PACK EXPO International 2024 (3–6 November, Chicago, Illinois), will showcase a wide array of innovations to help brand owners minimise energy consumption, waste, and carbon footprint and address circularity.

New and expanded education and show navigation resources will help 45,000 attendees efficiently meet their sustainability objectives as they traverse more than 1.3 million square feet of floor space housing 2,700 exhibitors.

“With consumers and regulators paying more attention to sustainability, brand owners must step up their efforts to set and meet goals to increase the sustainability of their operations,” said Laura Thompson, vice president of trade shows at PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, and producer of the PACK EXPO portfolio of trade shows. “Attendees at PACK EXPO International will be able to walk away with the information they need to set and achieve sustainability goals.”

Show resources include the launch of Sustainability Central, the Sustainability Solutions Finder, the PACK EXPO Green program, The Showcase of Packaging Innovations®, and free educational sessions.

Sustainability Central in the West Hall (Booth W-21020) will explore packaging sustainability and what it means to brands. This new show floor destination will provide a look at actionable, sustainable solutions in manufacturing, materials, recovery, logistics, analytics, and design. With over 20 educational sessions, the Sustainability Central stage will deliver critical insights. On Sunday, 3 Nov at 12 CST, PMMI experts Jorge Izquierdo, vice president, market development, and Rebecca Marquez, director, custom research, will present Navigating Packaging Materials Transitions, an update on PMMI’s 2023 Packaging Compass report and the related Material Transitioning Dashboard, an on-line tool illustrating materials consumer packaged goods companies are using, what they are phasing out, and their likely replacements over the next five years.

Sustainability Central also will feature presentations from experts at Amazon, Conagra, Clorox, Dow, Merck, and the Consumer Brands Association and others, as well as opportunities to learn about the latest planet-friendly innovations, research, and best practices from Virginia Tech, University of Florida, Clemson University, AMERIPEN, and more.

Educational sessions related to sustainability also will be presented at the Reusable Packaging Learning Center (Booth LU-6737) in the Reusable Packaging Pavilion, the Innovation Stage (Booth N-4560, N-4580, and N-4585), the Processing Innovation Stage (Booth LU-7147), and Industry Speaks (Booth N-4544). Topics include technology and materials innovations, the use of recycled content and renewable materials, transformation of waste, circularity, refill/reuse options, life cycle assessment, sustainable package design, reduction in emissions, extended producer responsibility, and data collection.

At the Reusable Packaging Pavilion, members of the Reusable Packaging Association will demonstrate ways to reduce waste, cut costs, and gain supply chain efficiency. Visitors to the pavilion will also be able to explore reusable transport packaging products and services as well as learn about innovative reuse options.

Showgoers can locate sustainability resources quickly by using the Sustainability Solutions Finder kiosk located in Sustainability Central. This professionally vetted and searchable tool identifies exhibitors with environmentally friendly products and machinery. Sustainable materials and machinery suppliers and service providers also are identified by the PACK EXPO Green icon signage on the show floor. The logo also indicates which educational sessions explore sustainability topics.

Real-world examples of sustainable packaging from around the world may be found at The Showcase of Packaging Innovations® and located within the Containers and Materials Pavilion in the West Hall (Booth W-21030).

At the venue, PMMI is working with Dow, the Official Sustainability Partner and the Official Sponsor of Show Floor Recycling at PACK EXPO International, to minimise the environmental impact of the event and divert as much waste as possible from landfills. Recyclable items include paper, paperboard, and corrugated; metal cans; unbroken glass containers; 01-PET and 02-HDPE containers; and name badges (look for badge collection bins at shuttle bus areas).

PMMI also noted that McCormick Place itself has been recognised for its innovative strategies to reduce its carbon footprint and has received official acknowledgment by independent third-party organisations such as LEED, APEX, Green Seal, and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The 2nd International Coffee Convention is set to take place 17-18 October in Mannheim, Germany bringing together leading experts and enthusiasts from the global coffee industry to discuss and shape the future of coffee. Dr Vanusia Nogueira, the executive director of the International Coffee Organisation, will deliver the keynote address.

The International Coffee Convention (ICC) was established in 2023 to address the pressing issues facing the coffee industry. The inaugural ICC identified these challenges and highlighted the opportunities within them, setting the stage for actionable solutions. While there were originally no plans to hold a second ICC so soon after the first, Dr Steffen Schwarz, founder of the ICC, said the overwhelming response and the need for continuity in tackling these challenges led to the organisation of the second ICC in 2024.

The ICC 2024 program, the theme of which is ‘Coffee in Transition’, is designed to tackle pressing issues in the coffee industry. Key sessions include:
1. Future Landscape of Multiple Coffee Species: Addressing species such as Robusta, Racemosa, and Stenophylla within the context of the Nagoya Protocol.
2. Land Use and Coffee Farming Systems: Exploring deforestation policies and innovations in coffee fermentation and processing technologies.
3. Advancements in Coffee Preparation and Business: Covering the journey from roasting to creating the perfect café crème.
4. Sustainable Utilisation of Coffee By-Products: Discussing challenges and opportunities in utilising coffee by-products sustainably.
5. Coffee and Health: Examining the nutritional impacts, benefits, and substantiating health claims of coffee.

The event will also include unique cupping sessions to explore rare coffee species:
• Rare Species Cup tasting
• Liberica Cup tasting

Additionally, there will be a live research project on sensory coffee preference testing, providing attendees with hands-on experience in evaluating coffee maturity and freshness. Among the key scientific presentations, the ICC will showcase a groundbreaking study on the impact of post-roast maturation on the sensory experience of coffee, offering new insights into how aging affects coffee flavour and quality.

The Kaldi Awards, which celebrate significant advancements and research in the coffee industry, will be presented during the convention, recognising outstanding contributions in various categories such as lifetime achievement, green coffee cultivation and processing, roasting, and preparation.

The International Coffee Convention is designed to be an unparalleled gathering for ‘anyone passionate about coffee’ — from farmers and roasters to traders and researchers. By fostering collaboration and sharing cutting-edge research, the convention aims to drive the industry towards a sustainable and innovative future.

