkey dinner.”

Molieri selected Santa Teresa after visiting the coffee farm, tasting the bean and meeting the farmer, Jorge Luis Lagos Calix and his family. Jorge’s farm is located a four hour drive from capital city Managua in Nicaragua’s highest elevation region called Jinotega. Molieri noted: “during the holidays, it’s a good feeling to know that we’re helping Jorge and his family and employees in Nicaragua – truly wonderful people deserving our support.”

Now, as a special offer on orders of three bags or more placed at one time through 24 December, Greenstreet will give online customers free shipping, and in-roastery customers a bonus freshly brewed cup of coffee to enjoy. MSRP is for the Nicaraguan Finca Santa Teresa is USD $15.99 for a 12oz bag. It is also available in an 80oz bulk bag for cafés, restaurants, hotels, etc, for $69.99 retail.

Greenstreet is unique among coffee roasters in that it is committed to freshness. Molieri believes that time, even a short time, reduces coffee quality by oxidising the beans. Studies have shown that oxidation flattens the nuanced flavour of coffee, even causing bitterness. Greenstreet’s coffee is hand-roasted in 30-pound batches and sold within a few days.

To achieve his freshness and quality goals, Molieri believes his commitment to small batch craft roasting enables Greenstreet to have complete oversight and control of the roasting process. Every bean put into a bag is closely monitored throughout the entire process. Molieri states: “There is no computer automation here. Our final step is where every batch is tasted for perfection. This personal attention to every batch is what sets Greenstreet apart as as craft roasters.”

Greenstreet’s other coffees range from $12.99-$16.99, with a special Colombian bean available in 6oz, roasted-to-order bags for $21.99.

Peet’s Coffee has unveiled its 2020 holiday offerings that invoke notions of wintery snowcap mountains and sensational aromas of the season. This year’s lineup features the debut of two new products with a twist on holiday traditions, as well as the return of the popular Holiday Spice Latte and Peppermint Mocha. Additional holiday offerings include the arrival of the annual Holiday Blend coffee and a Small Batch Curated Subscription for home coffee brewing.

Available from 30 October 2020 to 5 January 2021, Peet’s lineup features the debut of:

 • Snowcap Mint Matcha Latte (Iced or Hot): Creamy and refreshing iced mint matcha latte topped with a lightly sweet snowcap.
 • Snowcap Peppermint Cold Brew (Iced Only): New snowcap adds a subtle sweetness to the bold, juicy peppermint Baridi cold brew.

“Our new Snowcap beverages include an airy, lightly-sweetened topping that creates a unique velvety experience reminiscent of the snowy peaks of Winter” said Patrick Main, senior R&D manager, Peet’s Coffee. “We are excited about the sensory experience our new Snowcap topping delivers. Combined with peppermint, a beloved holiday flavour, this beverage ultimately brings forth a truly delicious and unique flavour.”

Returning Peet’s favourites include:

 • Holiday Spice Latte (Iced or Hot): Hand-pulled espresso, freshly steamed milk, and an aromatic mixture of holiday baking spices that delivers cozy notes of cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg.
 • Peppermint Mocha (Iced or Hot): Hand-pulled espresso infused with rich house-made chocolate sauce and peppermint, topped with a cloud of whipped cream.
 • Dark Chocolate Orange Mocha (Iced or Hot): As part of Peet’s Members Only Menu, this feature is only available to those who have the Peet’s app and are part of the Peetnik Rewards program. Hand-pulled espresso and freshly steamed milk blended with decadent chocolate, unsweetened Dutch cocoa, and sweet citrus topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa.

2020 Holiday Blend

Delivering delight to the season, Peet’s 2020 Holiday Blend is the highly anticipated coffee Peetniks have been waiting for all year. The exciting offering pairs two Guatemalan coffees, a washed and natural Ethiopian, and a sumptuous spice-laden Sumatra, for one extraordinary blend. Each sip is reportedly complex and warmly spiced, embracing notes of candied fruit, dark chocolate, and Indonesian spices.

“Double chocolate, extra fragrant, and ultra-plush, our annual Holiday Blend is as much a celebration of the festive season as it is the diverse communities and regions it comes from,” said Doug Welsh, roastmaster, Peet’s Coffee. “Offering a fresh and flavourful cup of holiday cheer, our annual blend is a joyful gift of the season itself.”

This year, Peet’s is joining forces with La Cocina, a nonprofit that empowers female food entrepreneurs of colour to succeed in the food and restaurant industry. Demonstrating its commitment to women’s advancement, Peet’s will donate $1 for every pound of Holiday Blend and Decaf Holiday Blend sold in its coffeebars and www.peets.com to La Cocina. During Giving Week (1-7 December), the company will double their support and donate $2 for every pound of holiday blend or decaf holiday blend sold.

Available now until supplies last, Peet’s Holiday Blend can be purchased at participating Peet’s coffeebar locations and online at www.peets.com, as well as grocery stores nationwide www.peets.com/product-locator. Prices vary by channel.

Clipper Teas, the ethical tea brand owned by Wessanen UK, has launched an Organic Tea Advent Calendar designed to surprise and delight tea lovers in the run up to Christmas.

The new SKU contains 24 tea bags with 12 different flavoured teas and infusions including festive favourites such as Orange & Lemon and Liquorice & Peppermint. Each tea bag is wrapped in a numbered sleeve for the 24 days leading up to Christmas and retrieved through an envelope-style opening in the box.

The Clipper Organic Tea Advent Calendar (£4.99, 48g) is available online at clipper-teas.com, via Amazon and in UK health food trade stores from this month.

It is the first time Clipper has sold an advent tea calendar in the UK. Last year, Clipper released a similar product in Germany, which fast became one of the best-selling SKUs in the whole range that year. Now the brand is aiming to replicate this success with UK tea lovers looking for an alternative to chocolate advent calendars.

In 2019, Clipper introduced the world’s first unbleached, non-GM tea bag made with a biodegradable, plant-based material. Each tea bag in the advent calendar is made with the same promise and the whole selection is also organic.

Bryan Martins, marketing director for Clipper Teas at Wessanen UK, said: “This is a fun, healthy and affordable Christmas treat and an enjoyable way for people to try a whole range of Clipper’s organic teas and infusions. At under £5, it’s also a perfect secret Santa gift.”

Clipper Teas was the UK’s first Fairtrade tea company and through its parent company Wessanen UK is a certified B Corp brand.