World of Coffee Copenhagen welcomed a record-breaking 12,600+ attendees from 140 countries, marking it the largest and most diverse attendance in the event’s history. The specialty coffee trade show in Europe experienced a remarkable 26% increase in attendance compared to the previous year, with 492 exhibiting companies — the highest participation ever. The event was supported by Host Sponsor BWT water+more, Platinum Sponsor Barista Attitude, Gold Sponsor Alpro and Portrait Country, Peru.

The vibrant three-day event was packed with significant activities, including the launch of the Green Coffee Connect programme and the Retail Buyers Lounge in Europe. These new features provided platforms for learning, networking, and fostering business partnerships. The Sustainable World of Coffee initiative, in collaboration with Caravela Coffee and supported by Barista Attitude, inspired positive changes within the coffee industry, says the organisation, such as planting over 6,000 trees, supporting 150+ farms, and offsetting 1,600-2,000 tons of CO₂.

Attendees also enjoyed the Best New Product Competition, Coffee Design Awards, Cupping Exchange, and two Roaster Villages and the event was highlighted by several awards programmes.

A partnership was announced between Cup of Excellence, Alliance for Coffee Excellence, and Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). This collaboration aims to set new industry standards and enhance the entire coffee ecosystem. Key initiatives include supporting the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) form, increasing visibility at CoE competitions, offering collaborative training programmes, and launching educational initiatives to advance industry skills.

World of Coffee Copenhagen also marked the next phase of the SCA Coffee Value Assessment (CVA), introducing three new cupping standards, a beta version of the extrinsic assessment, and updated supporting documents. These resources aim to integrate the CVA into daily practice, fostering a growing community of professionals dedicated to discovering value in coffee. Start using the SCA Coffee Value Assessment and its tools at sca.coffee/value-assessment.

The 2024 Best New Product Awards winners are:

 • People’s Choice: SQUEAKY – The King Eddy (Electric)
 • Commercial Coffee Preparation & Serving Equipment: Bellwether Coffee – “Bellweather Shop Roaster”
 • Consumer Coffee Preparation & Serving Equipment: Fellow – “Aiden Precision Coffee Maer”
 • Coffee Accessories: Hauck Tamper – “Vibra Tamper”
 • Open Class: Kavekalmar – “ROASTINO Manual Roaster”
 • Specialty Non-Coffee Beverage Stand alone: DRYK Brew – “DRYK Pea Barista”
 • Specialty Coffee Beverage Additive: Beyond the Bean – “Sweetbird Popcorn Syrup”

Four World Coffee Championships were held, including World Latte Art, World Coffee in Good Spirits, World Coffee Roasting, and Cezve/Ibrik Championships.

World of Coffee Copenhagen was made possible through the generous support of the 2024 Portrait Country, Peru. “We are very proud to be the Portrait Country at World of Coffee 2024, showcasing the quality of Peruvian specialty coffees to international buyers. Coffee has become one of Peru’s traditional agricultural export products, with exports totaling USD 829 million in 2023. This participation represents a great opportunity for our producers,” said Claricia Tirado, executive president of PROMPERÚ. The event was also supported by Host Sponsor BWT water+more, Platinum Sponsor Barista Attitude, and Gold Sponsor Alpro.

I always enjoy attending the annual Fancy Food Show in New York City because it is the one trade show where I do not feel like a ‘stalker’…Before calling the authorities, let me explain. Whether I attend a conference, convention or trade show, I am constantly staring (squinting these days) at attendees to try to read their badges, and often following them – or chasing them – down aisles if it is an executive from a coffee or tea company with whom I would really like to speak. At the Fancy Food Show, food and beverage companies are the exhibitors so rather than utilising my chase skills, I am able to speak with them at their booths, which is refreshing, more civilised, and frankly a lot less exhausting!

Companies are often introducing new products or brands or displaying their recent launches at the Fancy Food Show (which took place between 23-25 June this year), so it is also the perfect opportunity to sample new coffee and tea SKUs. Most companies exhibiting at the show look to gain or expand their retail distribution in the United States. Whittard, for example, is a well-known and highly regarded English tea brand –established in 1886 – but it began to expand its presence in the US only recently so the show is an ideal place to meet retailers. Some companies exhibit hoping to find distributors to launch their products in US stores. For example, Shun Tea, from Japan, which was promoting its Camellia sinensis stem-based matcha called ‘bowcha’ and Brewix from India, which offers black, green and herbal and botanical teas in plastic-free, sugarcane-based packaging, were both hoping to find distributors to help bring their products in the US market.

On the coffee side, licensed brands were strong with many of the established companies (those already available at retail but looking to expand their distribution). White Coffee has long offered an array of licensed brands in its coffee assortment such as Harry & David, Entenmann’s, Jim Bean, Bailey’s and Peanuts. Two of its newest licensed ground coffee products are M&M’s and Snickers branded coffee, which join Twix and Dove.

Two Rivers Coffee from New Jersey also offers several licensed coffee products including ice cream brands Friendly’s and Cold Stone Creamery. Its newest item is Kellogg’s Eggo-branded coffee. According to Sam Blaney, vice president of sales and marketing, this is the first time Kellogg’s has licensed the Eggo name to another F&B product. Flavours for the single-serve coffee line include vanilla, maple syrup, cinnamon toast, chocolate chip and blueberry. When I asked who they are targeting with the Eggo coffee line, Blaney said it’s a nostalgia brand so he believes the line will appeal to anyone who grew up eating Eggo waffles, and of course, Gen Z, because that demo tends to enjoy sweet flavours.

New English Teas Ltd has also specialised in licensed products such as Beatrix Potter and tea sporting the Royals such as Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles, and Prince William and Princess Kate (technically, it may be Kate, the Princess of Wales). At the Fancy Food Show, New English Teas was highlighting its new Harry Potter line, which ranged from small decorative tins to beautiful large canisters and included a variety of flavours in both loose leaf tea and tea bags.

Unsurprisingly, the most innovation was in the ready-to-drink segment. Boba/bubble tea was ubiquitous, offering a variety of flavours (mango, passionfruit green tea; peach oolong tea; mixed berry hibiscus, etc.) including new tapioca and juice-based boba flavours, and instant bubble tea and instant popping boba kits. There were myriad companies offering new coffee and RTD drinks from cold brewed, to lightly sweetened and unsweetened, those with plant-based additives, and of course, new flavours, such as a lavender and maple oat milk latte from Dripdash, but the real innovation was in functional RTD coffee and tea.

Frujava won the Sofi Gold Award from the Specialty Food Association in the Energy Drink Waters & Functional Beverages category for its coffee bean and green coffee extract-based Cherry Vanilla Energy Drink. Frujava is targeting those consumers who would like the ‘energy’ benefits that energy drinks provide – each can contains 80mg of caffeine – but naturally, as the caffeine is derived from coffee. The drink tasted more like a semi-sparkling juice so it will appeal to those who may not want a soda but do want caffeine yet not necessarily a cup of coffee or a typical energy drink, both of which have much higher levels of caffeine.

Monatea, from South Africa – which was also looking for a distributor – was promoting its cold-brew sparkling rooibos drink (a subtle sparkling tea) that is caffeine-free, organic, has no sugar and only one calorie in distinct flavours such as ginger/peach/African olive leaf, sage/lime/Cape Mint, and hibiscus/berry/buchu. For those who prefer a sweetened beverage, Monatea also offers lightly sweetened versions. Many of the ingredients are native to only the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa, which adds to the uniqueness and originality of the drinks.

Colombini

Colombini logo

ANGEL, THE GREAT LITTLE ONE.

As per our industrial grinders, ANGEL is a high-tech product, equipped with discs in tungsten carbide (hardness: 1300 Vickers) and very high precision adjustment with resolution of 2 microns and digital display of discs position. Due to its solidity and high precision, it can produce batches of ground coffee in continuous cycle, with a capacity of 90-120 kg/h. The duration of the discs is in order of 40-80 tons, depending on fineness of ground coffee.

ANGEL can also grind Turkish coffee, with cardamom too; in this case, the capacity is around 50 Kg/h.

It is very useful for laboratories, in order to repeat very similar results of Colombini’s industrial grinders.

All the ANGELs are equipped with a cooling system by ventilation and inverter to adjust the RPM of the discs.

Five different versions can be provided and the prices are all similar.

The LAB and ST.V versions are equipped with a manual device that ensures, by means of a simple hand gesture, that the discharge duct remains cleaned inside every time a ground coffee package is filled.

The RTM.V and the RTM.V4 are equipped with an automatic cleaning system of the exhaust duct, very helpful when working in continuous cycle for several minutes/hours.

World of Coffee is set to take place from 27 – 29 June 2024, welcoming over 400 exhibitors and more than 10,000 attendees to the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. Alongside the return of choice show features such as Best New Product, recognising new products judged on their quality and value to the specialty coffee and tea industry, and Coffee Design Awards, celebrating great design as an important function in distinguishing specialty coffee; this year, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is introducing new features.

Retail Buyers Lounge:

For the first time, World of Coffee presents the Retail Buyers Lounge, a dedicated space tailored for coffee professionals with buying power in retail operations. This exclusive area, open to select attendees, offers an ideal environment for skill-sharing, learning, and networking among global coffee retail industry experts. The Retail Buyers Lounge provides a comfortable retreat off the show floor, where participants can catch up on emails, connect over a cup of coffee, and learn about the latest trends impacting the industry.

In addition to a relaxing space, the Retail Buyers Lounge will host a series of short talks and panel discussions featuring industry experts. These sessions are designed to offer invaluable access and insights, empowering retail buyers to make informed decisions and stay competitive in the fast-evolving coffee market.

Green Coffee Connect:

Green Coffee Connect is another exciting addition to World of Coffee Copenhagen 2024. This event is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for the green coffee industry, offering participants a dynamic platform for learning and networking.

At Green Coffee Connect, attendees can engage in Green Coffee Conversations, where leading industry experts share their insights and expertise. Whether you’re a seasoned green coffee trader or new to this vibrant sector, Green Coffee Connect offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and forge valuable connections. Participation in Green Coffee Connect is completely free, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to join us on this journey of growth and collaboration.

Sustainable World of Coffee:

In Copenhagen, SCA is combining forces to take decisive action in supporting producers facing environmental challenges – directing financial support to coffee farmers in Latin America, who will plant native trees that contribute to soil health, reduce erosion, and sequester carbon. These initiatives are in partnership with Caravela Coffee, a Latin America green coffee exporter and importer and recognised leader in green coffee sustainability, and Barista Attitude. These organisations support the SCA Sustainable Specialty Coffee Agenda and are working together to create an innovative offset strategy for SCA’s trade shows, with impact closer to coffee farms and landscapes, and as an avenue for promoting equitable value distribution across the coffee supply chain.

Other sustainability activities at the event include a ceremony and panel discussion recognising the 2024 Sustainability Award Winners in the For-Profit and Non-Profit category, happening Thursday 27 June.

In addition to the new features on the show floor, there will be four World Coffee Championships taking place at World of Coffee. The 2024 World Latte Art Championship (WLAC), World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (WCIGS), World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC) and the Cezve/Ibrik Championship, showcasing the world’s top coffee professionals as they compete for the title of World Champion.

World of Coffee Copenhagen is made possible through the support of its 2024 Portrait Country, Peru. “We are very proud to be the Portrait Country at the World of Coffee 2024, which will allow us to showcase the quality of Peruvian specialty coffees to international buyers. Coffee has become one of Peru’s traditional agricultural export products, with its main markets in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2023 alone, coffee exports totaled USD 829 million. Therefore, Peru’s participation in this fair represents a great opportunity for our producers to achieve greater commercial contacts and to finalise future coffee shipments,” said Claricia Tirado, executive president of PROMPERÚ.

Join us in Copenhagen from 27 – 29 June 2024, for three days of innovation, networking, and industry leadership within specialty coffee. With the addition of exciting new show features, World of Coffee Copenhagen 2024 promises to be an essential event for coffee professionals looking to network, learn, and lead in the industry.

The next edition of the Singapore National Coffee Championship (SNCC) returns next month from 26 to 28 June 2024 at Speciality Coffee & Tea Asia (SCTA) held at Sands Expo & Convention Centre Singapore (Halls D, E and F). SCTA is now part of the inaugural SIGEP Asia, the first-ever Asian edition of the world’s leading Italian international artisan gelato, pastry, bakery and coffee trade show SIGEP, that is expected to host up to 10,000 trade visitors and buyers, and over 250 exhibitors and brands from 20 countries and regions.

Organised by IEG Asia, SIGEP Asia will be held alongside the 5th edition of Restaurant Asia – co-organised with the Restaurant Association of Singapore (RAS), and co-located with IEG Asia’s recently acquired series of food and beverage (F&B) trade shows Speciality Food & Drinks Asia (SFDA), Speciality Coffee & Tea Asia (SCTA) and Food2Go.

The SNCC is the flagship competitive event staged by the Singapore Coffee Association that raises the profile of the barista profession, promotes best practices in coffee preparation, and encourages local baristas to continually improve their craft. With SIGEP Asia and SCTA as the platform for this edition of SNCC, participants, supporters and coffee enthusiasts alike will be immersed into all aspects of coffee production – from sourcing and brewing – and be a part of the growing competitive coffee scene.

“Coffee competitions like the Singapore National Coffee Championship are incredibly important as they push the boundaries of coffee excellence and inspire a new generation of passionate baristas. This aligns perfectly with SIGEP’s mission of creating the ‘dolce experience’ and celebrating the artistry behind the beverages we love. We’re thrilled to partner with the Singapore Coffee Association, a stalwart of Singapore’s coffee industry since the 1950s, at the inaugural edition of SIGEP Asia and showcase Singapore’s vibrant coffee scene to the world,” said Ilaria Cicero, chief executive officer of IEG Asia and organiser of the events.

Four competition titles

This edition of the SNCC comprises four competitions and a total of 60 participants are expected to participate.

The Singapore National Barista Championship, presented by Santino, will see Singapore’s top baristas come together to showcase their coffee-making talent – judged based on taste, presentation and technical skills – with the National Champion going on to represent Singapore at the World Barista Championship 2025.

The Singapore National Brewers Cup, presented by TIMEMORE, will showcase the best talents in brewing filtered coffee by hand, promoting manual coffee brewing and service excellence. The Brewers Cup Champion will represent Singapore at the World Brewers Cup 2025.

The Singapore National Latte Art Championship brings out the artistic side of coffee making – specifically the skill of creating designs with milk foam atop a latte. The participant with the most artistic pouring methods and designs will represent Singapore in the annual World Latte Art Championships 2025.

The Singapore Cup Tasters Championship seeks to identify professional coffee cuppers who demonstrate speed, skill and accuracy in distinguishing the taste differences in specialty coffees. The victor will represent Singapore at the annual World Cup Tasters Championships 2025.

Springboard for F&B excellence and entrepreneurship

The SNCC has been a springboard for many aspiring baristas, many of which have gone on to make their mark in the F&B industry both in Singapore and abroad. For example, Jervis Tan, champion of the Singapore Latte Art Championship 2023 and owner of Oaks Coffee Co, clinched 6th place at the World Latte Art Championship 2023 in Taipei. Jervis has been a five-time Singapore Latte Art Champion and two-time finalist of the World Latte Art Championship.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting the prestigious Singapore National Coffee Championships at SIGEP Asia this year, under the Speciality Coffee & Tea Asia series. This move to a much larger platform reflects the growing importance and vibrancy of Singapore’s coffee scene. SIGEP Asia offers the perfect stage for talented baristas to showcase their skills, and we welcome enthusiasts and industry leaders alike to join us on this journey to witness the incredible talent and creativity within the coffee industry,” said Victor Mah, president of the Singapore Coffee Association.

Key presenters and sponsors

SNCC is well supported by leading industry sponsors, including Santino as key presenter for Singapore National Barista Championship and TIMEMORE as key presenter for the Singapore National Brewers Cup. Other sponsors include Bettr Barista, Victoria Arduino distributed by Santino, F&N Foods, Vitasoy, DaVinci Gourmet, Starbucks, Bero Coffee Singapore, GFS Innovation, Claytan® Fine China (Tableware), Hario, BÜCHI, BUNN and Scotsman Industries.

Key happenings at SIGEP Asia

The inaugural SIGEP Asia will serve as a beacon for the entire F&B and Hotel, Restaurant, and Catering (HoReCa) industries by streamlining industry trends and fostering strategic business connections. The event will bring together leading European and Asian industry players to showcase the latest F&B products and foodservice technologies, and host other fringe events such as the RAS Leadership Symposium and seminars, masterclasses and tasting sessions.

Visitors can look forward to an impressive lineup of exhibitors and brands from 30 countries, spanning from Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy to Japan and beyond. These include Boncafé International, Dasher, Evoca, Glyph Supply Co, Huggs Coffee, MHW-3Bomber, The Coffee Folks and Zero Hero, among many others.

The world’s premier competitive coffee event — the World Barista Championship — is coming to Milan, Italy, taking place at HostMilano, 17-21 October 2025. HostMilano, held at Fiera Milano (Rho), is the global epicenter for the Horeca and Food Service industry, offering an unparalleled platform for innovation, networking, and showcasing the latest trends in hospitality.

The World Barista Championship (WBC) returns to Milan after last being hosted at HostMilano in 2021. The WBC focuses on promoting excellence in coffee and advancing the barista profession, with baristas demonstrating their expertise in crafting innovative espresso-based drinks across the espresso, milk, and signature beverage courses. Each 15 minute performance is evaluated by Certified Judges on a range of technical and sensory attributes, and the cutting-edge approaches and tools used on the WBC stage have extensive and enduring impacts on the industry. This highly competitive championship attracts the finest baristas from more than 50 Competition Bodies who will present their skills, creativity, and coffee mastery in a bid to claim the coveted title of World Barista Champion. The WBC is one of seven World Coffee Championships — annual skills-based competitions produced by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), and hosted at some of the most important global coffee trade shows.

“We are proud and delighted to welcome the SCA to Host 2025.”, said Simona Greco, Fiera Milano SpA owned exhibitions director. “This important partnership consolidates HostMilano as a global reference for the entire coffee world and testifies to Milan’s role as one of the great coffee capitals of the world. The World Barista Championship, the most prestigious among the World Coffee Championships, will bring many of the world’s top baristas to the exhibition, attracting new target audiences of coffee lovers among hospitality professionals, and providing an opportunity to preview the most exciting new trends. We look forward to working with the SCA to outline a calendar of events that is sure to be unparalleled.”

“Given it’s scale and importance, HostMilano is the perfect location to hold the World Barista Championship,” said Yannis Apostolopoulos, CEO of the SCA. “The Fiera Milano team’s commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with our mission to elevate the barista profession and showcase the finest talents on a global stage. As we gather in this iconic city, we not only celebrate the art of coffee-making but also pay homage to the timeless tradition that continues to inspire coffee lovers worldwide.”

Since the groundbreaking introduction of caffè espresso at the 1906 Milan International World’s Fair, the city has remained a beacon of coffee craftsmanship and innovation, earning its status as the Espresso Capital of the world. Embracing Milan’s storied coffee culture, the 2025 World Barista Championship will serve as a grand celebration of the beverage that unites coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

But that undesirable stigma is starting to way as farmers are producing higher quality Robusta coffees, and roasters are giving it a second chance.

The 2024 Specialty Coffee Expo ended on Sunday and this year’s event had many ‘firsts’. For example, it was the first time the expo, organised annually by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), was held in Chicago (taking place 12-14 April). More than 17,000 coffee and tea professionals – from 85 countries – attended the show, a 23% increase from 2019 — the previous largest SCA Expo. There were 602 exhibitors this year, the most to ever participate in the Expo, per the SCA.

The 2024 Specialty Coffee Expo also debuted the Green Coffee Connect programme, which provided interactive programming for anyone selling or buying green coffee, and the Retail Buyers Lounge, which offered coffee retail buyers an area to network, conduct meetings, and cultivate potential business partnerships with exhibitors.

The Specialty Coffee Expo always offers a dynamic roster of lectures and workshops, and this year was no different. However, I was, perhaps, most impressed by the session on Robusta. Although specialty Robusta cuppings have taken place at the SCA Expo, as well as other lectures, I believe ‘Exploring Quality Focused Robusta: A Conversation with Producers and Roasters’ was the first panel discussion focused on Robusta featuring leading specialty coffee roasters.

Moderated by David Pohl of Pohl Consulting, panellists included: Shaun Puklavitz, coffee sourcing and relationship manager, Blue Bottle Coffee; Amaris Gutierrez-Ray, senior director of coffee and roasting, Joe Coffee/founder of the Women in Coffee Project; Sahra Nguyen, founder and CEO Nguyen Coffee Supply (a specialty Robusta coffee roaster); Lucus Venturim, a fifth generation coffee producer from Espirito Santo, Brazil and a Q processing/Robusta instructor; Luis Carlos Sotillo, head of quality control and experimental processing at the Kiva Estate in Cocie, Panama; and Nafessa Esmail, and conservationist and coffee producer from the Asisi Estate in Uganda.

The panellists agreed that nature has played a huge role in the growth of Robusta, but there is untapped potential.

“Most people never gave Robusta a second thought and would treat it poorly,” said Luis Carlos Sotillo, “but there is a great opportunity to innovate.”

Amaris Gutierrez-Ray said Joe Coffee first started to experiment with Robusta in 2018 when a wholesale customer requested a “nostalgic, traditional Roman style expresso.” She explained that when roasting to a dark level, characteristics of the coffee are removed, Robusta worked best because it didn’t lose those qualities. “We need to get over this prejudice with Robusta because it’s old.”

Sahra Nguyen has been championing Robusta coffee since she founded Nguyen Coffee Supply in 2018. The brand’s products are 100% Robusta and clearly labelled as such from the beginning. T&CTJ’s associate editor, Kathryn Brand, spoke with Nguyen for her feature, “Redefined Prospects for Robusta” (T&CTJ’s January/February 2024 issue), and when discussing the long-standing stigma surrounding Robusta, said, “there’s been an entire community in the coffee world that has been told you don’t deserve investment. You don’t deserve care. You don’t deserve to improve or advance your livelihoods, and that’s what we are ultimately trying to lift when we talk about Robusta.”

Nguyen is even pioneering a Robusta Pledge, which encourages producers, importers, roasters, coffee shops, etc., to sign a commitment to advance opportunities for Robusta farming communities, and for a fair and transparent Robusta market.

Even World Coffee Research, which has been actively researching, studying and experimenting to preserve the Arabica plant by combatting threats against it (climate change, disease, pest infestation), has acknowledged Robusta by providing similar resources to its Arabica offerings. For example, in 2023, WCR introduced its Robusta Variety Catalogue along with other resources such as a Grafting Manual and Nursery videos.

I remember cupping my first ‘specialty Robustas’ at a pre-Covid SCA Expo (in Seattle I believe). In 2022, while attending International Coffee Week in Brazil, I cupped some truly lovely specialty Robustas, predominantly from the Amazon region. These Robustas were all processed with the care, concern and attention to detail that is given to Arabica, and the effort was manifested in the taste. With Arabica continually under threat, the coffee industry does need to give Robusta ‘a second look’, as well as Coffea liberica and Coffea stynophylla (T&CTJs January/February issue, “Climate Proof Coffee Species Recultivated in Sierra Leone”).

“We are still learning the potential for quality Robusta,” said Blue Bottle’s Shaun Puklavitz. “As we continue to find those coffees, we will [incorporate them into our product line].”

Approximately 17,000 coffee and tea professionals from over 85 countries gathered for the first time in Chicago, IL, USA for the thirty-fifth annual Specialty Coffee Expo, North America’s largest coffee trade show and host of the World Coffee Championships. The Expo owned and produced by the Specialty Coffee Association, saw a 23% increase in attendance from the previous largest show which took place in 2019, and an exhibit hall featuring 602 companies, the most to ever participate in the history of the event.

Diamond Sponsor Sanremo Coffee Machines, Platinum Sponsor Pacific Foods Barista Series and the Portrait Country Guatemalan Coffees were instrumental in offering a dynamic three-day event where attendees had access to new products and equipment, an inspiring and motivating education programme with over 50 lectures, scientific poster sessions, workshops, a Cupping Exchange, and several networking events.

Specialty Coffee Expo offered two new features areas. The Green Coffee Connect programme, sponsored by Barista Attitude, provided interactive programming for anyone selling or buying green coffee. In addition, the coffee industry retail buyers had an opportunity to gain access to the Retail Buyers Lounge designed to provide a dynamic opportunity for retail buyers to network, conduct meetings, and explore potential business partnerships with exhibitors.

The new Sustainable Expo, held in partnership with Caravela Coffee, sponsored by Pacific Foods Barista Series, and Barista Attitude inspired positive change within the coffee industry including planting 6,000+ trees, supporting 150+ farms, and offsetting 1,600-2,000 tons co2.

Attendees also enjoyed several highly anticipated and long-standing interactive features including the Best New Product Competition, Coffee Design Awards, Cupping Exchange, and Roaster Village. There were several awards programmes held during the Specialty Coffee Expo.

The World Coffee Championships were held in the US for the first time since 2019, with the World Brewers Cup (WBrC) and World Cup Tasters Championship (WCTC) taking place at the Specialty Coffee Expo. The WBrC is a showcase of the artistry and skill behind hand-brewed filter coffee, while the WCTC celebrates cuppers who demonstrate speed, accuracy, and expertise in distinguishing taste differences in specialty coffees — with results revealed right in front of massive crowds. Both events are annual events that are the culmination of local and regional qualifiers, hosted by sanctioned Competition Bodies around the globe.

Coffee equipment maker, avercasso, has announced its participation at the 2024 Specialty Coffee Expo, which will be held on 12-14 April in Chicago at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center (Booth 2452). It will present its flagship product, the CS One, the world’s first commercialised AI green coffee bean sorter with an accuracy rate of 99% in selecting quality beans, effectively liberating roasters from the tiresome, error-prone process of bean sorting.

In the specialty coffee industry, the quality of a cup of coffee is determined by the quality of the beans, with a single defective bean capable of ruining an entire roast. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) defines primary and secondary defective beans, including broken beans, beans with insect or fungal damage, black beans, and those contaminated with foreign matter. Manual sorting is incredibly time consuming and inefficient. Sorting by colour can often overlook smaller defects. The CS One solves these common problems by deploying AI to ensure accuracy and reduce time and labour while eliminating all SCA-classified defective beans. Coffee roasters will have far more freedom for tasks that require a human touch, like crafting exquisite blends and attending to customer needs.

The usually hours-long task of sorting green beans is now boiled down into two easy steps: filling the bean hopper with green coffee beans, then initiating the sorting process via the touch panel. Upon activation, green coffee beans drop through a passageway, passing through the AI-powered cameras with a 4K high resolution lens and a shutter speed of 1/16000 second, identifying good and defective beans based on the selected process method. Compressed air removes unwanted beans into a separate receptacle. This fully automates the burdensome process of green coffee bean sorting — leaving roasters more time to do other important tasks.

avercasso created a machine that blends seamlessly into any type of coffee shop, coming in 3 carefully colours — Bronze Gold, Champagne Gold, and Rose Gold. avercasso now also allows customers to choose a customised color for the machine.u

Colombini Srl (logo and image)

Degassing system® by BMM/Colombini

Since 2017, Colombini has been distributing the Degassing system®, produced by BMM Technology, the first to use high vacuum technology to accelerate degassing and the only one capable of significantly reducing energy consumption and nitrogen requirements throughout the process.

Coffee degassing

Starting with roasting, coffee begins to release carbon dioxide from roasting, requiring a degassing process. However, “natural” degassing is now unsuitable for the coffee industry: it takes too long, is influenced by climatic and environmental variables, as well as the different characteristics of the blends, and increases the risk of product contact with oxygen, resulting in oxidation and loss of quality.

Nowadays, it is therefore necessary to force and carefully control the process at every stage, while improving it where possible.

Made in Italy innovation and research

The main innovation introduced by the Degassing system® was to use high vacuum, with very high negative pressures down to -800mbar alternating with over pressure cycles with nitrogen injection (up to +300mbar). The right combination of these two phases accelerates the degassing process, and reduces time spent by up to 40%.

High vacuum, high efficiency, highest quality

This solution provides numerous advantages:

 • Minimising the need for nitrogen for transport and storage of the ground material while awaiting packaging, which can be done in vacuum or under pressure, resulting in considerable cost savings;
 • No moving mechanical parts during transport, reducing energy costs and eliminating maintenance and repair costs;
 • Zero risk of product oxidation;
 • Unaltered particle size distribution of the ground coffee throughout the process due to the transport of the ground coffee in the semi-dense phase.

Unrivalled energy and cost savings

Data collected from active plants shows the use of high vacuum alternating with high pressure cycles can reduce degassing times by up to 40%, and nitrogen consumption is up to 10 times lower than average, minimised both for transport and storage and during the degassing cycle, due to short total process times.

All this translates into financial savings of tens of thousands of euros per year.

Unparalleled degassing

The Degassing system®, available in different sizes and adaptable to every production requirement and packaging system, has for several years remained the only one on the market capable of reducing degassing times, significantly reducing costs and energy and nitrogen consumption, while always ensuring the high quality of the ground product.

The post World Tea Expo’s strength is its educational component appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
Every conference, convention and exhibition have a ‘sweet spot’, and for World Tea Expo, it is the education component. World Tea Expo 2024 just concluded (18-20 March), and this year’s edition – held in Las Vegas again – had one of the strongest workshop and education segments to date. The sessions/lectures were more comprehensive and there was a broader selection of speakers.

The workshops and education sessions began with the all-day Tea Business Incubator on 18 March (a Tea Primer for true beginners was held on the 17th), which is for anyone interested in starting a tea business or who wants more insights into the tea industry. Jeff Fuchs, founder, Puerh Procurer, opened the conference and trade show component on the 19th with a keynote speech that discussed the history of tea, its evolution through time and cultures, and current challenges facing the tea industry. Concurrent sessions included Promotion of Tea: A Global Perspective, Clone Wars: Ten Tea Cultivars You Should Know, Driving Data Purity Through Traceability, Assamica Producers’ Collaboration, How to Navigate and Profit with Tea in E-Commerce, Essential Insights for Success in the Ready to Drink Market, Adapting to Adaptogens, and Flavoring 101: Exploring its Place in the Tea Industry. Panel discussions included Conscious Commerce: Empowering Customers Through Responsible Sourcing, Identifying Issues in Sustainability & Traceability in Tea, and Implementing Sustainability & Traceability in Tea.

Participation in the various lectures was high. I attended two of the panel discussions on sustainability, and both had large audiences who were actively engaged, taking notes, and asking questions — with the majority being first-time attendees. When asked what sustainability in tea means by one new participant, Shabnam Webber, president of the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada, noting that the tea industry is 5,000 years old, summed it up nicely saying, “We are all stewards passing through the tea industry and stewardship requires you to care about tea in order to pass it on to the next generation.”

Most education session participants with whom I spoke, found this year’s roster to be some of the strongest WTE has offered to date, noting there were diverse in content, valuable, and beneficial.

The exhibition component, which had a strong number of exhibitors and attendees, remains the weaker segment of WTE. There was a lot of turnover in terms of exhibitors from the 2023 show to this year’s show, with only a handful being repeats. There was a large pavilion of producers from China, as well as producers from Japan, India, Nepal, Vietnam and Sri Lanka (including the Sri Lanka Tea Board), among others. There were also multiple accessory exhibitors, that is, those looking to sell teapots, teaware, loose leaf tea strainers, travel mugs, etc. Brands (some of which also wholesale/private label) included SerendipiTea, Harney & Sons, Wild Orchard and Moosa, a new herbal/botanical brand, which is marketing dried fruits, herbs and spices from the Andes. The blends are placed in cups/mugs and then water is added, and rather than removing the items after steeping, the fruits, herbs and spices are designed to be eaten.

Some have said this will be their last year exhibiting – but will attend as a visitor next year – as there is no ROI given the expense of exhibiting. “The show is not generating enough potential new business for us and the leads we do have are not strong.” Multiple exhibitors echoed that sentiment. One new exhibitor, selling tea shop accessories, decided to exhibit because she was told there would be a lot of tea shop owners attending. By the second day, she shared that there had been little interest in her products but said they “were having fun.” Other exhibitors said they have typically attended WTE to connect with their customers in person, but most are no longer attending the expo.

World Tea Expo was again co-located with the Bar & Restaurant Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. While the co-location offers increased foot traffic, energy and excitement, all exhibitors I spoke with said the joint show has not provided any benefit to them as there has been no interest from Bar & Restaurant Show attendees in tea for their businesses. In fact, the presence of the Bar & Restaurant Show negatively impacted WTE’s education segment this year as it ‘took over WTE’s space.’ That is, WTE participants interested in the lectures, after picking up their badges in the front of the South Hall, rather than going to the second floor, which has been the standard for many years, had to exit the building in the front where they had entered, go to the side of the South Hall to catch a golf cart to take them to the back of the building. The signage was not clear so the process was confusing, and honestly, convoluted. To walk the exhibition floor when it opened at 12pm, attendees could catch the golf cart back to the front or walk from the back of the hall.

Exhibitors and attendees (myself included) agree that where World Tea Expo really shines, its strength, are the workshops and education sessions/lectures. The tea industry needs WTE to not only survive, but to also grow and flourish, as it is, for the most part, the only B2B tea event in North America. Hopefully, as the show continues to evolve post-pandemic and under the ownership of Questex, a ‘happy medium’ can be found where both attendees and exhibitors can benefit.

The show floor will feature hundreds of solutions that address the trends and challenges driving over 40 vertical markets, including food and beverage, life sciences, pharmaceutical, and medical device, cosmetics and personal care, industrial and household chemical, and many others.

Previous Pack Expo East attendees attest to the comprehensive solutions, educational opportunities, and networking found on the show floor.

“Pack Expo East makes it so much easier to connect in person and see the machinery that you are interested in investing in. There is such a wide range of exhibitors here serving almost all industries I can think of that you are bound to find the solution you are looking for. The educational opportunities available are an amazing bonus to an already irreplaceable show,” said Jesse Gracey, production equipment manager, Allen Distribution.

“Pack Expo East has a lot to offer. I wanted to find flow wrap and bagging machines for my business but there was so much more that I discovered that I didn’t realize I could potentially use in my facility. This has definitely been an invaluable networking experience,” said Patricia Verderame, owner, Maven Foods.

“As a new business owner, I needed innovations that can help streamline my production. It was hard to see machinery and connect with professionals online, so I decided to come to Pack Expo East. Initially, I came to find automated shrink wrap equipment but what I found was so much more,” said Karen Armstrong, owner and president, LCI Paper Co.

The show also will feature the Reusable Packaging Pavilion, sponsored by the Reusable Packaging Association (RPA), presenting sustainable packaging solutions to help reduce waste, cut costs, and gain supply chain efficiency. The Association Partner Pavilion will house leading associations dedicated to advancing the packaging and processing industry and offering significant resources, insights, and expertise in one central location. Participating associations include the RPA, Institute of Packaging Professionals, Contract Packaging Association, Flexible Packaging Association, OMAC – Organization for Machine Automation and Control, and the Foundation for Supply Chain Solutions (F4SS) with more being added.

Free educational opportunities are abundant at this year’s show, including new and popular show features. New to Pack Expo East is Industry Speaks (Booth 1653), where experts from the Pack Expo Partner Program, covering multiple industry verticals, will address hot topics and industry trends. In the center of the action, the Innovation Stage (Booth 1153) offers opportunities for professional enrichment where exhibitors present free, 30-minute seminars throughout the day. Attendees can learn about breakthrough technologies, innovative applications, and proven approaches from the experts themselves.

Registered attendees can look forward to many networking opportunities after the show floor closes for the day. The Pack Expo East “A Taste of Philly” opening reception on Monday 18 March, kicks things off with some of the best small bites and beverages the city has to offer. The Packaging & Processing Women’s Leadership Network (PPWLN) networking reception, sponsored by ID Technology and Morrison Container Handling Solutions, will take place on Tuesday 19 March. Emerging professionals in packaging and processing can unwind with their peers at the Young Professionals Network’s (YPN) free networking reception. Learn more about the industry and how to get involved with YPN on Monday 18 March, at SPIN Philadelphia.

Attendees can plan their visit before the show by utilising the My Show Planner feature to identify and map out exhibitors to visit, search for educational sessions, and more. The Pack Expo East show app will be available in mid-February and can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store to help navigate the show floor and easily locate exhibitors while at the show.

Just a drive or train trip away for most of the East Coast, no other regional event will offer such a wide range of state-of-the-art packaging and processing solutions as Pack Expo East. For more information and to register, visit packexpoeast.com.

The Specialty Coffee Association has announced the finalists for the 2024 Sustainability Awards, recognising excellence in sustainability across the industry.

The 2024 Sustainability Awards are a way to celebrate for-profit and non-profit companies that showcase innovation, collaboration, and positive impact across the entire coffee value chain.

The companies, organisations, projects, and people receiving these awards have not only dedicated themselves to confronting the challenges facing the specialty coffee industry—from climate change to gender inequality—but also to collaborating across geographies, cultures, and value chain roles, and to sharing the lessons they have learned for the benefit of the entire coffee sector.

A committee comprised of SCA staff has selected the finalists in each award category after receiving an overwhelming amount of submissions. Previous SCA Sustainability Award winners will now help select the winner in each category. Winners will be announced on SCA channels in late-March 2024, and recognised at Specialty Coffee Expo in April and World of Coffee Copenhagen this June.

The third edition of the World of Coffee 2024 exhibition will run from 21 – 23 January 2024, at Dubai World Trade Centre, and it will witness the participation of 1,650 companies and brands from across 51 countries in its third edition.

The three-day event, which is held in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association, will feature coffee companies and brands from countries, including the US, Germany, Canada, Slovakia, Portugal, Ireland, Kuwait, Norway, Taiwan, Thailand, Pakistan, Iran, and Australia, among many others. There are seven national pavilions participating, which is double the number from the previous edition, with a strong presence from India, Myanmar, Rwanda, Uganda, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and El Salvador.

Khalid Al Hammadi, senior vice president of DXB LIVE, commented, “We take great pride in gathering numerous nations, businesses, brands, experts, and specialists in the coffee industry at this exhibition. We are confident that this event will serve as a significant opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their innovative products, services, and pioneering projects in this dynamic industry. Additionally, it will also provide a productive forum for interaction between exhibitors and visitors from various parts of the globe to exchange valuable insights, expertise, and innovations in the coffee sector. By bringing together industry players, pioneers, influencers, and senior employees under one roof, we are committed to developing the exhibition and strengthening its reputation. We are on constant pursuits to enhance its key role as an active and influential player in the development of the coffee sector locally, regionally, and globally.”

The World of Coffee 2024 has signed a strategic partnership agreement with DMCC – Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, the world’s flagship free zone and Government of Dubai Authority on commodities trade and enterprise – which, through its world-class facilities at DMCC Coffee Centre, provides a wide range of services for the entire coffee value chain, including temperature-controlled storage, value-add and commercial space, inbound/outbound logistics support, warehousing, roasting, packaging and distribution services. DMCC Coffee Centre will set up a dedicated Farmers Pavilion at the exhibition to provide farmers from different coffee-producing nations and regions with the opportunity to showcase and sell green coffee beans. The pavilion will serve to assist farmers in enhancing their presence in the global coffee market, in addition to allowing visitors to taste, choose and learn about coffee beans and their sources. Farmers and organisations from Rwanda, Colombia, Honduras, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia will represent millions of farmers in the world’s coffee belt. DMCC Coffee Centre will be in charge of promoting the ‘Farmers Pavilion’ on all marketing channels through the Centre’s database. In addition, it will also host an informational campaign for visitors and exhibitors as well as invite experts and dignitaries to participate in this event.

Saeed Al Suwaidi, director of Agri Commodities at DMCC, said, “We are confident that all of our key stakeholders across the coffee value chain will benefit from our strategic partnership with the World of Coffee. The Farmers Pavilion will further consolidate Dubai’s position as a major international hub for coffee trading and will serve as a platform to connect all relevant players in the coffee community, from farmers to traders and consumers, in line with our vision and objective to grow the local and global coffee business from Dubai. In particular, the pavilion will facilitate the exchange of skills and knowledge among individuals in the roasting field, help drive new business prospects, and improve the experience of both visitors and farmers by providing them with opportunities to sample and choose from the best kinds of green coffee beans. We believe that coffee is a universal language that connects people from around the world, and we look forward to enhancing global coffee trade by supporting the farmers’ pavilion.”

The World of Coffee features a variety of events and activities. This includes the ‘UAE National Barista Championship’, the ‘National Latte Art Championship’, and the ‘Coffee Design Awards’ and ‘Best New Product competitions’, in addition to the main pavilions such as the Roasters Village and the Cabining Room and Brew Bar. The event will further entail a set of lectures and workshops. This will feature the presence of a group of associations specialised in the coffee industry, including the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association, the Saudi Coffee Company, the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority.

The presence of these associations holds significance owing to their role in enhancing quality and standards in coffee production, increasing trade and consumption of coffee, as well as representing and supporting the interests and rights of farmers, roasters, manufacturers, distributors, and consumers. Additionally, it would also foster cooperation and exchange of experiences between countries and regions producing and consuming coffee, as well as enhance awareness of its culture, history, benefits, types, and methods in preparing coffee. It will further promote innovation, development, and adoption of advanced technologies within the ever-evolving coffee industry.

Over 1,650 global, regional, and local companies and brands will be participating in this exhibition to display their range of products and services related to the coffee industry, such as green and roasted coffee beans. Participating businesses will include those who provide roasting, packaging, and processing services in addition to those that supply coffee-manufacturing equipment, water, milk, and flavourings. These participants include 60 companies and brands from the UAE, like Three Coffee, Q Coffee, and Coffee Planet. Further, a total of 17 firms participating in the event, including Colombini Srl, Mazzer Luigi Spa, and Lelit Italy, are Italian brands and enterprises that will also be participating in the exhibition. Additionally, around nine firms and brands from the United States and eight companies from China will be participating in the exhibition.

The World of Coffee 2024 exhibition invites visitors to Zabeel Halls 4, 5, and 6 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, from 21 to 23 January 2024. Those who wish to participate and visit the exhibition can register via the following link: dubai.worldofcoffee.org/visitor-registration.
